Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Week Ending 27th June 2021

Here is this weeks news and catch report round up from Luton Angling Club.

Beckerings Reservoir
Neil Cox had just the one from Beckerings at the weekend a Mirror at 23lb 13oz the fish looked like a proper old warrior. He chose the wrong side of the reservoir as he saw one lad have 13 fish in his usual favourite swim on the other side.

Lavendon Mill - River Ouse
Bailiff Bob Burdiak had a great session on the upstream section of the River Ouse at Lavendon this week. The river was in great condition with a steady flow and a hint of colour. Float fishing using wheat as bait he had a nice bag of Roach. All the bigger ones were on a small feeder with banded pellet. He should have caught many more but missed a lot of the bites. A Pike took the last Roach as it surfaced but he did manage to land the Pike and its weight was estimated at around 8lb.

Biddenham - River Ouse
Dave Murdoch spent a couple of hours Tuesday evening on the River at Biddenham. He fished one of the platforms that has recently been rebuilt by the bailiffs. He caught lots of small Perch using worm as bait which provided good sport but unfortunately none of the venues monster sized Perch showed up. He also caught a Jack Pike which grabbed his bait as he was reeling in.
Wyboston - River Ouse
Rob Dunthorne fished the river He was fishing for Chub using a light link leger using whole lobworm and caught some nice Roach and Perch.
North House Lake
Adrian Jaworski had a quick 2 hour session after work and caught a 19lb 4oz Common off the top.

On Saturday a work party took place and there was a fantastic turn out with quite a few attending to help out meaning that a huge amount of work took place including removing all the old otter fencing and tidying up of swims. Several snags were also removed from the water. A big thank you to all those that came along to help.

Wednesday Match Group Report - 23/6/21
Nine anglers met in the car park at Slapton on Wednesday and again we were pleased to welcome some new faces joining us for the first time on a lovely summer morning.
This week we all fished with high hopes numbers of the Bream known to inhabit Slapton would show, but instead many of us contacted quality roach and some decent Hybrids. The Canal at Slapton is now dotted with fry, visible in the clear water, which is a good indication the fish have spawned, so there are hopes the fishing will continue to improve.
Many started brightly catching on the 4 Metre line from the off mainly on Pinkie, we had a big wide beam go by after an hour and a half and several swims seemed to die at this point. Steve Lathwell continued catching on Pinkies, steadily building a decent weight through the day.
Myles Tommey caught patchily until the last hour when he found Roach taking large maggot just in front of the reeds and he caught steadily building his weight.
Colin Holmes had a decent Bream and a Hybrid and lost another bream during the day.
Others struggled, but it was pleasing to see Roger Baker one of our oldest regulars climbing the frame today and finishing 4th above Barry Roper, Dennis Hunt and Dudley Frankland this week.
Proof that the Coach training he did at Three locks a couple of weeks ago has borne fruit, well done Roger.

Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Covering w/c 7/6/21 and 13/6/21

Here is all the latest news, information and catch reports from Luton Angling Club. Wednesday this week was the start of the River fishing season and we are able to fish the rivers again. Just prior to the start of the season our hardworking bailiffs and volunteers were out ensuring our river venues were in tip top condition and they look forward to seeing existing and new members on the banks. If you do try any of the River stretches please send in any catch reports and pictures.

Wyboston South Lagoon
At Wyboston Wojciech Weremij caught a lovely 26lb 8oz common carp from the South Lagoon

North House Lake
His first 48hr session on North House and member Terry caught his first fish of the session at 7:45 on the 15th June weighing 18lb on the nose and then the next morning as he was still asleep Terry was in again, the alarm woke him up at 5:35 with a lovely mirror weighing 22lb 8oz They were all caught on wicked white popup with only a few scattered nutz (mad baits)

Beckerings Reservoir
On his first night session and on his birthday Robert Sweet had this chunky Common and also a beautifully scaled Mirror.

Gareth Evans spent his first night of the year on Beckerings and caught a 19lb 5oz Mirror at 5am in the morning.

Members should note that a lock has been fitted to the toilet door at Beckerings to prevent unauthorised use of the facility. The lock can be opened using your club gate key - Please ensure the door is kept locked when the facility is not in use.

