Daiwa Global Celebration Event 2025.
Our young Luton Anglers and coaches have just returned from the Daiwa sponsored Global Celebration event, held on Saturday 18th October where again, the young Luton anglers did extremely well. This event, held on the Shropshire Union Canal, and headquartered at Harper Adams University is kindly sponsored by tackle giant Daiwa, who provide the prizes.
The event starts in the morning with a parade of teams carrying their national flags. The event was fished by over 240 young anglers of over 40 different nationalities, divided by age groups and made into teams of three.
The weekend was fine with no rain, but the weather had turned much colder, and there was a cold breeze blowing, making the fishing much more challenging than earlier in the year, but all the 240 odd young anglers fishing managed to catch fish and weigh in.
We went back to the hall at Harper Adams for the presentation and awards ceremonies, and found Luton Anglers had done very well, all adding good points to their respective team scores.
Joris fishing for team Lithuania had both a great team and individual result, the team coming 10th out of 35 teams and Joris getting the trophy for highest weight in the team as well as his Daiwa prize. Joris was very excited and says he cannot wait for next year’s event!
Luton cadet Leo representing France unusually struggled this time, but still really enjoyed the event adding valuable team points to his team score enabling them to secure 25th place.
Alex fished in the Young Juniors and in this category his team came 10th, while in the full Juniors, Jacks team came 15th, and Daniel and Kaden who were in the same team were placed 14th.
Daniel, who was fishing on his birthday got the trophy for the highest weight on the team together with his prize from Daiwa.
One of the highlights of the ceremony was Jack O’Brien getting recognition for being the most improved Junior fishing CRT events for 2025 and gaining his trophy. Well done, Jack, a brilliant achievement in winning what is a national award and richly deserved.
All of us really enjoyed the event, but we were told there was some very questionable singing taking place in some of the cars in the traffic jam on the M6 on the way home. Those involved know who they are.
All the Luton coaching team and Luton Angling Club are very proud of these young anglers who are a delight to help and consistently do extremely well, they out-fished many more experienced anglers from around the country this weekend.

South Lagoon at Wyboston
Kletos has made a recent comeback to the sport and he has been fishing at South Lagoon for about 6 weeks now, having some great days with his son.
He has shared some pics from a good day today, albeit solo this time.
He managed 3 Pike at 10lb 4oz, 10lb 8oz and 12lb 8oz and ended the day with a Perch bang on 2lb. Shame it wasn't the Predator Match!
He thanks the Bailiff for taking the pics of the two held Pike (10lb 8oz and 12lb 8oz). He did say to the Bailiff that he was considering a change of tactics and that's what brought the Perch later in the day.
A really interesting fact he mentioned is that it was almost 33 years to the day that he caught a former Club Junior Perch Record in 1991 with an almost identical sized Perch on the GUC (2lb 4oz 4dr) during one of the Luton Junior Matches with Pete Goode at Grove Lock.

Andrew Elliman and his brother Chris fished another two nights on South Lagoon at Wyboston last weekend. They had a good mixed bag of fish. During the day they fished for pike and at night went for carp and zander. Andrew had two mirror carp 20lb & 11lb, 4 bream around 6-7lb and Chris caught 4 carp to 14lb and a 6lb 8oz pike. They both lost two carp at the net and Andrew also had a pike drop the deadbait at the last minute. Another great session.

River Ouse
Jason Mash was back out on one of or sections of the Ouse and he said it was a tough day, the hard work was worth it as this Perch went 3lb 9oz, an absolute stunner of a fish and great photography. He added that all his predator fishing is done using single hooks and a completely crushed barb. He never uses trebles and says it has no effect on his hook up rates.

Lee Waring had a successful session on the canal Thursday evening, in a session lasting just over two hours.. Along with a couple of 'slimers', He also landed around seven decent Perch, from 8oz , a few around the 2lb mark and one a shade under 3lb, all were caught from the same swim on ledgered worms..

Nick Lynch had a good week last week during his 2 night sessions at Beckerings he had great results with numerous catches.
The first night was a short overnighter between 2 12 hour shifts at work which saw a 20lb Common and a 23lb mirror on the bank, these were caught on Shrimp + Pepper boilies.
The second night resulted in a 61lb Cat, 3 full linear mirrors at 15lb 23lb 24lb, and a common of 17lb and all were caught on Papi- Nut and Shrimp + Pepper boilies.

