Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Week Ending 25th February 2024

Here is all the latest news, information and catch reports from all Luton Angling Club waters for the week ending 25th February 2024.

Another very wet week and most River sections in flood and ground conditions saturated and very muddy at most venues. It hasn't put off some of our members though, as you can see in the picture below!
a dedicated (or mad) angler on South Lagoon

Predator Match
We had to cancel the Predator match that was due to take place on Saturday, The bailiffs were closely monitoring the situation and with all the rain and water levels still rising on Thursday and ground conditions completely un-suitable with most pegs under water and banks very muddy and slippery, we had to put safety first and make the difficult decision to postpone this event. A shame as we were all looking forward to it.

We will look to re-schedule later in the year sometime after September. A few participants kindly opted to donate their entry fees to the nominated charity rather than receive refunds and others asking us hold on to the fee for when the match is re-scheduled later in the year. So at least the charity will still benefit from the non-event. If you were due to take part and haven't let me know what you want me to do with your entry fee please get in touch via the facebook page or reply to the predator match email.

South Lagoon
Not put off by the aforementioned conditions Marek Zanko still fished the lagoon on Friday and despite the high water levels he had success having 4 bites, one was a Zander that escaped while being landed and 2 Pike the largest of which was around 12lb.
Marek Zanko - South Lagoon Pike 12lb

Beckerings Reservoir
Kieron Logan caught his PB Pike at Beckerings on Saturday 10th but only just sent in his report so we have included it this week. He had his rods set up and out for no more than 25 mins before the bite alarm went off and as soon as he struck he knew he'd hooked something big. It was 112cm and 20lb 14oz and he was absolutely buzzing with his catch.

Martin Scholes fished on Saturday and had one of the Ide at 3lb 8oz.

Grand Union Canal - The Globe
We were back on the Canal this week and eleven of us met in light rain in the Globe car park for our draw.
The weather forecast for the day was far from favourable, with rain and heavy winds later, and the canal was a light milky coffee colour with an orange hue, so I think we all knew we were in for a testing day from the off.
Having assessed the moored boat situation, we decided to peg from the power lines back to Leighton lock.
We set off along the towpath and as we got to our pegs the rain intensified, so it was an umbrella day, with lashings against the squally wind, which was at times very strong and veered in direction making conditions even more challenging.
Due to most boaters opting to stay tucked up inside, we were unsurprisingly not troubled by boats moving about!
The day proved tough for many. Dudley Frankland pegged towards the old swing bridge narrows had a better day than most. He fished his pole short and fed groundbait laced with worm, caster, and dead reds down near shelf. He fished half a Deandra on a .6 float bulked down on a positive rig to weigh a 4lb 1oz catch of bream.
Sean Leatherland pegged just past the narrows had one large skimmer taken at 3mtrs on pinkie, with the rest of his bag taken using pinkie and big maggot over groundbait at 12mtrs to weigh 2lb.
Colin Holmes took third. He found nothing in the middle, then went over the far side, and fished well over depth using pinkie. He lost the first fish when a gust of wind whipped the pole around and the skimmer came out of the water and fell off! He then had two skimmers and a hybrid in the next 15 minutes, and then went back to spectating! Colin weighed 1lb 10oz.
After the end of the match, we retired to the Globe to dry out, have a pint, and thank Julie for allowing us to use the car park.
Our thanks are also due to Tracy assisting with the weigh-in on what was a challenging day.

Kingfishers Coaching Day on the Bank at How End - 19th February
This week is half term for most of the local area , and many of our young Luton anglers were desperate to get on the banks again. Unfortunately, not all were able to make it to our session today, but we had four keen young anglers on the bank on what turned out to be a very pleasant practice session.
With the rivers in flood and the Canal out of sorts Luton Coaches opted to take our Kingfishers to How End, where we practiced Pole, Waggler and Quiver tip fishing, and all our anglers caught silver fish and Carp.
It was lovely to see our young anglers putting into practice some of the things they had learnt in our classroom sessions and being able to use some of the new tackle they had at Christmas for the first time.
For some it was also the first experience catching Carp, especially using a waggler, and some nice fish were landed and safely returned.
Everyone, Coaches and Kingfishers enjoyed the day out, and we hope to get everyone out on the bank again soon.
If you know a young angler who would like to learn to fish, join our Kingfishers and fish with friends of their own age please contact the Club, we have a full program mapped out for this year, and we would love to meet you.

