Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area. 31st August 2020

A Bumper August Bank Holiday edition of our weekly news report this week as despite the wet and windy weather at the start of this week many of you have been out on the banks and have had good results so we have received lots of catch reports.

Beckerings Reservoir

Only the 2nd time on Beckerings for Paul Parkinson and a 48 hour session resulted in four fish, 2 carp the first at 19lb 10oz and the other at 16lb 1oz. He also had 2 decent sized Bream. All were caught on the mad baits iso cream on slip d rig with a pva stick of pellets.

Also at Beckerings Jason Wilson had a memorable session catching one of the reservoirs largest residents during a 48hr session at Beckerings - a Catfish weighing in at 61lb 4oz a new PB for him it took an hour to land it. He also caught his first Common carp at 16lb 10oz.

Tim Marler fished a short afternoon session at Beckerings and had a 22lb Common

North House Lake

After his Beckerings success Paul Parkinson also fished at North House this week and managed a 20lb 7oz Mirror Carp again the tactic was a slip d rig using a wicked white popup and PVA stick of pellets.

Rod Gladston had a nice golden common on Saturday afternoon weighing in at 27lb 5oz

Wyboston River Ouse

Wyboston regular Wojciech caught nice sized Tench at 6lb 1oz.

David Steed braved the brutally strong winds and did a 3 night session on Kempston lake enjoying a socially distant social with 2 friends resulting in a capture of 4 fish between them. David had Commons of 19lb 8oz and 20lb. Gary Mcghee had a 20lb 9oz Common and James Hunter one at 25lb 4oz all the fish were caught on MadBaits Pop Ups.
Also at Kempston Lake Janusz Badowski had a 24lb 2oz Mirror on Sunday evening.

River Thames - Sonning

Luton members are able to fish this stretch via a water share agreement with Barnet and District Angling Club. This week a 15lb 2oz Barbel was reported via their Facebook page. A little further afield but well worth a trip if Barbel are a target species.

Match Report

Butch Murphy the league organiser sent in this report from the recent Sensas Oakwood League - Round 4 match at Ivinghoe.

"Ivinghoe fished brilliantly with 9 double figure weights and another 10 weights over 8lb out of a total of 30 anglers that's top canal fishing"

Wednesday Match Report by Dennis Hunt.

Seven members of the Wednesday group met at Cooks Wharf this week to fish ‘Away’ on the Tring water which is being used for the Canal Pairs heat on Sunday. Two of our members are competing and wanted to practice, so we had all agreed to fish with them.

It was overcast when we met in the car park, but this soon turned into steady rain as we made our way down the towpath. The rain got heavier as we set up, and continued through the day, but we were soon into the fish with many having a bright first hour at 4 Metres. All the usual canal baits scored well fish being taken on Squatt, Pinkies and Caster. The winner and second who are fishing as a pair Sunday fished the waggler over in what turned out to be an extremely wide and deep section of Canal.

Despite the persistent rain all who came enjoyed the day. There is no picture of the winning bag as Richard was so anxious to get out of the rain he tipped them back before the camera was produced!

Here is this weeks round up of Luton Angling Club's News and catch reports.Don’t forget to send in your reports as all pictures sent in are entered in to our monthly photo prize competition with a £25.00 prize awarded each month to the best picture judged by the Luton AC committee. July’s winner was Devin Gregory with his 32lb 4oz Common Carp from Kempston.

North House Lake
Crispin Valentine had a nice little 17lb Common from North House Lake on Saturday evening. The algal bloom appeared again briefly this week following the spell of hot weather and we are monitoring the oxygen levels on a daily basis. The lake remains open at this time and we ask members to let us know immediately if they see any dead fish or signs of fish in distress and care should be taken by members to limit contact with the potentially toxic algal scum when it is present on the water.

Beckerings Reservoir
Paul Parkinson fished the Reservoir for the first time and he wasn't disappointed as he had a lovely Mirror carp at 17lb it was caught on iso cream with a pva stick of pellets.

Neil Cox also had a 48hr session at Beckerings and caught a 24lb Common an hour after setting up. Later in the session he moved to the  opposite end of the reservoir and had a 16lb fish within 5 mins of casting tight to the margins he then had his third fish of the session weighing 15lb 8oz and then the fourth a mid-double Common with his alarms giving him an 02:20am wake up call. All the fish were caught on mad baits.

