Match Report 22nd November 2023 Grand Union Canal Town South
This week the Wednesday match was to be held at Eaton Ford, but the recent rain had led to slippery banks and a very swollen river, so this week we fished an alternate venue on the Canal instead.

Wednesday was a cold late autumn morning, and the dawn broke as we met for our draw with a spectacular sunrise, which started with deep red hues and ended up a lovely orange, before fading to give a fine but cooler day. The starting air temperature was around 5C as we made our way to our pegs.
The temperature climbed slowly to a high of around 10C at midday, before starting to fall again as the afternoon drew on.
The Canal had good colour, but was very full, with a midday temperature of 9C, and due to the rain had a slight flow due to the amount of water discharging from the canal via the overflows.
We had a couple of boats during our match, but both passed us with little disturbance.
Today wasn’t easy for anyone, and weights were quite low for this venue, which usually produces bigger bream. Tim Watts our winner, was delighted when he drew what he thought would be a bream peg. He attacked it for them from the off but it never happened, and unbeknown to him, no Bream were to be caught by anyone else during the match. Tim was getting small roach, but as these don’t usually produce winning weights if the bream show, he initially tried bigger baits to avoid them. This turned out to be a tactical error today, so he eventually went for the roach and got run of better fish with 20 mins to go. Tim ended with 90 Roach for 6lb and took his fish using punch and pinkie as hookbait.
Dudley Frankland fished the bottom of the far shelf feeding chop worm and caster. Dudley took a few bigger Perch using worm hook bait to end with 5lb 8oz.
Dennis Hunt started feeding liquidised bread and toasted crumb at the bottom of the inside shelf at 4 metres and fed a far swim at 11 metres with groundbait and pinkie. Starting on the inside he took roach steadily all day, the far swim failing to produce, ending with 86 roach for 4lb 7oz.

Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Week ending 19th November 2023

Here is all of the news, information and catch reports from Luton Angling Club for the week ending Sunday 19th November 2023.

Another slow week for reports this week please send in all your catch reports as we really do need them at this time of year!

Lavendon Mill - River Ouse
Bob Burdiak and Mark Brooks enjoyed a day on the River at Lavendon upstream on Friday. The river had a good flow and good colour.
Bob fished feeder and caster or maggot taking roach from the off. Mark was on the pole but took a while to start catching, but the fish responded eventually. Typically, as Bob walked to Mark's swim to take a photo Mark swung in the smallest roach of the day.
Bob's catch included a Perch of a pound and a half and a Chub of one pound plus.

Reservoir regular Jason Mash was at Beckerings on Friday and his catch wasn't what he was expecting and certainly wasn't the intended species. He was float fishing with 5lb main line and 2lb bottom to a size 18 hook with two red maggots on and had this nice common, It took some good angling skills (and a good amount of time) to land it on such light tackle.

A few of the work party team were at Beckerings on Saturday replacing a damaged concrete threshold under one of the otter fence farm access gates, This was essential in order to keep our fish stocks safe from predators. Thanks to Mark Brooks, Dave Murdoch, Neville Hunt and Roger Bland for doing this in some quite wet and muddy conditions.

Match Report 15th November 2023 Moat Lake, Wold Farm - Report by Dennis Hunt
This week the Wednesday match was to be held on the River Ouse at Lavendon Mill, but the recent heavy rain, rise in river levels and saturated ground made this venue unsuitable so an alternate was sought. We decided to hold our match at Wold farm Podington which is situated on the old World War 2 airfield, a co-incidence in the week following remembrance Sunday, We have altered our fishing times to 9:30 am to 2:30 pm because of the clock changes which make it darker in the evenings.
As we met at the venue the sky was clear, and the air temperature was hovering at 6C, and the water at 7C and was holding good colour. The venue looked lovely with the dappled sunlight filtering through the leaves, giving great autumn colour. A stiff breeze a got up around midday, and then died again in the early afternoon. Those in in the sunny swims were luckier than the ones where the sun didn’t shine as these stayed quite cold through the day. The fishing wasn’t easy, with many experiencing a dead spell in the middle of the day and having bites that didn’t sink the floats merely moving them almost imperceptibly sideways.
Taking the honours again was Sean Leatherland, who bagged 17 Carp and 2 Chub. Sean fished his pole with his float rig baited with corn just off the far bank rushes, feeding very small balls of groundbait laced with 2mm Pellet to weigh in 37lb 9oz.
Second place was taken by Steve Lathwell, who fished just off the island in around 3ft of water using red maggot as bait. Steve was using a 0.2 Gram carbon float with spread shotting to give a slow fall so he could search through the water to bag 25lb 10oz
Third was Andy Frankum who fished down the shelf near the island. Andy fed caster and groundbait using double red maggot on the hook to end with 20lb 11oz.
It was disappointing not to be able to fish our first choice of venue this week, but all who fished Wold Farm, a venue I’m sure we will return to in future and enjoyed the day. For once we didn’t even get rained on! We had some who had intended to join us this week having to cancel because of family bereavement, we send them our sincere condolences, and hope you are able to join us again soon.
Our grateful thanks to all those who assisted in running the match this week, especially Sean’s wife Tracy for help with the weigh in.