Kingfishers Winter Classroom Coaching Session
This week following the outing to How End we had four of our young anglers come to the winter indoor session at Bushmead community hub in Luton.
The Coaches thought that after the bankside session at How End on Monday it would be useful to go through seat box setup again, so we asked our young anglers to bring their boxes with them so we could help, and them make sure they had correct posture and an ergonomically correct setup when fishing. This proved very useful, and we were also able to help with some very reasonably pricesd second hand accessories to aid them.
We then did a session looking at groundbait mixing, where we practised trying different mixes in the water tank and watching how these break down to increase the Kingfishers' understanding of what is happening beneath the water.
Following this we had a session on types of hooks and their uses, and then went on to practice tying spade end hooks with a Drennan hook tier, which our young anglers enjoyed, all getting successful results by the time they left.
They all left keen to practice what they learnt at home, so they can become even more proficient young anglers.

Winter League - Round 2 - Match Report.
Round 2 of the LAC Winter League took place on Sunday. Due to heavy overnight rain the anglers arrived at Town South to be greeted by a full flowing and horribly coloured canal. A quick decision was made to travel to Three Locks to see if the canal was in a better state. Thanks fully it was and therefore, it was agreed to peg above and below three locks.
Above the lock the colour looked much better but below the lock was carrying more colour due to the runoff from the road, higher ground and the tiny stream.
However, the 18 anglers remained in confident mood that we would catch despite the conditions and result for the same venue the previous Wednesday, that confidence was repaid as the venue performed better than expected.
Winner on the day was Simon Foulkes with 5lb 8oz 8drm. Having drawn end peg 10 above the locks, Simon initially fed three different lines, one on the far track with fluro pinkie and groundboat and two other lines tight over and in the boat track with chopped worm and fluro pinkie. Switching between the lines, Simon had around 2lb of fish in the first 2 hours. He then fed another line down the near side track with liquidised bread and when he tried it caught a big skimmer and 5 smaller one to complete his catch.
Adrian Smith was second. Pegged on the end peg below the lock, Adrian started on the bottom of the far shelf with breadpunch and pinkie but did not catch. A swap to his near shelf line that had been fed with ground bait resulted in a bream around 2lb and then another change to fish maggot tight to the far bank over chopped worm ended with him catching a large perch and then a smaller perch and some skimmers to end with 4lb 14ozs 8drms.
Peter Deppe came 3rd with 4lb 9oz - repeating his same place finish in the previous round. Peter fed a line at the base of the far side boat track with chopped worm, maggot and caster and caught his mostly good sized skimmer catch in the last couple of hours.
Ian Orbell came 4th with 4lb 4oz 8drms. Ian had caught small fish early but a change to a new line near the end of the match rewarded him with a large bream to boost his catch and 4th place.
The next Winter League Match is Sunday 3rd March on the GUC at Town North, if it is possible to peg if not we'll switch venue. Meet at the venue for the draw at 8.30am. £1.00 peg fee and £5.00 optional pools, fish 10am till 3pm

Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Week Ending 18th February 2024

Here is all the latest news, information and catch reports from all Luton Angling Club waters for the week ending 18th February 2024.

A very wet end to this week (Again!) with River sections in flood conditions. With the canal at Leighton Buzzard being described as
"flowing like the river Trent on an ebb tide" forcing the Winter League anglers to move their fixture this weekend to Three Locks where the canal wasn't flowing as fast but was still a horrible colour.

South Lagoon - Closed 24/2/24 for the Predator Match
Don't forget that the South Lagoon at Wyboston is closed next Saturday 24th February for the Luton AC Predator Match. Anyone fishing Friday night must leave the lake by 8am on Saturday Morning.

Beckerings Reservoir
Carp to 20lb have been reported this week though no pictures have been sent in at the time of this report The bailiffs reported that lots of fish were showing. Nice Roach and Ide are being caught as well.

Darren Savage fished Beckerings last couple of Wednesdays and amongst lots of small Roach and Perch his notable catches were a 3lb 4oz Ide and a 1lb 14oz Perch, he also had a 1lb 8oz Roach during this Wednesday session.