Wednesday Match Report - 9/6/2021
10 anglers fished the Wednesday match at Beckerings on 9th June and again we had some new faces who came to join us. We met in the car park on what was to be a hot and cloudless day with little wind, so sun cream was a definite requirement this week!
The lake is full, and currently extremely clear, and we were met with a calm surface with little ripple and very dense bed of weed, which has appeared in the last couple of weeks on the edge of first shelf in about 10ft of water. This makes fishing some platforms extremely difficult.
Some anglers opted to try the feeder over the weed, but others sensing the bream may be reluctant to feed in the calm hot conditions decided on float tactics from the off, fishing towards the weed off the platforms.
Darren Savage started on Sweetcorn, taking some nice roach, and then his bites dried, and he switched to Maggot, taking small perch to weigh in 7lb 3oz. Dennis Hunt started on Maggot having seen perch in the clear water, taking about 5lb on the drop in an hour and a half before the Perch disappeared. He then had a couple of roach and two skimmers before the fishing slowed to the occasional perch in the last couple of hours to end on 8lb 6oz. Colin Holmes also opted for fishing the float on the inside of the weed, again catching Perch to weigh 4lb 12oz.
Special mention must be made of our oldest regular attender Roger this week, who despite having an accident at home resulting in a dozen or more stitches in his left elbow still came to fish with us. We all helped Roger to his peg and he was able to continue to enjoy to his fishing. Roger so enjoys the general company and Banter on a Wednesday he says he wouldn’t miss it for the world, its not all about catching fish, it’s about enjoying a day on the bank among friends.
Results.
Dennis Hunt 8lb 6oz
Darren Savage 7lb 3oz
Colin Holmes 4lb 12oz
Kevin Chadfield 2lb 10oz
Malcolm Ogden 1lb 5oz
Roger Baker 1lb 13oz

Wednesday Match Report 16th June 2021 at Eaton Ford
Nine anglers from the Wednesday Group met at Eaton Ford this week as it was that magical day when the Close season ends and we were able to fish the river again. For many of us because of Lockdowns it was the first time in six months we had been able to fish one.
As the anglers arrived before the draw, they wandered down to view the new backwater enlargements and the river, which looked in good condition with some colour and flow.
All commented on the great amount of hard work that’s been put in at Eaton Ford by our resident Bailiff team, Stuart and Glenn, cutting grass, clearing new and existing swims, the venue looked brilliant, and having known it for over 30 years it’s never ever looked better.
We were looking forward to fishing as we made our way to our pegs but knew the day would be a challenge because of the clear blue sky and soaring temperatures, on a day forecast to be the hottest of the year so far which it proved to be.
Richard Gibbs hooked a big fish presumed to be a bream on a feeder over on the far side early doors, which he unfortunately lost when it weeded him. He then struggled trying to present a Stick float in the wind, and then switched to the pole with more success.
Trevor ‘Bream love me, and I love Bream’ Bunnage our venue expert fished a feeder for about three hours without a bite, increased the size of the feeder and continued to use Worm heads to take two decent bream and bits to weigh 9lb 5oz, losing a bream estimated to have been about 8lb at the net.

I think it is fair to say the rest of the field struggled in the heat, with bait dying in the sunshine.
However, we will be back to Eaton Ford before too long, hopefully on a day when it is not quite so warm!
Results
1st Trevor Bunnage 9lb 5oz
2nd Richard Gibbs 1lb 14oz
3rd Darren Savage 1lb 12oz
There aren’t any pictures this week as it was so hot we forgot to take them!
This week we will be on the Canal at Slapton, meet in the Club car park for a 9am walk off draw, non-members welcome on payment of a day ticket, £5.00 optional pools
Canal Pairs Heat - 13/6/21
Sunday 13th June saw the heat of the CRT National Canal Pairs competition jointly hosted by Luton and The Tring Anglers which attracted an entry from 13 pairs, including some well-known names, and a few of our local Club anglers who wanted to have some fun and give it a go.
The Match HQ where competitors met for the draw and pre match breakfast and afterwards for results was the Anglers Retreat at Marsworth.
Luton pegged and ran Section A, our Section 13 at Ivinghoe, and Tring ran Section B on their Red Lion water. The conditions were far from ideal with a clear blue sky, hot sun and high temperatures making sunscreen an essential for all competitors.
While weights were not high the match was enjoyed by everyone who took part, and three pairs qualified for the Competition final.

