Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Weeks Ending 18th and 25th July 2021

North House Lake
Brad William Evan-Hart had 8 Carp from North House during his session. The biggest a mid 20 and the smallest was 12lb all caught on DNA baits S7 and Bug boilie fished snowman style.
South Lagoon - Wyboston
Amer Jawad met up with Steve from Match Fishing magazine on 20th July to do a feature on the South Lagoon at Wyboston. The conditions didn't lend themselves for a bream feature as it was flat calm and temperatures were touching 30! But as with many of our waters, it didn't disappoint as he managed 12 bream touching 6lb.
Wojciech Weremij caught 30lb of bream and silvers just feeder fishing on the lagoon
Beckerings
Ian Inness sent in a picture of a recent catch of a Common Carp from Beckerings.

Matthew Scott had a nice Common carp taken off the top at Beckerings
Craig Mahoney had a stunning Mirror from Beckerings the weight was 15lb. On another session he had a 25lb 7oz Mirror along with 11 Bream.
Biddenham River Ouse
Joe King-Johnson caught a 5lb Eel at Biddenham. I think this is the first Eel I've seen caught at Biddenham.

River Ouse Wyboston
Matthew Scott had a PB pike of 18lb caught while fishing on the River at Wyboston

Coaching Update
Just under a year ago, Harvey and his friend Sam came to a CRT ‘Lets Fish’ and said they would like to learn to fish.
They both came from families with no fishing history, and nobody could show them what to do. They had some tackle, and had tried a few times, but had unfortunately failed.
They were keen to learn to fish as the skill for their Duke of Edinburgh award.
We managed to find them a few fish at the Lets Fish session, and they were hooked, and enjoyed it so much they booked on again for another session two weeks later.
This time they did a little better and wanting to continue had some more ‘One to One’ ‘Improver’ sessions with Club Coaches where they learnt a lot more.
They have persevered through the winter, joined the Club, and now have a lot more suitable tackle.
On a coaching session last Sunday morning (which unfortunately Sam couldn’t attend as he is currently having to isolate) Harvey managed a net of 5lbs 3oz of Canal silvers with minimal Coaching input, a fine effort - Well done Harvey!
Harvey and Sam will be attending further Club ‘Improver sessions on Saturday afternoons and are both entered in the CRT Junior match to be held at Ivinghoe on 24th July.
They have also signed up to compete in The Junior Festival of Canal fishing to be held on the Shropshire Union in September.
Do you perhaps know anyone young or old who wants to learn or improve their fishing skills?
If so, message us and we'll put you in touch with the Club coaches and they'll do their best to help.

CRT Junior Championship - Regional Heat
Luton hosted the regional heat of the CRT Junior Championship at Ivinghoe on Saturday 24th July. Sam and Harvey both took part in this event. Unfortunately, the entry was very much depleted due to several participants having to go into Covid self-isolation at the last minute, which was a great shame, and spoiled the fun for some. Even so it was the first Junior match run on Luton water for some years, and hopefully something we can run again.

The weather on the day was overcast and very muggy, but the rain held off so all kept dry! Temperature was cooler than recent days following a steep overnight drop in temperature
The four young anglers competing had only started fishing just over a year ago, and all had started via CRT ‘Lets Fish’ events.

They were representing four local Clubs, Northampton Nene, Wellingborough, and Luton. The competition was over 4 hours, and limits those taking part to 3 Metres for the first 90 Minutes.

Roach, perch and skimmers made up the nets with the bigger bream failing to show, although they could be seen ‘bubbling’ out in the Canal during the match.

As it was their first competitive coaches were on hand to assist. All will go on to participate in the CRT ‘Festival of Fishing on the Shropshire Union in September, and all of us learned a lot and really enjoyed the day.

Cups and prizes. (Donated by club members and other local anglers) were presented by John Ellis of CRT and comprised rods and reels and other tackle. Sensas had provided bags of groundbait for the competitors

the parents of those who fished really appreciated us arranging the event and appreciated the effort put in. We owe a great deal to the coaches from all the clubs who gave up the day to enable the event to take place and thank them for supporting us.

Wednesday Match report GUC Cooks Wharf 21/7/21.
8 anglers met at Cooks Wharf car park for the draw.
Despite recent thunder and rain it was already very hot and sunny. The Canal looked in good form with plenty of colour and a slight tow due to lock movements.
The peace and tranquility was shattered due to contractors turning up to cut the towing path grass, with unfortunately plenty of grass clippings ending up in the Canal.
Happily this did not have too much effect on the fishing which in the main was very good for most. A high number of boats present meant that we were spread over the whole pound and into the next below the lock. Pinkie or dead maggot over groundbait was the most successful method on the day and responsible for Tim Watts taking top spot with 96 fish for 8lbs 13ozs most roach from below the lock. Dudley Frankland weighed 7lbs 15oz 8drm mostly small Bream, roach and perch, with Ian Orbell taking 3rd place with 7lbs 8ozs of mostly small Bream.

Wednesday Match Report Wyboston River Ouse 14-7-21
Twelve anglers met to fish the river on a Wednesday that started warm but overcast, with the overcast clearing late morning and the day becoming clear and sunny. The river looked in fine condition with good flow and a tinge of colour.

The day started with Steve Osman, who we hadn’t seen for some time realising he had left his keepnet behind, and unfortunately this week nobody had a spare!