Wednesday Match Report - Lakeside Farm Cublington, Top Lake – 15th October 2025
This Wednesday dawned damp and overcast with no wind after a chilly night, and autumn was very much in evidence, with trees shedding their leaves in large quantities. The greens, browns and golds of autumn were certainly lying in the gutter dead! The air temperature was struggling to make 10°C and we had very high air pressure to contend with—never great for fishing.
We met at Lakeside, a venue that many of our regulars know well, to find the lake was about 18 inches down due to the recent low rainfall. It still had some colour, though some swims were carpeted in fallen leaves. When the cold, fitful wind did appear later, floating leaves were blown around—sometimes clearing a swim, only to return and cover it again—making presentation extremely difficult for some.
The twelve fishing knew we were in for a challenging day with those conditions, but some did manage to find fish. Regular Simon Foulkes fished two lines: a waggler at four rod lengths out and his pole at 12m. He introduced two large balls of groundbait laced with dead reds and hemp on the pole line from the off, then spent the first hour on the waggler, spraying reds every third cast. This produced small perch and roach and three net roach. Simon then had a look on the pole line, which produced a steady flow of small perch plus a bream around the 2lb mark. All his fish were caught on either single or double red maggot. Simon weighed in 5lb 7oz to take 1st place.
Second was Sean Leatherland, who fished his pole at 11 metres over a bed of groundbait and dead red maggot, using single red maggot on the hook. Sean had one decent bream and a lot of small perch, mainly taken in the first half of the match, finishing with 4lb 11oz for second place.
Dave Ridley took third, fishing a 4m whip with red maggots and pinkies. He caught steadily for the first half of the match, and then, like many, the bites dried up. His catch was mainly perch, but he did have a couple of nice roach in his bag, ending with 3lb 9oz.
Sam Rose started by trying a method feeder with soaked micros and groundbait mixed, and had nothing. She then switched to a maggot feeder—again, nothing. She tried the pole at 12m and had a couple of bites, but they bumped off. She went down to five sections where the shelf drops off, fishing about 3ft deep, and caught another perch and several roach. She tried letting the bait sink slowly to see if any fish were biting higher up in the water column, getting bites off the bottom only when she cupped in a small amount of the method mix and a few maggots. Red maggot was her primary hook bait. Sam weighed 1lb 4oz for 4th.
Thanks to all who muck in and help with the admin and weigh-in—we couldn’t run our Wednesday outings without you.

🎣 2025 Grand Union South Junior Championship – Saturday 10th October, Three Locks
Luton proudly hosted this year’s GUC South Junior Championship at Three Locks, welcoming 16 young anglers — nine of whom were our own Luton Juniors. The match was split into age groups: six Cadets (6–10yrs) and ten Juniors (11–16yrs), fished to CRT rules with a 3-metre restriction for the first 90 minutes.
Cadets fished for 3 hours, Juniors for 3½, and for many it was their first ever match — excitement was high! After meeting in the car park for the draw, our young anglers made their way to pegged swims on Luton Section 4 above the lock. We were delighted to welcome one Cadet from Rochdale, others from Northampton and Wellingborough, and three girls — including one representing Luton.
The morning dawned fine at around 10°C, slightly chilly after a cool night, with overcast skies and barely a breeze. The canal had good colour, though cooling slightly, and for mid-October, conditions were near perfect.
As some of our young anglers only began fishing in late summer, they received coaching support throughout the match. All caught multiple fish and thoroughly enjoyed their time on the bank — the beaming smiles in the photos say it all.
🏆 Cadet Results (6–10yrs)
🥇 Mason Connor – 3lb 6oz (mixed bag)
🥈 Dexter Peacock – 1lb 14oz
🥉 Ella Justo – 1lb 11oz
🏆 Junior Results (11–16yrs)
🥇 Jack O’Brien (Luton) – 3lb 1oz (roach)
🥈 Daniel Carr (Luton) – 1lb 13oz (roach & perch)
🥉 Luke Powell – 1lb 8oz
🎣 Special mention: Alex Ropke (Luton) with a cracking 15oz perch in his catch
After the weigh-in, we returned to the car park for the trophy and prize presentations, kindly provided by the Club and CRT. A huge thank you to John Ellis and the CRT team, all the parents for their taxi services, our Luton coaches and volunteers, and coach Sue Galloway from Northampton for helping run the event so professionally.
Next week, many of these young anglers will be heading to Shropshire for the Daiwa Celebration event — we wish them every success and hope to see them back on our waters next year!

