Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Week Ending 27th October 2024

Here is all this weeks news, information and catch reports from Luton Angling Club.

South Lagoon Wyboston
Since the recent flooding we have been hearing numerous catch reports of smaller carp being caught from the South Lagoon, Being connected to the river the stock in the lagoon varies with fish coming and goimg so you never know what you are going to catch,We think that these smaller carp, due to their general condition are escapees from commercial waters during the floods, as they look like they have been caught a lot. Please let us know if you catch any of these. They may like their new home and stick around and grow on.

Two day ticket anglers Darrell and Thomas had a red letter 24 hours on the Lagoon as they had 11 carp between them ranging from 8lb to 17lb they also had a few bream they didn't count here are pictures of some of the carp.

After his victory in the recent Predator Challenge Match that was held on 12th October, Ray Dempsey had to have another go at Pike fishing on South Lagoon. He fished peg 25 on 16th October and at 8:30am was rewarded with a 10lb 4oz pike that was taken on a popped up smelt. He also had 3 others throughout the day 13lb 2 oz, 6lb, 10lb 1oz
He also lost one at the net and had an abortive run . All in all, it was a brilliant day. He did forget to wear his glove on two of the pike and paid the price as he got a cut finger! He thinks we were definitely right to take out peg 25 in the match draw as it definitely gives an advantage.

Louis England had a 25lb 4oz Mirror during a 24hr session on Friday it was taken on a popup over a bed of pellet and hempseed.
As part of our ongoing stocking program to ensure our waters are well stocked into the future the club added 11 more C3 carp between 6lb and 9lb to North House Lake last week. As always we received some stunning, healthy looking fish from Priory Fishery Ltd we look forward to seeing these grow and as we are seeing with the previous fish from Priory Fishery we expect them to do really well. Match report (not really ...,)
Last week we reported on the Daiwa Global Celebration Event, and this week we were mentioned in a report written by one of the parents of one of our Juniors that took part, it is a great and amusing read, and we thank Helen Price for sharing it with us and look forward to future reports from her.....

Here's what Helen Wrote....

"I've noticed that 'match reports' are a thing in angling so thought I'd contribute my own as clueless adult to a teenage son ('Boy') new to fishing. Bear with me whilst I get to grips with the terminology ...
Our journey to Shropshire for the Daiwa Global Communities Celebration event with the Canal & River Trust was entirely unremarkable save for the ravaging storm pursuing us for the entirety of the three-hour drive, the mysterious metal box with its connected cabling and tubes that partially detached itself from the underside of the car at an unknown point during the trip, necessitating an unscheduled visit to Telford Kwik Fit, the despair felt by Boy on discovering that a phone with 6% battery remaining will not serve to soothe the auditory canals of its owner for longer than the time taken to navigate from one side of Bicester to the other, and the visceral anger of Girl (9) - and subsequent retribution delivered to the rest of the vehicle's occupants - on declaring that the cheese in her breakfast muffin tasted too strongly of the cheese from which it was, presumably, composed, and had therefore, in her view, rendered the entire item inedible.
Arriving at Harper Adams University, HQ for the day's proceedings, we witnessed a spectacular procession of flags that would've impressed the most fervent vexillophile, marking the official opening of this fabulous celebration event. Boy had planned to participate in the ceremony but chose, somewhat reluctantly, to remain in the car due to an unresolvable malfunction of his telescopic flag pole.
Undeterred by this patriotically related setback, we reassembled alongside several hundred young anglers and their companion adults on the verdant banks of the Shropshire Union Canal, the venue for the day's competition. As anticipated, predominantly by Boy himself, as a non-angler I proved to be of limited use during the six hours' set-up and fishing, although I fancy I have made small improvements in fluidity of movement from my camping chair to the standing position, which served me well in those moments where assistance was requested and required prompt action. Retrieving the unfinished end of a hotdog threatening to fall into mud was one such occasion of note, and although my performance did not receive verbal feedback from Boy, I took the absence of any remonstration from his direction to mean I had performed well.
Perhaps somewhat unusually for a match report, I won't go into detail here about which lines were used, which bait favoured, what tactics employed, how the canal fished or indeed which species of fish were caught and how many. This is because I have no idea about any of that, as my attention was consumed by the large colony of bees swarming in the hedge directly behind my head for the duration of proceedings. It is, I feel, testament to my vigilance that I avoided being stung even once by the droning mob and only missed passing the landing net on three occasions, only two of which resulted in the fish 'getting away' as I believe is the term. So, a successful day all told.
The prize-giving ceremony was, as anticipated, a fabulous celebration of young angling talent, and we were especially pleased to discover the nearest petrol station to event HQ stocked in-car phone chargers with the requisite adapters, thus ensuring a peaceful return journey for only moderately inflated cost, and a price most would be willing to pay in the circumstances.
To conclude my report, I would like to extend thanks to Daiwa for their generous sponsorship, to John Ellis and the Canal & River Trust for organising a fantastic event, and particularly to the coaches at Luton Angling Club for their excellent guidance and encouragement, and for their infinite reserves of patience shown when attempting to teach me how to tie two pieces of fishing line together.
Footnote: whilst the weather in Shropshire favoured us on this day, the weeks are growing cooler with the changing seasons and my thoughts necessarily turn to practical yet lightweight and fully water-resistant outdoor wear. Pockets essential, inner fleece lining preferred, consider detachable bee guard. My inbox is open for a limited time to receive declarations of interest for sponsorship and endorsement of female activewear (UK M, size 12-14, unsure of conversion to European measurements)"

