Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Week ending 30th July 2023

Here is this week's news, information and catch reports from Luton Angling Club.

Certificate of Excellence award.
On Thursday at our monthly committee meeting the club was presented with a certificate of excellence award by the Angling Trust. The award is for the efforts of the club coaching team on the training days for Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Police. These were organised by the Angling Trust and focused on angling law and its enforcement. The award was handed over to Mark Brooks and Dennis Hunt by Paul Thomas who is the regional enforcement support manager for the Eastern region. We hope to get Paul back soon to talk to our bailiffs about how to safely and effectively deal with some of the issues currently faced by angling clubs such as illegal fishing.

Ben Waymont did a 48hr session for the first time and he had 2 carp, 24lb and 18lb and a few Bream up to 10lb.

Bill Ridgway had a short session on Beckerings and he had 9 good sized Roach, plus another that was taken by a Pike. Best of all his first attempt at fishing for the carp gave him this perfect 15lb Mirror.

Jason Mash had a couple of Commons.

Lavendon Mill Upstream
Nobby Clarke fished Lavendon upstream again on Wednesday with his mate Geoff , Nobby fished peg one and Geoff was in peg two, both had about the same amount of fish , no quality fish this time but he only had one good sized roach last time of about 10oz, This session's best wasn’t anywhere close to that , again he chose to fish the whip using seed baits, most roach he caught were on wheat at different depths. It was tough going and he fished from first light until about half two.

He thinks that it may take a few weeks and possibly into September before the better roach show up but regardless he still had an enjoyable session in lovely surroundings and good company. We also think as the stretch gets fished more the fish will get used to the bait going in and catch rates will improve.

Paul Martin also fished the Upstream section this week and he caught a Bream, a Perch and 2 Pike but they were not photgraphed.

Wednesday Match Report 26th July Three Locks section 3 & 4 This week nineteen of our members gathered for the largest Club match held for some years. Starting with friendly chat and the draw in the car park at Three Locks, it was a warm but muggy morning, It was the sort of weather the old Luton anglers called breaming weather, and so it proved, some great weights being recorded. The group had chosen to change the venue away from the location scheduled in Leighton Buzzard town centre this week, due to the Canal festival taking place this weekend around Tiddenfoot and they opted for Three Locks as an alternative. Due to expected numbers of extra boats moored for the Canal festival they opted to split the match into two sections, one section below on 3 (A) and one above the locks on 4 (B). As the anglers made their way along the towpath to their pegs the sun appeared, and after the recent rain the Canal was warm and holding a light coffee colour. All were looking forward to a nice day on the bank. During the day they had a number of historic narrowboats pass through heading for the Canal festival. Richard Darbon was the winner this week with 32lb 8oz and he was pegged on Section A, he had a red-letter day. Richard managed 15 decent bream and skimmers, plus a couple of Perch. Richard started on a 5m punch and pinkie line, then went over to the far bank after 45min using a small feeder on a tip rod. He kept loose feeding 5 or 6 casters at a time and caught steadily all day using a small feeder, with a 16 hook baited with single caster. Tim Watts also had a brilliant day, with 2nd in A section with 20lb 12oz. It was Tim’s first outing with the group for some time and he certainly hasn’t lost his touch! He used both a pole and a little waggler rod for the 20lb 12oz of skimmers using dead red and dead pinkie as bait. Adrian Smith, always a class angler was pegged on section B. Adrian started on the inside line with pinkie over groundbait and caught about 2lb of fish before moving to the far side where he alternated two lines, one fishing over groundbait with worm and then red maggot and the other over a chopped worm and caster line to take bream and three good sized perch. Dennis Hunt and Colin Macbeth had a close contest on section A weighing 12lb 6oz and 12lb 2oz respectively with Simon Faulkes and Ash Bunnage going head to head on B with 11lb oz and 10lb 12oz respectively. Total weight caught this week was just over 160lb, giving an average of over 8lb per man. Just as the match finished this week the rain started, and after putting their gear in their cars many of the group retired to have a pint in the Three Locks before returning home, after a great day on the bank. Dave Murdoch fished overnight on Thursday his first carp session for about 10 years. Early on in the session, he lost a monster mirror at the net, which was a massive disappointment. During the night, he had several Bream to 8lb. At the end of the session, a nice roach took his 15mm boilie as he was packing up.

Members have been making use of the new car park this week. Nobby Clarke fished during the week and he said it was lovely to get to fish the venue and wow what a difference the car park makes!. He thanks all involved in making the car park happen.

He fished hemp and wheat using a whip in 12/13 ft of water , he put a bait dropper down with hemp and wheat,  and used wheat on the hook , it wasn’t long and he started getting a few roach and had a very enjoyable few hours , he's planning to be back this coming Wednesday with his mate Geoff so we’re looking forward to the next report.

Bailiff Roger also fished upstream again making use of the new car park he helped build. He had numerous Roach, Skimmers and small Chub, but the catch of the day has to be a Perch that took half a Lobworm. It weighed 2lb 15oz and put up one heck of a fight. He said its good to see plenty of Skimmers and small Chub as he's rarely caught them over the past few years so its looking good for the future.

Neville Hunt fished on Sunday and caught Roach, small chub and perch in Peg 1.

David Murdoch also fished it on Sunday afternoon and it was hard going due to the wind and the bites were few and far between but he did manage a few small chub on Lobworm which were in pristine condition.