North House Lake
Despite an amber weather warning for rain this weekend, North House Lake was busy on Friday and Saturday night the bailiffs told me that 7 carp were caught, a couple of Commons around 20lb, a few of the smaller stockies from last October and one of the 2017 Stockies was caught by a Junior which was over 20lb.

Wednesday Match Group Report - 14th February 2024 - Three Locks
20 Anglers turned out for Wednesday's match on the GUC at Three Locks. The weather was a lot milder and dryer than recent days and with a little colour in the canal the anticipation of catching fish was high.
The match was split into two sections with half the field below the locks and the others above past the bridge. This enabled the match to incorporate a drawn pairs with one from each pair in fishing in each section.
Unfortunately the match turned out to be much tougher than the anglers thought with bigger fish making up the top three weights.
Top weight on the day was Richard Darbon. Drawn on peg one above the locks, Richard caught two large bream very early on in the match fishing maggot on the pole and then like most others struggled for bites for the rest of the match. But a few extra small fish meant Richard weighed 6lb 13os for the win.
Second was Richard Gibbs who caught a bream on a small feeder which weighed 2lb 10ozs. Richard was pegged past the boats near the bend below three locks.
Also pegged past the boats was Simon Faulkes who came third with 2lb 4oz made up of a good size bream and perch and a couple of other smaller fish. Simon caught long on the pole.
Another notable performance came from Charlie Robinson who produced a small fish masterclass. Pegged on the 1st swim opposite the boats and having gone biteless for the first hour, a change in tactic to fish bread tight to the far bank produced 43 small roach to weigh 1lb 2oz for 4th place.
However with this being a pairs match, the final results were:
1st - Richard Darbon & Charlie Robinson - 18 points - 7lb 15ozs
2nd - Richard Gibbs & Rober Baker - 18 points - 2lb 11ozs 8drm
3rd - Barry Roper & Ray Burton - 16 points - 12ozs
4th - Sean Leatherland & Adrian Smith - 13 points - 9ozs
5th - Simon Faulkers & Malcolm Ogden - 9 points - 2lb 4ozs
6th - Dennis Hunt & Colin Macbeth - 6 points - 1oz 4drms
7th - Colin Holmes & Tony Hickmott - 5 points - 1ozs
8th - Naula Gray & Les Burton - 4 points - 8drms
8th - Chris Howard & Andy Frankum - 4 points - 8drms

Here is all the latest news, information and catch reports from all Luton Angling Club waters for the week ending 11th February 2024.

Another very wet week and the River sections are again over the banks at all our River venues. Due to the wet weather we haven't had many reports.

Here is a picture of the River at Wyboston taken on Friday morning.
Flooding at Wyboston
North House Lake
Rod Gladston fished Saturday night and on Sunday morning had one of the recent stockies of weighing 10lb. The fish is stockie number 7 and was stocked in October at 9lb 2oz. The bailiffs said another one of the stockies was also caught Saturday night by a different member.

Luton AC Winter League - First Round
Last Sunday saw the staging of the first round of the LAC Winter League at Town South - GUC. This was due to be the second round however the first round was postponed due to the canal being frozen. The venue for this round was moved to Town South due to the current boat traffic on Town North caused by the current lock closure at Three Locks.
21 anglers turned out for the match and although greeted by milder dry conditions there was an awkward wind to contend with. The match was pegged from White Bridge to just past Black Bridge.
Winner on the day was Colin Holmes with 6lb 5ozs. Colin drew end peg 22 past Black Bridge and caught a lovely bream of around 3lb with his third cast and after a quiet spell landed a beautiful perch of near 3lb and then followed up with 4 small roach and a perch for his catch.
Chris Howard was second. Pegged near White Bridge, Chris started down the track and caught small fish on fluro pinkie before landing a perch of 1lb on a large red maggot. Chris then continued to catch small fish by switching close-in lines to weigh in 2lb 7ozs.
Third place was shared between Danny Worth and Peter Deppe who both weighed 2lb. Danny was pegged next to White Bridge and caught his fish on the far shelf on pinkie over groundbait. Peter caught his fish by switching between, bread punch, pinkie and chopped worm. Peter included a large perch in his catch.
Whilst some of the weights were low, everyone caught which meant points for their league standing. The LAC Winter league is based on section points. See image below for the results
The next Winter League Match is Sunday 18th February on the GUC at Town South. However an alternative venue is being considered and will be advised shortly. Meet at the venue for the draw at 8.30am. £1.00 peg fee and £5.00 optional pools, fish 10am till 3pm.

