Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Week Ending 31st July 2022

Here is all this weeks catch reports, news and information from Luton Angling Club.

Youngster Dexter Allen won our monthly photo competition last month and he spent his £25 prize wisely on a new reel, A prologic element bf 4000. A bargain at £25 reduced from £75 (mid season sale). Eager to try it out he went to grove marina with dad Edward and had plenty of good roach, skimmers and a rare gudgeon. The fish were caught on corn and feeder, they also had endless bites on pinkie. Most of the fish caught were very small but he had great fun none the less. All pictures sent in of catches from Luton AC waters are automatically entered into the monthly competition.

North House Lake
Paul Parkinson did 24 hours on North House Lake and had a carp and a tench we are not sure of the weights as he didn’t weigh them. The carp was stockie number 8 which we stocked in October 2021 at a weight of 9lb 7oz. It definitely looks like its put on a pound or two.

Carlo had a nice overnighter on north house. He hadn't been down there for quite a while. He had a common of 19lb 6oz and a Mirror of 23lb possibly number 10 of the 2017 stockies.

Beckerings Reservoir
Water levels are very low due to the irrigation pumping though this hasn't as usual really affected the fishing. Members are reminded that they should minimise the amount of bait being used while the levels are low to prevent any water quality issues. Also bear in mind the banks can be quite slippery so extreme care must be taken.

Paul Sweet had 2 fish last weekend one common at 16lb and the other a mirror of 21lb.

Bill Ridgway set out on a mission to catch a tench on Tuesday, It was mission accomplished as he had one which just made 4lb. He also had some bream the best being the one pictured here along with 5 others 6 to 8 lbs

Bill R - Beckerings
It's nice to see the Tench making a bit of a comeback in Beckerings with 4 being caught on Wednesday by different anglers. The one here was caught by bailiff Mark Sessions (the one in the net 🤣). We also discovered several small Tench when we carried out some weed removal a while back.
On Sunday, Robbie Sweet had a nice common using a white foam zig.
Biddenham River Ouse
Nobby Clarke fished Biddenham today from 1.30 until 6.30pm , the roach were well up for it today. He fished an 8 mtr whip with a 7 mtr rig , started at close to full depth, but it was very slow so he started coming up until bites were had.
He ended up at about 1&1/2 mtr with giant hemp on the hook then onto tares and they went mad.
He dropped as many as he caught as they were just holding the seed. He changed hook size up to a 14 wide gape fine wire Tubbitini spade and started catching more.
Feeding was a constant 4 grains of small chinese hemp from hinders which is a superb feed hemp.
He also had skimmers and a few chublets. After reading the match report from Wednesday he was in two minds whether to give Biddenham a miss but pleased he didn’t. Here’s a few photos.

Mick Bell also had a few fish on Thursday including a couple of slim 10 inch Chub the rest of his catchg made up of Chublets and Bleak using sweetcorn at 5 metres. He used his old faithful 40 year old silstar whip and said it was a nice day on a lively bit of water.

Match Report, Wednesday 27th July Biddenham.
15 anglers met in the car park at Biddenham this week, and with the keepnet restrictions removed our Wednesday match could go ahead as normal.
It was a light overcast early, and after a cooler night the morning temperature was hovering at 18C. The temperature increased slightly during the day to 21C and the sun came out, and conditions became lighter, and then the wind picked up and the sky became a heavy overcast, which seemed to threaten heavy rain which didn’t appear.
The river had some colour and a very slow flow, but desperately needs some rain to freshen it up.
Most anglers struggled this week in these conditions, and weights were not high, with the venue roach extremely reluctant to show themselves, despite the ‘Favourite’ roach baits of Caster, Hemp and Tare being tried by many anglers.
Richard Gibbs decided that he would go for broke with the bleak, using his newly purchased Benwick Angling ‘Silverlight’ bleak floats and fished a 3.5m whip to take 90 fish in first hour, using maggot hookbait. After the first hour he looked for better stamp hemp and tare roach at 10m on the long pole, but no bites were forthcoming, so he switched back to the 3.5m whip but this line was also slow, so he went on 5m whip line and continued catching bleak and small chub, with a couple of slightly larger chub of 6/7 ounces.
During the 5 hours he fed around a pint and a half of maggots to take 278 fish in total for 5lb 15oz
Results
1st Richard Gibbs 5lb 15oz
2nd Steve Lathwell 3lb 3oz
3rd (Joint) Dave Britton & Dave Ridley 2lb 14oz
5th Ash Bunnage 2lb 7oz
6th Ray Burton 2lb 4oz