Dudley Frankland lost a large ‘Lump’ taken on a cage feeder full of chopped worm and a Dendrabena on the hook when it weeded as he tried to net it. Richard Gibbs had an 18 inch pike that took a small hooked Chub on two successive casts, which he very nearly landed on the second attempt, the pike only letting go at the last minute.

Chris Howard lost a fish which he played for some time, believed to be a large Chub which took a tare and weeded itself three times, only to swim free, and then eventually shed the hook, while Dennis Hunt who was fishing a stick float for the roach hooked and played a fish that turned out to be a pike of about 5lb for some minutes before losing it at the net.
One of our newest and least experienced anglers Ray, who only started fishing last year managed to frame for the first time today, landing the biggest fish he has ever caught, a 6lb bream taken on a grain of sweetcorn. Ray also admitted to losing a few more due to inexperience but was absolutely delighted with his catch!
Steve Lathwell fished a 6 metre whip to take 5lb 12oz 8drm, narrowly beating Richard Gibbs into 4th place by 8drms! Colin Holmes struggled until later in the match when he too tried Corn on a feeder rod and had two decent bream, the biggest of which made up 6lb 8oz of his 10lb 12oz winning catch.

Luton Committee/Bailiffs and Work Party Volunteers Match 2021
The Winner this year was Beckerings bailiff Mark Sessions, pushing coach Mark Brooks who was last years winner into second place, with bailiff Colin Holmes coming in third. Well done Mark!
Eight fished at Eaton Ford, on a day that turned out to be the hottest of the year so far with bright sunshine and a cloudless sky. The river looked perfect with good flow and a tinge of colour, but it was always going to be a struggle in the bright hot conditions and heavy river traffic.
Many fished Hemp and Tare in an effort to avoid the ever present bleak to reach the Roach, while others fished a variety of baits on a feeder hoping for a bigger bream or Perch.
The anglers couldn’t seem to get any consistency using Hemp and Tare and as the day got warmer, the river traffic increased and the bites became less frequent, but all who came enjoyed the day in the (very) warm Sunshine, and thanks to Stuart and Glen the Bailiffs at Eaton Ford for keeping such a fantastic venue.

MATCH REPORT _ Sensas Oakwood Canal League Round 2
The second round of the Sensas Oakwood Canal League was fished on our Grand Union Canal Town South sections on Sunday 10th July and again produced some fantastic weights that illustrate just how good the fishing on the Grand Union is for those who understand how to fish it.
The Canal has really switched on in the last few weeks after a lean period when the fishing was tough, it went very clear due to cold weather, lack of boat movements and delayed spawning.
Total weight of fish caught by the 35 Anglers who fished was 367lb, which averages out at 10lb 8oz per competitor.
First place went to Butch Murphy
(Oakwood Green) who had 13 fish totalling 32lbs 9oz of prime Canal Bream.
Second Place
J Drack (Image Red) 25lbs 1oz
Third S Joy (Image Blue) 24lbs 2oz.
The guys had good backup weights and report plenty of Roach and Bream showing along the section, and some extremely good fish were lost during the day, Butch reports all who fished enjoyed the day.

MATCH REPORT - Queens Works AC
Queens Works AC were on the river at Wyboston for their third Summer League match last Sunday.
With the river rising and pushing hard, all sixteen anglers struggled for bites.
Steve "Blash" Townsend used his famed bream tactics to win the match. He fed groundbait and pellet to catch 2 decent Bream and a few roach and skimmers for 6lbs 8oz.
Dave Pearson was runner-up with 6lbs and Phil Mann was third with 3lbs 12oz.
Section winners were Paul Stokes with 3lbs 8oz and Vince Baron with 3lbs 10oz.
The Wooden Spoon was awarded to Stuart Kiteley, who went home early.

River Ouse - Wyboston
Brian Turner managed to get a couple of hours in after the match on the Ouse at Wyboston yesterday, he dusted the quiver tip rod off and although out of practice he bagged a few and really enjoyed it he forgot just how much fun it is

David Howell had this 22lb 5oz Common from the Ouse looking at its tail it has probably had a lucky escape at some point. we did receive a facebook comment that this fish was recognised as one that was rescued after being stranded following the floods in St Neots.

John Les Parker had a good bag of Roach.
River Ouse Lavendon
Member Andrei fished the Downstream section on the River Ouse at Lavendon and caught a very nice chub. This stretch is known to hold some great specimen sized fish so well worth a try.

Beckerings Reservoir
Ian Inness had a 17lb Common taken off the top.

Wednesday Match Report 7th July Bragenham Side
Eight met to fish on a day that started with heavy overcast which later cleared and became warm and sunny. The wind was light at first but picked up towards the middle of the day making fishing a pole difficult at times.
There was a few boats in the second hour, but after this it was relatively undisturbed.
The anglers fished a number of methods, Pole, waggler and tip and all caught fish.
Dennis Hunt lost a Carp after 30 mins which took his bait at 6 Metres on No 4 Elastic, and Barry Roper lost another on the inside soon after on No3 elastic, both fish taking pinkies.
Richard Gibbs fished the tip, and after taking a Perch and some smaller fish had a quiet match until the last hour when he took 3 decent Bream on worm.
Barry Roper fished a pole but due to the increasing wind fishing long proved very difficult at times.
Dudley Frankland also fished a tip and took Bream, while Dennis Hunt managed to lose a number of decent bream.

Slapton Car Park
The club would like to thank life member Kevin Chadfield for making and fitting a super new gate on the entrance to the towpath at the Club car park at Slapton. It's much wider than the original gate and makes trolley access much easier.

That's it for this week,