Grand Union Canal
Bailiff Andy Gladdish caught a lovely 15lb GUC fully scaled Mirror which is almost certainly another of the 3000 stockies that were introduced to the canal some years ago when they only a few inches long It was caught on 6lb line and 5lb hooklength on a 9.5m pole

Kempston Lake
Dale Carter was enjoying the heat with a stunning PB Mirror at 25lb from Kempston on Monday

Wyboston River Ouse
Queens Works fished a match on the River Ouse at Wyboston last weekend and had a great day despite the high temperatures.  Double figure weights of Roach were reported. Various baits were used with the winner catching on maggot, feeding with a bait dropper to get through the bleak, while others used Hemp and Tares with Elderberry, a little used bait these days but deadly on the day.

Their comment was Wyboston is brilliant for Roach, we love it!

The best Fish taken was a Perch of 2lbs 8oz taken on maggot an hour before the end of the match.

Wednesday Match Report
Dennis Hunt sent us in his usual weekly match report "The Wednesday match this week was held at Cooks Wharf. It was a hot and humid day, and to try and get some shade we went for a long walk along the towpath. Two new members joined us, Dave Britain and Steve Osman, so five fished, a bit light this week due to holidays.

We started well and all had fish in the first hour, but the fishing slowed as the temperature steadily rose, coming back a little in the last hour.

We had rumbling thunder all around us and when packing up we had a torrential downpour but being under the tree canopy we escaped a soaking.

We walked back to the cars and started to pack away, and the heavens opened again, and this time we all got wet!

Let's Fish Events 2020
Luton AC's Angling Trust Coaches have been busy over the last few weeks delivering a series of Free "Covid - Safe" Let's Fish events at Three Locks Stoke Hammond and also some other local locations. These events enable young people and adults to try their hand at fishing. The coaches have also participated in a couple of special events for local scout groups so far they have had over 80 people attend and all caught fish despite the very hot weather and it looks like they have launched several angling careers with many attending wanting to follow on and take up the sport.
There are some further events planned so if you are interested there may still be a few places available have a look at the canal and river trust angling facebook page where bookings can be made. Please note that due to the health and safety requirements and guidelines relating to COVID-19 walk ups are not permitted and all attendees must pre book a place.

North House Lake
Jordan Philip and Nathaniel Boston fished North House last weekend and had three 20lb+ fish between them.

Jordan fished again on Tuesday for a short session of only a few hours and had this 24lb Mirror within the first 10 minutes of the session.

Also at North House Bailiff Brian Turner had a great looking Dark Common at 21lb
Beckerings Reservoir
Matthew Scott and David Flint Cox had a good session on Beckerings and caught multiple fish and said the surface fishing was great as usual.

Jamie Gladish also caught one of the Beckerings beauties and he also reported a new PB Common for his mate Ty Foster.

We also received a report that the carp known as Half Lin was caught by someone surface fishing weighing 35lb along with another common of 25lb - these were not reported officially so we do not have any pictures.

Match Reports
Five anglers fished the Wednesday Knock up match this week, They fished an ‘Away’ venue this week as some of them needed to practice for the Canal Pairs heat to be held at the end of August. The group fished the Aylesbury Arm of the GUC at Bierton, Bridge 15 on the Arm to be precise. The day started quite chilly and still but warmed up as it went on with a very blustery wind getting up later.

Top angler was Barry Roper who put 113 fish for 5lbs 12oz on the scales. Barry caught his mixed bag on Caster fished on the bottom in the centre of the Canal.

Second was Richard Gibbs with 2lb 11oz and third was Nuala Gray with 2lb 5oz.

The day wasn't entirely without incident, with Nuala having two sections of her pole blown off the rest on into the Canal on two occasions, fortunately they were retrieved! they also had a boat that couldn't steer, which provided some entertainment, they made captain Pugwash look like the captain of the QE2, it’s hard to describe the incompetence politely.

If anyone is thinking of fishing the venue soon you do need to take a weed rake.

They said that they will almost certainly be back to fish there again in the Autumn.

This week on Wednesday the group will fish Cooks Wharf, meet in the Car Park for a 9am walk off draw fish 10 till 3, £5.00 optional pools, non-members are welcome to join us provided they pay the day ticket