Wednesday Match Report 19th July
River Nene Barnwell Plantation
This week, we travelled away to fish the River Nene at Barnwell plantation as guests of Wellingborough Nene Angling Club. The river here is very similar to the Ouse but slightly shallower, very pretty, and holds a good head of fish.
Eight of us made the journey and met in the car park on what was initially a very overcast morning with a temperature of 20C, with the sky threatening rain, which apart from a couple of small showers failed to materialise. The river had a tinge of colour, and a lovely steady flow from left to right with the water temperature at 18.5 C, and fish were topping as we arrived. After we started the weather brightened and we had a very gentle downstream breeze however, in the middle of the match what had been a gentle breeze picked up considerably, generating significant ripple (waves) making float presentation very challenging. The wind dropped away as we neared the end with a return to the benign conditions we experienced at the start, but by then, the damage had been done, and our weights were suppressed!
The match was a very tight affair with two and a half ounces covering the first four anglers this week.
Richard Gibbs our winner with 3Lb 10oz started off on short pole at 4/5 metres feeding small amounts of sloppy groundbait and maggot, with maggot on hook, while loose feeding a waggler line down the middle with hemp, tares, and maggot. He had 20 roach, rudd, and perch in the first hour and then switched to waggler line for bleak, roach and small Chub. When the strong downstream wind appeared, he didn't have a bite for over two hours. He then switched to 1.5grm pole rig at 10 metres, alternating between waggler and pole to take occasional roach and chub until end of the match. He only had one fish on tare, everything came to single or double maggot. The problem for Richard and the rest of us that we probably only hit one bite in three!
Joint second with a tied 3lb 8oz were Richard Darbon and Terry Vickers. Terry fished a waggler in 9ft of water using red and bronze maggot about 2 rod lengths out.
Dennis Hunt was third with 3lb 7oz 8 drm. Dennis started using maggot at around 7 Metres into 10ft of water and had a string of small perch, feeding a dozen grains of hemp every run-through. Switching to hemp on the hook contacted some roach, but the bites died away with indications that fish were taking on the drop made him change to a very light hemp rig fishing at around mid-depth. Although tare was tried this failed to produce the expected bites, so he returned to hemp on the hook. This produced a steady flow of roach (and missed bites) until the wind got up and fishing died, although he did manage a few more fish deep as the wind died away later.
Tony Hickmott has a good tussle with a pike of around 5 to 6lbs snaffled a fish on the way in, finally breaking him as he attempted to net it.

CRT Regional Celebration Match Three Locks Saturday 15th July.
Well, what a fantastic day on the bank! Today ( Saturday 15th July)  was the day of our Regional CRT Celebration Match at Three Locks, for which many of our young anglers had spent a lot of time preparing.

After a dreadful weather forecast, which included thunder, heavy rain, and very high winds which we believe put some competitors off attending, (we had 20 anglers booked and only 13 came) we only had about 30 minutes of heavier rain early on, and the really strong winds failed to materialise. The Canal at Three Locks is quite sheltered, and for the most part the wind didn’t trouble the young competitors. Those who didn’t turn up missed a fantastic day.

We had 6 young cadets, 6 Juniors and a Youth fishing, all with differing levels of experience. For some,it was their first match, and others had competed before,we are pleased to say everyone caught.

Winner of the Cadets was Luton’s Leo Levesque with 4lb 9oz, closely followed by another Luton Cadet Dylan Carr, who was defending his title from last year, and weighed 3lb 7oz. Third was Faris Edwards with 1lb 6oz.

The Junior honours went to Maja Davidson of Tring Anglers with 5lb 8oz, with Luton’s Kaden Dixon second with 4lb 3oz. Third was Alfie Hawkes of Luton with 3lb 2oz. Special mention must be made of Luton’s Daniel Carr, who while finishing last in the Junior section hooked and lost two big fish during the match, one on his pole and the other on his tip rod, better luck next time Daniel!

We had John Ellis of CRT doing Facebook Live broadcasts which can be viewed on the CRT Angling Facebook page and Ian Orbell who organised last weeks benefit match, presented the Junior trophies.

Well done to all those who took part, especially those who framed, and thanks to everyone who supported us in running the event today.

Wednesday Match Report 12th March River Ouse Eaton Ford
10 anglers turned out at Eaton Ford on Wednesday to fish the first river match since the opening of the river season, and they found the venue to be in superb order, it was a fine day with the river looking in good condition if a little clear, but with reasonable flow. Bait thrown into the water could be seen sinking for about 4 feet before it disappeared. The water temperature was 20 degrees.

We had a very blustery downstream wind promising to be a problem, which increased in strength throughout the match making proper presentation difficult. Many anglers struggled to detect bites in the wind and many maggot skins were retrieved without anglers being aware of the cause!! Not surprisingly, most of us found quality fish hard to come by and many low weights were recorded.

Barry Roper managed to find some chub to record the winning weight, followed by Andy Frankum in second place and Steve Lathwell third. However, the weights were very disappointing this week due to the challenging conditions.

Lavendon Upstream Car Park
The club is pleased to announce the opening of our new car park for the Lavendon upstream section of River Ouse, A fantastic stretch of River that has in the past produced some excellent specimen fish but has been overlooked by many anglers due to lack of secure poor access and lack of parking. Our new car park is off road, fenced and behind locked gates no more struggling through the kissing gate with your tackle as a new 5ft pedestrian gate provides access from the car park to the field and then a short walk down to the River. Our thanks go to the landowner for kindly allowing us to use the land and the volunteers that helped us construct it.

We would really like to see some more catch reports and pictures from our River sections so please give them a try and send in your catch reports!