2025 John Morris Memorial Match – Biddenham
Last Sunday 5th October the annual match in memory of former club secretary John Morris took place at Biddenham. The day dawned fine with a gentle breeze after the heavy winds of the day before. Although the wind increased and became quite gusty again by midday, the threatened rain didn’t materialise, and the day ended fine. The river at Biddenham looked in great condition with colour and gentle flow, and the trees held a lovely autumn hue—a huge contrast to last year when everything was in flood and the car park was underwater, preventing the match from being fished!
We had a super turnout of 21 booked to fish, including one of the Club’s Junior members, so the match was split into A & B sections.
A Section
Winner Richard Gibbs opted to fish the pole with a 7m whip as a backup. He fished a 2grm flat float at 11 metres with two maggots on a size 16 hook, feeding hemp and red maggot. He had a net roach first trot down and continued inching the float through the swim—challenging in the gusting wind—to take more roach, chub and perch. After a couple of hours, bites slowed, so he scaled down the hooklength and swapped to a size 18 hook with two pinkies, which brought more bites and fish until the end. Richard finished with a fine mixed net for 7lb 2oz.
Danny Worth took second, catching most of his fish at 13 metres using double red maggot over groundbait, alternating to a 6m line on worm throughout the day to end with 4lb 15oz.
Third on A was Keith Ward, fishing a swim he wasn’t keen on! Keith fished at 14.5 metres using groundbait laced with caster, hemp and dead maggot, with caster and red maggot on the hook. He took a lovely mixed bag for 4lb 11oz.
B Section
Winner Miles Tommey fished the pole at 10 metres over a bed of groundbait laced with pinkie, with big red maggot on the hook. He took a bag of mainly roach with a few small chub and perch to end with 5lb 0oz.
Second was Dave Whillock, who caught perch to 1.5lb on red maggot over chopped worm close in. He also had three roach on bread punch and a few chublets on red maggot at 11 metres for 4lb 2oz 8drm.
Third place went to Pete Smith, edged into third by just 8 dram, ending with a creditable 4lb 2oz.
A very well done should also be recorded to Junior Jack O’Brien, fresh from his terrific result in the Division 2 National last weekend where he weighed 4 kilo 200 gram, and recorded 3lb 14oz from B section.
Richard Gibbs was absolutely made up to win the match in memory of John, who is still missed by us all. The trophy was presented by Chairman Fergal O’Kane, and Richard said it’s great that the Club continues to mark his memory with this annual match, which raised £210.00 for John’s chosen charity, Groundwork.
Thanks must go to the guys who went to Biddenham on Saturday to prepare the swims, and all those who helped with the organisation and weigh-in on the day—you know who you are.