Match Report 23rd October Ash Lake Alders Farm - report by Dennis Hunt Luton AC match secretary.
I know when I’m beaten. Well done, Helen Price for the superb celebration match report this week!
We had intended to fish the Nene this week, but unfavourable conditions with very high flow necessitated a change, so we arranged to go to Alders Farm instead.
We had a somewhat reduced turnout due to various medical ailments, two of the guys turning up at the venue and deciding to go home before the fishing started because they didn’t feel well, and two calling off the night before, so our usual turnout was somewhat depleted, and we were down to 11 fishing.
The day was misty and mild, starting at around 9C and rising to 15C with little wind, and the lake looked lovely with fish topping as we arrived.
Dave Ridley had a great day. He started fishing at 6m using a method feeder with fishery micro-pellets & red maggots, feeding 6mm fishery pellets & maggots over the top. Dave caught 4 carp in the first hour, but then it went very quiet. He then changed lines and fished at 25m, but only picked up a bream & a skimmer. The change not having really produced, Dave came back in to 6m after 45 mins which is where he caught the rest of the carp & a bonus perch of 2lb 10 oz, to finish with 91lb 5oz.
Sean Leatherland chose to fish his pole on top 2 plus 2 sections on two different spots, one directly in front and one towards the reeds to his left . Sean caught steadily on red maggot and corn, but had a number fall off as did many of the others fishing. Sean weighed 12 Carp and 4lb of small perch, ending with 63lb 12 oz.
Third was Steve Lathwell, who said the venue fished harder than he expected. He started on the method feeder with Method Mix and dead reds on the hook for 2 small carp. After an hour, he moved to his short pole line and had a few small skimmers with again dead reds over groundbait where he took the rest of his catch ending with 48lb 8oz.
Andy Francome Feed caster and chopped worm down the edge and at 10m out , with the most productive line being down the edge. Andy took skimmers and carp for 47lb 1oz to finish fourth.
Our ‘Weighmaster General’ Roger Baker appeared to do the weigh-in fresh from Umpiring his bowls match, and superbly assisted by Tracy did a magnificent job of the weigh in as usual.
The day ended in and eventful manner with the two pigmy goats that are resident at the fishery ending up on a small platform with me at the end of the match, after being chased by the fishery owners dog, which had escaped from the house. After the mischievous dog had snaffled and scoffed two pork pies belonging to boys fishing the lake above with their grandad, it then scared the two goats who decided to take refuge on my very small platform. At one time, I wondered if the two goats, me and all my gear, were going swimming, but fortunately everything ended well and the dog returned to the house!
Thanks to Trevor Price at Alders Farm, all those who assisted with running the match, and our best wishes to all those who felt unwell and retired early this week.

Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Week Ending 20th October 2024

Here is this week’s round up of news, information and catch reports from Luton Angling Club.

Beckerings Reservoir
Amer Jawad had a late 3 hour before dark session at Beckerings. He managed three bites and three slabs. This one was 7lb.
Amer Jawad - Beckerings Bream
Bailiff Mark sessions had a short 3hr session at Beckerings on Thursday and had a lovely mirror at just under 25lb. He also had a low 20s common and a mid double.

The bailiffs also reported that night anglers he encountered as they were leaving told him they'd had a 29lb common and a 27lb Mirror.

South Lagoon - Wyboston
We are hearing reports of lots of small common carp between 5-8lb being caught from South Lagoon and 9 caught over a few days which is quite unusual, the fish look like they have been caught a lot in the past as several have historic hook damage so have possibly escaped during the flooding from a match or commercial lake.