Section A was won by the popular James Lewis of the Angling Trust, who has been a great help to us in the past, and weighed 1 Kilo 660. James was partnered by his dad who put in a good enough performance on Section B to see them through to the final in second place, so well-done James.
Some pre match footage was shown on Facebook Live

Canal and River Trust Coach Training Day
Luton Coaches along with others from Clubs across the South East were busy at the weekend at a socially distanced on the bank training session at Three Locks.
The session covered some of the finer points of Canal fishing given by Simon Mottram who had travelled from Shropshire specially to give the training before competing in a match in Northampton on Sunday’.
Luton had made our water at Three locks available for the day and two sessions were run with six attendees on each. The sessions were three hours long one in the morning and one in the afternoon and are part of the CRT commitment to ongoing development personal development of those coaches involved in ‘Lets Fish’ so the sessions can continue to deliver the best experience for those attending ‘Lets Fish’ events.
The Club had done most of the organisational work for CRT to enable the sessions to take place, including allocating places to the coaches who attended the sessions.
John Ellis the CRT National Fisheries manager and the driving force behind ‘Lets Fish’ attended to give a Facebook Live Presentation
All of the Coaches who attended went away having learnt a lot about the organisation and running of Lets Fish events and the demonstration by Mottie on how to maximise the lets fish potential of a swim was much appreciated, as well as tips on tackle that can be obtained in most shops.
Well done to Simon and everyone who attended a very enjoyable day. The sky was clear and the weather warm and we all enjoyed the sunshine. Simon dis Ok in his match at Northampton gaining a fifth place with 9lb 15oz so a good weekend all round.

WORK PARTY NOTIFICATION: 26th June 2021 - Venue Closure
Following the renewal of the Otter Fence at North House a work party has been planned for 26th of June. This is to cut up and remove the huge piles of old chainlink fencing and fence posts
The lake will be closed between 9am and 5pm so anyone booked on overnight Friday will need to vacate by 9am and anyone booked on Saturday night will not be able to arrive until 5pm. Anyone booked on who assists with the work will be able to set up earlier if the work is finished before 5pm. There is a small chance the works may also run into Sunday 27th as there is a lot to do.

That's it for this week.

Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Covering 24/5/21 - 6/6/21

Due to other commitments and lack of time there was no weekly report for the week ending 31st May 2021. This weeks report covers the week ending 31/5/21 and also this week ending 6/6/21.

The 2021 2022 Membership season started this week and did you know that by the end of this season Luton Angling Club will be 100 Years Old. The club would like to welcome all its new members and also thank all existing members for their renewals.

NORTH HOUSE LAKE
Carlo Borromeo managed a 9 fish haul using Mad Baits. New member Chris French fishing North House for the first time had a 17lb 5oz Common within 3 hours of setting up. Not a bad start to his Luton AC membership.
Kyle Thompson Parkinson caught a new PB common carp
Dean Brittain had a nice 23lb 9oz Mirror - he says he caught the same fish last year and it has putting on lots of weight and is getting up to a good size.

The old and dilapidated section of chainlink otter fencing at North House Lake has now been completely replaced. Members are reminded not to lean tackle against the otter fencing and report any damage or rabbit holes under it to the fisheries team. A work party will be planned soon to remove all of the old fencing materials from the site and we hope members will attend and help out as many hands make light work.

BECKERINGS RESERVOIR
Lee Cooke spent his birthday weekend up at Beckerings with his catches including 2 new pbs!! He had a 9lb 2oz Common then the Cat rod went off half hour later, after a 10 minute fight the right hand rod went off with another 18lb common a nice little double take!! The Catfish was 36lb 8oz then the second common a PB at 18lb 5oz he is still trying to reach the 20lb mark and we are sure that will happen soon.
The fish started spawning last weekend however just before they started a number of fish were caught.

Scott Judge had 3 fish during his 24hr session the biggest was a scale perfect Common, Bailiff Neil Cox put him on a good spot its always worth asking the venue bailiffs for some advice and tips as they know the waters well.

Bailiff Neil Cox had a great session as usual catching a number of stunning fish

Brett Collins sent in pictures of the fish he had during a 24hr session on Beckerings.
SOUTH LAGOON
Wojciech caught his first eel of this year at 2lb from the lagoon.