Match Report 7th February 2024 Danni’s How End
The Wednesday Group had intended to fish the River at Eaton Ford this week, but we sought an alternative venue after consulting Stuart the bailiff about venue ground conditions and the forecast wind and rain on Tuesday night. We met at a very soggy How End on Wednesday morning, with a chill in the air . The day was almost windless but cold starting at around 4C and appearing to get colder as the day wore on.
We conducted our peg draw and made our way through the mud to our pegs. Danni’s was holding colour, but the water temperature had dropped following the overnight rain and the lake was almost flat calm with no ripple when we started to fish. It turned out to be a day where one side of the lake seemed to fish much better than the other, where anglers sometimes struggled for bites.
Our in-form Andy Frankum again bagged top slot, he started by feeding Caster to the Island and an edge line over groundbait, Andy fished a waggler rod with red maggot on the hook. He caught a good net of silver fish and carp, ending with 50lb 8oz. Included in Andy’s haul was a very nice Perch weighed individually at 2lb 9oz, a really chunky fish.
Richard Gibbs bagged second spot with 47lb 2oz by fishing two lines, a pole line 2 plus 1 inside close in, and a feeder to island. He fed groundbait, loose fed maggots and a few venue pellets, with maggots on the hook. He caught most carp on the feeder, and silvers on the inside line along with one carp, skimmers and some baby Barbel. Richard had long periods without a bite so kept alternating between lines looking for fish.
Back fishing with us full time now is Colin Holmes after his 18 month working holiday in Liverpool. Colin, a very consistent performer came 3rd this week with 30lb 11oz. Colin started using a bomb around the corner of the island and after 2 1/4 hours hadn’t had a bite.
He swapped to his pole at 2 + 2 and used a banded pellet hook bait, which started to work, but by that time didn’t have the time to catch up with the leaders. Colin said afterwards he had learned a lot and his approach to commercials has changed, the people that were catching were using smaller hooks and thinner lines than he was, his comment was wait till next time!
Thanks to all those who helped with general admin and the weigh in this week, and to Pip, Phil and Tanya for making us so welcome at short notice.

Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Week Ending 4th February 2024

Here is all the latest news, information and catch reports from all Luton Angling Club waters for the week ending 4th February 2024.

Lavendon Mill - River Ouse
On his rounds on Sunday at Lavendon upstream, Bailiff Roger spoke to three anglers fishing the venue for the first time. While he was there one of them (Alan Colclough) landed a Chub that took a feeder fished single red maggot. The fish was released unweighed but was estimated at around the 3lb mark. All 3 of the members commented on how much they liked the venue, and that they'll be returning soon.
Alan Colclough - Chub from Lavendon
Roger fished a short 4 hour session himself on Monday and had 3 Roach (one not pictured), 2 Skimmers and in the last 30 minutes before it got dark, a couple of Bream. The mild weather and good flow on the river seems to have got the fish feeding quite well. As usual he missed a few bites and lost a decent Bream as well. All were caught on double red maggot with groundbait and chopped worm in the feeder.
Roger Bland - Lavendon Bream and Roach
Roger also reported that anglers were catching plenty of Roach, this week along with Perch and Bream. Since we have built the new car park the venue is being used more and moving forward we expect some good catches from this stretch. Some years ago it produced lots of specimen size fish but the lack of decent and secure parking meant that the venue fell out of favour with a lot of our members - give it a go and let us know how you get on.