Grand Union Canal
Lee Waring has been targeting the Perch on the Grand Union Canal recently and has had some nice results, on his first session he had 10 Perch well over 2lb and then on his next session he caught caught 8 Perch this evening, they were all over 2lb and two weighed in at 3lb & 3lb 1oz. All on legered worm. He lost a few too due to using barbless hooks.

Daiwa Global Celebration 20th October
What a fantastic weekend for our Luton Kingfishers this has been!
Our eight young Luton anglers who made the journey to fish on the Shropshire Union Canal were among the 250 invited to fish in the CRT / Daiwa Global competition, where anglers are divided into teams representing different countries. They all put in absolutely storming performances. Our anglers fished in Irish, Scottish, French, German, and several English teams
The weather in Shropshire on Friday night was terrible , with heavy rain, and Saturday morning left flooded lanes and very wet fields where it was originally intended to park cars, which resulted in a hasty revision of plans. Thankfully the weather after the rain had passed was superb, a brilliant autumn day, and everything went off without a hitch.
Harper Adams University, a fantastic venue was used as the HQ for the day and the event featured an initial parade of flags before the match and the presentations afterwards
The placings for the teams with Luton team members are below with the individual results for our lads shown in brackets.
Cadets (6-10) fished in Team France 7th (Leo 24th / 72) Team Ireland Green 12th (Alex 48 /72)
Young Juniors 11-13 fished in Team Germany 19th (Dexter 48/52) Team Scotland 14th (Maxwell 41/58)
Our Juniors fished in English Blue 1st (Kaden 12 / 58) , English Violet (Daniel 10/58) Ireland 11th (Jack 9/58) with Global Superstars Green 10th (Indy 42 /58
Daniel and Jack in full juniors also achieved best in team for their respective teams.
Full results can be found on Hotfishin
This was a stunning performance as far as Luton were concerned, well done to everyone.
A big thank you to CRT and Daiwa for running the event, and providing the prizes, and most of all to our parents for their encouragement and support as without that our young anglers wouldn’t have been able to take part.

Match Report 16th October GUC ‘The Globe’
After the continuing rain and colder nights last week, Wednesday morning started mild, overcast and drizzly. The starting air temperature as 11C the same as the Canal water temperature, the air temperature rising through the day to 20C with the colour from the heavy rain last month starting to clear.
The morning continued overcast until lunchtime with the drizzle abating, when the sky cleared for an hour or so, clouding over again later.
We had 18 turn out for this week’s match pegged from the Globe toward Leighton Lock, and we didn’t have a huge number of boats go through the section during the match. The canal while not fishing to its full potential now did turn up some respectable weights.
First this week was Colin McBeth, who fed just short of the fallen tree in the water with 2 balls of groundbait, with squatt and caster mixed in. He also fed two other lines by the same tree. He started on punch at 5m and had a couple of skimmers and roach, and when that died, he went across to tree line with worm and had a couple of skimmers followed by some nice bream. Colin said it went quiet about midday so he rested that line for a while. He had some small fish from one of the other lines then went back on the original line for a few more bream. Colin topped up with groundbait and chopped worm regularly to keep the bream coming although it got much slower as the day wore on. Colin finished with 14lb 4oz.
Steve Lathwell took second with 13lb 13oz using pinkies over groundbait ,he took mostly small skimmers and said he enjoyed the days fishing.
Third was Chris Howard who with two sections of pole stick, resorted to using his trusty 3.5 Metre whip. Chris fed several lines using pinkie over groundbait taking fish off each line to end the day with 8lb.
Dennis Hunt finishing fourth started at around 6 Metres on the inside edge of the track using punch over toasted crumb, and took several small roach and a couple of skimmers until the punch line died. He then went over and fed a ball of groundbait, feeding squatt and fishing pinkie on the hook, but this didn’t really produce. Changing tactics again he fed groundbait at 13 Metres with chopped worm using broken worm on the hook and started to catch some bigger skimmer, ending with 5lb 4oz.
Dennis, like numbers of the other anglers reported that bites were not easy to hit, some being mere lifts or dips of the float and others sailed away but ended up with nothing.
Happiest man on the bank was Roger Baker who had a nice perch of just under 2lb taken on double pinkie. His beaming smile in the picture says it all, the photographer missed the fish, but that’s not important we got the smile!
Thanks to Jane at the Globe for allowing us to park, Ray Burton for the Admin and Tracy and Andy Francombe who came over to help with the weigh in. allowing us to the clear the bank just in case it rained and get to the Globe for a beer slightly earlier!