Wednesday Match report 26 May Grand Union Canal Ivinghoe Section 13.
After last weeks near record turnout we had five club members fish section 13 at Ivinghoe this week on a warmer but heavily overcast morning where the sun eventually shone and warmed our backs.
The Canal is still extremely clear but does seem to be warming at last and the fish are starting to respond, but the Roach for which this section is famous are still failing to show in any great numbers.
With the Canal so clear numbers of methods were tried, Dudley Frankland opting to fish a light tip rod baited with worm tipped with maggot from the off.
Dennis Hunt used Pinkie and fished a waggler over, Chris Howard tried waggler and pole, while Barry Roper and Roger Baker stuck with a pole through the match. Most had a slow first hour, but eventually we got a few fish feeding. The wind freshened and we had a few boats around midday which introduced some much needed colour into the water.
Dudley Frankland managed three decent Perch and a Bream with a Roach and smaller fish for 1st place weighing 7lb15oz. Dennis Hunt had two fighting fit Roach/ Bream Hybrids over the pound and a skimmer with a few small Perch for second place and Barry Roper had Skimmers and bits for 3rd . Roger Baker fishing his pole in anger for the first time unfortunately lost a nice Bream estimated to have been between 2 and 3lb at the net,
1st Dudley Frankland
7lb 15oz
2nd Dennis Hunt
3lb 14oz
3rd Barry Roper
3lb
4th Chris Howard
1lb

Wednesday Match Report 2nd June 2021 Cooks Wharf
With the recent rise in temperatures shorts were very much the order of the day for the anglers on the canal at Cooks Wharf this week. There were slightly fewer numbers than expected due to half term and other commitments diminishing the attendance.
The rise in temperature and an increase in the colour in the water with a bit more boat movement seems to have woken the fish up at last, with plenty of silvers (including the roach which seem to have been missing for weeks) showing at last.
We had a good match, some nice boaters even making us cups of tea, with plenty of fish caught, the two anglers before the swing bridge being hampered by the surface scum of floating Hawthorn blossom, which at times covered the surface, and those the other side sometimes struggling to hold a pole in the gusty wind.
For the second week in a row Dudley Frankland opted to fish a tip rod baited with worm to take Bream for 7lb 8oz. Barry Roper took a good net of silvers for 9lb 15oz on Pinkie, and Chris Howard weighed 4lb 8oz of silvers.
Dennis Hunt fishing Top 3 + 1 before the Swing bridge had a 6oz Skimmer first drop and continued taking fish steadily on pinkie feeding squatt over groundbait, although hampered by the surface scum at times to weigh 6lb 9oz. Roger Baker had a skimmer but lost a few fish at the net to weigh 8oz, so saved the blank.
1st Barry Roper
9lb 15oz
2nd Dudley Frankland
7lb 8oz
3rd Dennis Hunt
6lb 9oz
4th Chris Howard
4lb 8oz
5th Roger Baker
8oz
This week is a members only match at Beckerings Park Farm, meet for 9am draw £5.00 optional pools

Club Coaching and Let's Fish
On Sunday 23rd May three of our Club coaches ran a ‘Lets Fish’ event using South Lagoon, Wyboston. They were kept busy as 18 adults and young people attended and all caught, many catching a dozen or more fish.
The weather was mixed, but the heavy rain stayed away until after we had packed away. There was a lot of interest in our forthcoming ‘Follow on’ Kingfisher coaching sessions aimed at giving people the skill they need to fish on their own. These are open to any Club Kingfisher Junior member and to be run on Saturday afternoons on our Club venues.
Two of the stars on Sunday were Maryam and Daria, who loved the fishing experience and caught multiple times.
They loved being out by the lake and the resident pair of robins that were taking spilt maggots from the ground.

The Club Coaches have been out and about again this week delivering two Canal and River Trust ‘Lets Fish’ sessions and some help to a new Club member who had contacted us.
The Lets Fish events were delivered on our water at Three Locks on Tuesday, and the LAA water at Canal Fields Berkhamstead on Thursday.
Both were well attended sessions, with young people, including some ladies keen to try angling, and also grandparents who were also lapsed anglers wanting to return to fishing bringing along their grandchildren.
Plenty of fish were caught in a warming Canal. Harley who attended at Three locks lost an enormous Perch which had taken a single Pinkie, disappointed but not put off he picked up another set of tackle and calmly carried on fishing! He was so keen his parents booked the only remaining spaces for Berkhamstead, and he came again on Thursday and caught some more fish and has since become a Kingfisher member.
The coaching team also assisted Raymond a new senior member who had approached us for help as a new angler on Wednesday he spent some time with our coaches and we know he went out again on Thursday and caught some more fish on his own using some of the skills shown to him.
Any members who wish to attend our coaching and Junior matches should message the Club and we will arrange for you to be included in our coaching sessions.