Biddenham River Ouse
Fishing at Biddenham last Sunday, patience paid off for Dexter Allen as he only had the one bite on feeder fished chopped worm with 4 dendras on the hook.
His dad Edward had quite a few nice roach and dace on bread feeder with maggot hook bait, fishing across the river in the main flow.
Dexter Allen - Perch
Club Chairman and Treasurer, and regular contributor to our reports Fergal O'Kane fished at Biddenham on Sunday and had two Pike the largest of which is pictured below. He also had a few Dace on Maggot.
Fergal O'Kane - Pike
Beckerings Reservoir
Dan Lynch missed the deadline for last weeks report so I have included his catch this week, it was caught on Thursday 25th Jan and was the only fish he had during his session, it was a common weighing 13lb Common which screamed off at 4am in the wind and rain. It was caught on a Papi-Nut boillie with Mamba Corn Topper on a size 6 Mamba krank hook, using a small pva bag with pellet and crushed boilie.
Nick Lynch - Common Carp
Edward Allen fished the reservoir on Saturday and after arriving at 8am he starte fishing with a groundbait feeder, and double maggot on size 18 hook to 4lb line and he had indications from the start but didn't get an actual bite until just after 10am which resulted in a carp at 7lb (one of the stockies). He thought it was a big Bream at first until it popped up near the net and took a fast run!

He then went a further 6 hours (very frustrating!) before getting the next bite which was a big skimmer and then he had the roach before missing 2 further fast bites before sunset.

North House Lake - Otter fence work
Our contractor has been busy at North House Lake this week carrying out improvements to the oldest section of our otter fence. Many of the fence posts were replaced and further underground skirt was installed to deter the rabbits from digging under the fence. We also have had a new 5ft pedestrian gate installed which is now the only point of access for club members. The large gate is now for maintenance access only and your club key will not operate the lock on this gate.

Please as with all our gates please ensure the gate is fully closed and locked after use. Please also try not to damage or bend the mesh on the gate as this compromises the protection.

On Saturday night a couple of the new stockies were caught both around the 7lb mark, and they were in stunning condition.

Wednesday Match Group Report - Grand Union Canal - Town South Leighton Buzzard
The Wednesday boys were back on the bank this week with their first official scheduled match of 2024, and 18 of us were on the bank full of optimism . We had intended to fish Town North but had to change venue because of the number of moored boats in that section caused by the current Three Locks stoppage.
The weather started dull and overcast, but the day was supposed to get warmer and brighter with some sun later. This unfortunately didn’t materialise, the day remaining dull and cold with at times a chilly wind blowing along the section, making presentation difficult The Canal was holding colour, but the water had flow towards the overflows and is still very cold after the recent freeze at 4C, most knew the day would be a challenge, but we were happy to be wetting a line again.
Most fished a pole alternating between long and short lines, and most usual winter Canal baits, Bread Punch, Squatt, and Pinkies were the favourites on light rigs and small hooks. The bites were challenging, and many difficult to hit, being tentative half dips of the float bristle, demanding good concentration to connect.
First place this week was taken by Andy Frankum, who was the only one to connect with the bigger fish. He was fishing down the far side shelf with bread punch and red maggots and had bagged 6 small fish when at 1 o’clock the bream suddenly showed up for 20 minutes and then disappeared again. He finished with 4 bream taken in that 20 Mins for 13lb 9oz, demolishing the rest of the field.
Second place was taken by Paul Carr, the father of two of our junior anglers who could join us this week, having fishing friendly shifts at work. Paul will admit his fishing has improved no end since his boys joined the club, and learning the pole has been a whole new experience for him. All his fish were caught 3 pole lengths out on single red maggot over a bed of groundbait with loose fed pinkies. He had a mixed bag of Gudgeon, small roach and perch with a ‘Bonus’ big perch to finish with 2lb 3oz 8drms.
Dennis Hunt took 3rd place, Dennis started on the inside with punch over liquidised bread, changing to loose fed squatt and Pinkie on the hook when bites slowed. Dennis was also feeding groundbait and pinkie to the far shelf, alternating between lines to keep the fish coming. With 45 mins to go, he fed chopped worm over with worm on the hook and managed a slightly bigger perch and a skimmer, unfortunately bumping another. Dennis finished with a mixed bag of over 50 fish, roach, gudgeon, perch, and skimmers to finish with 2lb 2oz
Thanks to all those who helped with general Admin and pegging and Tracey for assisting with the weigh-in this week.

Our next match is on Wednesday, 7th February, but due to unfavourable ground conditions in the car park at Eaton Ford, we are now going to be fishing Danni's lake at How End. Anyone taking part should NOT arrive at the Venue until 8am. There is also a £10 peg fee at this venue.
For anyone thinking of joining us for the first time can we ask you message us so we know you are coming before turning up, so we can ensure we have room as this will allow us to better manage the pegging. You will be asked to produce your Club book at first appearance, so please have it with you.