WYBOSTON SWIM IMPROVEMENT PROJECT
We met the tree contractors at 8-45am at South Lagoon on Monday morning for the start of the swim refurbishment project and had a fantastically productive day with loads achieved.
Our initial plan was to carry out the following work, removing or pollarding dangerous trees from around the lake:
The removal of 2 Dead willow trees in Peg 25
Pollard the leaning willow in Peg 17
Pollard the leaning willow in Peg 19
Pollard the leaning willow in Peg 15
All debris was to be removed, and the worksite left clean and tidy.
The guys worked solidly from the time they arrived until just after 4pm using a 3-tonne digger with specialist attachments and a very large chipper capable of rendering 200mm (8 inch) dia branches into wood chips. The wood chips produced have been stored for use surfacing tracks adjacent to the Lagoon.
In addition to the planned work, we also managed to remove the dead fallen willow from the lake, and remove the huge fallen tree by peg 7 in the river, allowing us to reinstate peg 6.
None of this work would have been possible without the skills and equipment the contractors brought, this work being on too large a scale for Club members and bailiffs to tackle.
Wyboston Tree Works
NORTH HOUSE WORK PARTY 13th & 14th August
We will be carrying out work to the otter fence on the weekend of 13th 14th August. Installing an additional buried metal skirt on the inside of the fence to prevent the rabbits digging out under the skirt from the inside and breaching the integrity of the fence.
The lake will be closed on both days.
Night Bookings on 12th, 13th & 14th August at North House
The 8 night booking places on Friday 12th and Saturday 13th are only available to those helping out at the work party during the day on both the Saturday and Sunday - As a one off and incentive those helping out can fish both Friday 12th and Saturday night 13th together (not usually permitted)
Book on in the usual way and mention you'll be helping out on the work party.
Anyone not helping at the work party who wishes to book on fish the Sunday night 14th should not arrive at the lake until 5pm unless helping with the work party (you can setup as soon as we finish work)
Although most of the work will be carried out using a digger please bring spades and shovels as we will need to dig around the posts manually.

That is about all for this week. If you would like to send us a catch report from a Luton AC Water you can send reports and pictures via our facebook page and other social media accounts, the club website or via what’s app message to 07940 229071. Don’t forget every picture we receive is automatically entered in to our monthly photo prize which is judged by the committee and you could win £25.00. It’s not always the biggest fish that wins so well worth sending in any of your catch reports.

Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Covering 11th - 24th July 2022

Here is the latest news and catch reports from Luton Angling Club. This report covers the last 2 weeks as I was short on time last weekend due to being away so was unable to get the report written.

Wyboston South Lagoon Swim Refurbishment Project
Works to improve the 25 swims around the South Lagoon begin this week (w/c 25th July) starting with some tree works. We expect the project to take a minimum of 2 weeks. The lake will remain open however swims will be closed off as and when necessary to facilitate the work. This work is made possible by an EA FIP grant with match funding by the club and represents a considerable investment in this water to improve the swims for our members and day ticket anglers.

There will obviously be some disturbance and disruption during the work. Members and Day Ticket Anglers must follow instructions on signage or from the on site bailiffs and contractors. We'll try and close off swims in advance but please be prepared to move if asked.
The end result will be much improved and safer access to the swims around the lagoon.
We will post progress updates or any changes to this information regularly throughout the project.

Keepnet Restrictions/Water Closures
A temporary keep net ban was put in to place this week due to the extreme temperatures. This is to protect fish and will be lifted once temperatures have fallen. Turnford have temporarily closed the Slipe Lane Pits as water levels are dangerously low on Railway Pit There is an algal bloom on Lea Pit and the fish in Boot Pit are very lethargic and stressed. We will update the facebook page once they re-open.

It's been in the mid to high twenties again today (Sunday). So we ask all members to carefully consider their actions while fishing in the hot weather particularly around quantities of bait being used and your actions if you catch a fish, keep it wet (unhook in the net in the water if possible)and do not spend too much time photographing etc and ensure a fish has recovered before release. We also recommend you do not fish for certain species such as Pike and Barbel during the hot weather as these are much more susceptible during hot weather.

If you see signs of numbers of fish dying or in distress 0800 80 70 60 is the number for the Environment Agency Incident Hotline.