Match Report from the 5th and 6th rounds of the 2025 Sunday Series.
ROUND 5
Round 5 of the LAC Sunday Summer Series took place on the River Ouse at Lavendon on 17th August 2025.
12 anglers took part in the match which had been eagerly awaited due to the 2024 fixture having to be called off due to storms. This time the sunshine prevailed but unfortunately the fishing was tough for most.
Winner on the day was Myles Tommey on peg 6, by the outflow. Myles fished the feeder with what he said was a secret bait. It clearly worked as a large bream followed up with a few decent skimmers was enough to take an easy win with 10lb 14ozs 12drms. The picture shows Myles cradling his bream. The observant amongst you will notice Myles is a bit wet. In all the excitement to weigh in, Myles decided to 'throw himself' into the river...
Sean Leatherland continued his good form to finish 2nd with 4lb 8 ozs 8 drms from Peg 1. Sean fed pinkie and maggot over groundbait and caught mostly small roach fishing a pole at 11metres.
In third place was Chris Howard on peg 8 with 2lb. Realising the fishing was tough, Chris changed tactics and targeted the bleak. a good idea and the 3rd place was enough for a section win to keep him top of the overall standings going into Round 6.
ROUND 6
Round 6 of the 2025 Summer Sunday Series was on the Grand Union Canal at Town South.
12 Anglers turned out for this match which, for the first half, was fished in very wet conditions but finished in wonderful sunshine.
Winner on the day was Chris Howard. Chris drew end peg 12 and fish breadpunch down the track to catch bream for a winning weight of 10lb 14ozs. The win means that Chris is the Overall leader going into the final 2 rounds.
Myles Tommey followed up his win in the previous round with 2nd off peg 9 on the outfall. Fishing pole across to the overhanging tree, Myles had a mixed bag of fish for 5lb 11ozs 4 drms.
Dave Abbott was on the next peg to Myles and fishing a similar style caught 5lb 9ozs including a lovely large hybrid which gave Dave a good battle on light tackle.
NEXT ROUND......
Round 7 will be on 19th October on the River Ouse at Eaton Ford. The draw at 8.30am. £2.00 peg fee and £5.00 optional pools, fish 10am till 3pm. There are 8 matches in the Sunday Series and the best 5 section results from eight count for the final league placings (one of which must be a river match)
For anyone thinking of joining in with the friendly matches, they are open to club members and if you are joining us for the first time can we ask that you message us so we know you are coming before turning up. You will be asked to produce your Club book at first appearance, so please have it with you and you are very welcome.

Wednesday 8th October – River Nene, Ringstead
This week 13 made the trip on a dark drizzly morning to fish the Nene at Ringstead, made possible by the generosity of Wellingborough A/C. This is a lovely piece of river with good access and parking with no long walks, known for its decent fishing, particularly for roach.
After the early start from Luton, some of us met at McDonalds at Raunds for breakfast, while others opted to go straight to the venue. The drizzle cleared during breakfast and by the time we got to the venue at 7:45 it had cleared, leaving a fine day. The water temperature was measured at 14°C, and the river had flow and colour. We had one well-behaved boat pass upriver during our match.
Simon Foulkes, who took first place, set about fishing two lines at the off — a small waggler over and a 4m whip. He fed the whip line with pinches of hemp from the off and started fishing over with the waggler, feeding hemp and fishing double reds. After half an hour doing this and only a handful of small chublets and some weed problems, he decided to spend the rest of the match on the short whip line, feeding pinches of hemp every cast with walnut-sized balls of groundbait every 15–20 minutes. This managed to keep roach, rudd, perch, dace and a random net skimmer coming for the rest of the match, Simon finishing with 4lb 15oz.
Bart Bonito was plagued by weed from the off and could hardly get more than a foot of depth whilst running his float through the swim. Bart switched to using a waggler and whip on the inside and caught on hemp and maggot close in. Like many of the anglers, Bart was troubled by pike and had several of his fish taken on the way in but still finished with a creditable 4lb 14oz to take second.
Richard Gibbs arrived at his peg and was disappointed to see how shallow and clear the water was. He plumbed up with a 1.5grm float rig and found the deepest water to be four and a half feet close in. Richard fed hemp and red maggot and hooked a stamp roach first run down the nearside, which resulted in a 5-minute battle with Mr Pike and a lost hook length. After that, he continued to take small roach, chublets and perch until the next pike attack — which he won. One all! Bites were a bit spasmodic, but Richard managed to keep a few fish coming by swapping between the 1.5grm rig and 7m whip, despite four more pike attacks! Richard had two pike around 6 to 7lbs sat at the end of his keepnet for the rest of the day. He used red maggot, fluoro maggot and pinkie during the day. Richard said it was a very enjoyable day despite Mr Pike taking the honours 5–1, and he finished with 4lb 5oz to take third.
Dave Ridley took fourth, fishing with a 4m whip using pinkie and red maggots with no groundbait. He caught steadily all day, fishing off the bottom to avoid the weeds and catching bleak and chublets at 2ft deep, with perch and roach at 4ft, weighing 4lb 4oz.
Luckiest angler on the day was Dennis Hunt, who lost a pole top 2 when it fell off (don’t ask). Fortunately, instead of sinking as normal, it floated — and Terry Vickers very kindly managed to cast his waggler over it, snag it and retrieve it. Lucky or what!
Many thanks as usual to all who helped with the admin and weigh-in this week — we couldn’t manage without everyone mucking in where they can.