Our next Match on Wednesday 23rd November was due to be at Eaton Ford, but weather and river conditions necessitate a change from the advertised venue so it will now be held on the canal at Town South, Leighton Buzzard. Beckerings Reservoir
Darren Savage fished Beckerings for the Roach this week and while using only 3lb line and a size 16 hook this 26lb 11oz Common decided to take the bait. Amazingly Darren was able to carefully play and land the fish which must have been a real challenge on such light gear. He also had a Roach and numerous small perch during the session.

A few years ago we stocked Ide into Beckerings reservoir all at around 6-8" in size these Ide have grown very well and are now around the 2-3lb mark. To complete the last phase of our 2023 stocking program we added a further 300 6-8" Ide from the same supplier (Epperstone Park Hatcheries) These fish are fast growing and feed well all year round so provide good fun for our members.

On Saturday the wpork party crew assembled at North House Lake and carried out general venue maintenance. We cleared a number of snags from the water, thinned the reeds on some of the swims, cleared undergrowth around the otter fence and trimmed overhanging branches that encroached swims. A huge thanks to the volunteers who assisted.

I apologise if I miss anyone here... Brian and Kieran Turner, Neville Hunt, Dennis Vivian, Fergal O'Kane, Bob Burdiak, Mark Brooks, David Murdoch, Josh Townsend, Barry Stevenson, Daniel Hussey,David Nicholson, Des Saunders and not forgetting Andy Smith who did a fantastic job feeding and watering the volunteers. Match Report 8th November 2023 Yasis, How End
As we gathered at How End for this week’s match on Wednesday morning, it was dark and wet following a cold night. Fortunately, as we were unloading our cars and doing our draw, the rain eased, and then stopped, and the breeze dropped, although it wasn’t terribly warm.
These conditions persisted until Midday, when the sky became darker, the wind got up and a heavy rain squall appeared. This lasted about 30 minutes, and then abated but the cold wind persisted, dropping away about an hour later.
The lake had good colour, and anglers could see the occasional fish topping as we set up, and all of us were looking forward to a good day.
Jim Tookey had a red-letter day, Jim fished two lines one at 9 Mtrs and another margin line feeding 4mm Pellets with 6mm pellets on the hook to end with a catch of mostly Carp for 104lb 9oz.
Sean Leatherland took second place, fishing single red maggot over small nuggets of groundbait midway across weighing 64lb 10oz.
Third place this week was taken by Myles Tommey. Myles started off fishing maggot over small balls of groundbait, but was only catching Ide, with odd small Barbel, so he switched tactics feeding micro pellet and banded pellet hookbait and started to catch the Carp ending with 59lbs.
All of us enjoyed the day despite the inclement weather, and as usual we record our very many thanks to Phil, Tanya and Pip at How End and to those who helped run the day, especially Tracy and Ray for doing the weigh in for us.

Here is all of the news, information and catch reports from Luton Angling Club for the week ending Sunday 5th November 2023.

The terrible weather this week with the arrival of Storm Ciaran kept many people off the banks and there have been noticeably fewer reports. River levels and flows remain high with further rain forecast this week. We have had a few hardy members who decided to brave the conditions and have been rewarded with some good catches.

Match Report 1st November 2023 Three Locks Upper & Lower
Following the clock change at the weekend we had been expecting a lighter morning this week, but due to early overcast with wind and rain, this didn’t happen. With the numbers expected, we had decided to put a Section (A) below Three Locks and another Section (B) above the flight with 10 pegs in each.

Following the recent rain, the canal was highly coloured, with a midday water temperature of 11C. The weather forecast for the day wasn’t great, and we did have four seasons in one day, but it wasn’t generally as bad as we had perhaps initially expected.
The fishing however turned out to be difficult and somewhat patchy, some anglers struggling to catch, and recording DNW, which may have been due to the approach of storm Ciaran and the associated drop in air pressure.
The overall winner Tim Watts, who was pegged on section A and got a peg on the boats. At first, he wasn’t overly pleased with it, however it fished well. Tim reported no small fish at all, just a good stamp, and so had to wait and work for bites. He rotated and fed 3 separate areas down the far shelf, further over, tight to the boat and inside lines. He reported feeding quite heavily, going for it, which was a risky strategy, and he ended not getting a bite in the last hour. He ended up with 12lb 14oz for the win, made up with Skimmers a big Roach and a big Perch.
Our Winner on B section was Andy Frankum, who had a bit of a mare of a day losing 3 big bream, what he thought were a couple of big perch, and a couple of rigs to snags. He tried all sorts, changing rigs and hooks, but try as he might, they still fell off! Andy finished a frustrating day with 4lb 4oz.
Second on A was Colin MacBeth with 5lb 5oz, with Tony Hickmott third, and on B Sean Leatherland took second place by fishing short at 3Mtrs for the first half hour and then going to 11Mtrs where he fished worm and red maggot to take mostly small fish and a bonus perch and skimmer, ending with 3lb 15oz, beating Richard Darbon who fished short using pinkie over groundbait by 1oz!
Despite the relatively low weights this week, we all enjoyed the day, and we didn’t get too wet, although it was getting rather dark as we left the bank, a taste of things to come.
Thanks to all those who helped with the pegging, weighing, and admin again this week, without the team effort, we couldn’t run our weekly day out.