Neil Cox had a change of tactics at Beckerings on the 15th and fished the tip. He had 8 bream up to 8lb 8oz and a lovely little tench all fish were caught on corn mixed with a madbaits attractor liquid he really enjoyed it and was a nice change from sitting behind alarms.

River Ouse Wyboston
Nobby Clark fished at Wyboston on the 20th and it wasn't easy going , There was a nice breeze which was the best bit of the day. It took him a couple of hours to get the fish feeding. He was with his mate Geoff who fished the tip and had skimmers a nice perch and a few small roach on maggot, worm and caster
Nobby fished a 4 metre whip with hemp to start with, and was catching 2 and 3oz roach then 2 to 3 hours in tried the trusty old tares and started catching the better roach.
Due to the keepnet restrictions he couldn’t take a photo of all the better fish of which he had at least a dozen.
It was definitely a good move to fish close in as lots of weed and rubbish was passing through and very slowly due to the lack of flow ,
An enjoyable few hours with good company and he cannot wait for the heavy rain they say we are going to get as he thinks the rivers really do need it.

River Ouse at Wyboston
On Friday 22nd he was back at Wyboston and arrived at about 3.30 In two minds to fish or just do a bit of watercraft. After a nose about he discovered he was the only one on the river. it was raining when he parked in the second lay-by up the lane past the North House Lake car park but he decided to have a go. There was a little bit more flow than when he visited two days before but not a major change. He got in a swim he had fished several times before and set up the whip with a 6 mtr rig with a 2grm float. The wind had got up in the time he spent setting up and pinging baits. The wind was from the North so against the flow which made presentation a bit more awkward, nevertheless he got over that as he always does and on the first put in he hooked a nice roach but disaster struck as he reached for the landing net - It shook its head and was gone and a 1.2lb hook length done, not a great start ..
He didn’t lose another though and ended up catching lots of small roach and about a dozen better quality roach. The pike were very active as per usual. In all he fished for about 3 hrs and then called it a day …

Luton AC Centenary Match 17th July 2022
The last match before the temporary keepnet ban came into play due to extreme hot weather took place on the 17th July.
With the weather being very hot, large weights were not expected by the eight anglers who fished the match.
Pegging was a pain due to extra boats mooring up since Friday, but we managed to get everybody some needed shade.
First on the day was Phil Speakman with 8lb 9oz. A mixed net of Roach, Perch, and Skimmers.
Second, and so close was Steve Lathwell with 8lb 6oz.
Third, and just out of the money was Lawrence Breach with 7lb 6oz
The other section winner was Myles Tommey with 3lb 14oz
£50.00 was raised for the Luton AC coaching team which will be used for bait and equipment and supporting the coaches to bring new anglers into the sport.

Match Report, Wednesday 20th July The Globe
After the high temperatures of recent days, the Wednesday group met knowing that due to the current keepnet restrictions put in place by the club they couldn’t hold the match as normal, so the 11 anglers fishing decided to forgo the usual format and have a different day by limiting themselves to Float only, short whips or running line and just pleasure fish, counting the number of fish caught for a bit of fun.
They also chose to modify the hours fished because of the forecast rain with the possibility of thunderstorms so they finished at 2-30pm allowing time to get packed away and back to the pub for a drink before the rain arrived!
All the anglers enjoyed the day in cooler (but still warm) temperatures with numbers of good fish being taken along the length. Steve Lathwell triumphed taking the most fish at over 60, run close by Richard Gibbs at 58. Richard however had a much larger weight estimated to exceed 20lb including some nice bream and hybrids while Steve’s bag was made up of smaller fish and estimated at 7-8 lb. both anglers preferred bait being Pinkies.
After fishing the group retired to the Globe for a drink, a debrief and some general banter, a great end to the day. Many thanks to the Globe for allowing the group to use their car park this week, its much appreciated, they do always ask before they park as they don’t want to abuse the hospitality.
Next Wednesday assuming the current keepnet ban will be lifted to allow the usual match to take place the group will fish Biddenham, so it will be members only, Draw at 8.30 fish, 10.30 till 3.30 with £1.00 Luton peg fee and £5.00 optional pools,
The Wednesday Match Group at the Globe

That is all we have this week. Keep sending in your catch reports via our social media pages or via the club website or what's app to 07940 229071 and you could win £25.00 as the best picture we receive each month (judged by the committee) wins a £25.00 prize.
