Match Report 19th February 2025 River Ouse Wyboston
We had been itching to fish a river again since October when the high winds and floods, which repeated several times in subsequent weeks resulted in our river sections becoming virtually unfishable. We had been monitoring the situation and Brian Turner the Wyboston Bailiff had reported the river looked fishable had good flow and was at normal level. With the end of the river season less than a month away we were really looking forward to fishing Wyboston this week.
12 of us including a junior met on the hardstanding behind North House and the river looked cold (measured temperature 5C) but had good flow and some colour, so we were hopeful of a few fish. The morning was chilly but there wasn’t an overnight frost, and the temperature was supposed to rise during the day, but the stiff breeze after we started and the rain at lunchtime made the day feel very cold.
As we arrived at our swims one of the Local EA enforcement officers arrived and checked our rod licences (all was in order) and he wished us a good day.
We started to fish, and it became obvious soon after starting that we were in for a hard day as bites were non-existent! All the usual methods and baits were tried with no avail. Dennis Hunt had a bite with 30 mins to go using a feeder of liquidised bread and flake as bait and when the tip went around! He struck and felt a fish, which felt like a small chub, and then it surfaced, and he netted a small Pike, which didn’t count!
Richard Darbon discovered on arriving at his peg he only had his light feeder rod as the bigger one had been left in the garage, but undeterred he set up with a maggot feeder which would hold on the inside edge of the flow. He had been casting regularly to the same spot all day and with about 30 mins to go he hooked a roach. He carried on and as the whistle blew he had another bite, yelling ‘Fish On’ he had hooked a fish which gave a good account of itself on his light gear, but he managed to land a decent Chub of 3lb to take the win, finishing with 3lb 8 oz.
Thanks to all who assisted yesterday, however the weighing team had a day off!

Winter League - Round 3
The third round of the LAC Winter League was staged on Sunday on the Grand Union Canal at Town South. With another cold night hopes were that it would not fish hard but that once again proved to not be the case with only half of the 16 anglers in attendance catching. However, there were at least a couple of quality fish caught.
This weeks winner was Danny Worth. Having drawn peg 15 in the unfancied area opposite the houses, Danny decided to keep things simple and fished one line all day feeding liquidised bread at 5m metres with worm as hook bait. Danny's patience paid off with one decent bream and a skimmer for the top weight of 2lb 12ozs 8drms.
2nd on the day went to inform Simon Foulkes who backed up his previous round 2nd with the same result. Drawn on peg 6 opposite the reeds and flats, Simon decided to fish 2 lines - 1 tight to the far bank reeds and the other at 10m. He started tight over alternating between breadpunch and pinkie which resulted in a small roach. A change to his 10m line with chopped worm and caster resulted in a decent skimmer. But those two fish were enough to secure 2nd with 2lb 12drms
In 3rd was another inform angler in Sean Leatherland. Sean drew peg 10 next to white bridge and fished at 9m with pinkie over breadcrumb. This resulted in a large hybrid backed up with a few smaller fish on squat and pinkie for his 1lb 12ozs 8drm
Round 4 will be on 2nd March on the GUC at Three Locks (venue may change and will be notified if it does). The draw at 8.30am. £2.00 peg fee and £5.00 optional pools, fish 10am till 3pm.
For anyone thinking of joining in with the friendly matches, they are open to club members and if you are joining us for the first time can we ask that you message us so we know you are coming before turning up. You will be asked to produce your Club book at first appearance, so please have it with you and you are very welcome.

Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Week Ending 16th February 2025

Here is the Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area for the Week Ending 16th February 2025.

Match Report 12th February 2025 GUC Town North
It was back on the GUC at Town North this week with fingers crossed the Canal would fish better than the previous week at Town South. 14 anglers attended and as we met at the venue the colour of the Canal (milky tea as can be seen in the pictures) wasn’t encouraging, but you never know.
The previous night had been cold, but we hadn’t had a frost, and the day started overcast with no wind and an initial temperature of 3C, which seemed to get warmer towards midday and tail off again towards the late afternoon. The water temperature was measured at 5C.
After the draw we made our way along the towpath passing numbers of moored boats that had made getting the required 14 pegs this week a challenge,we set up our gear and waited for the off
When the whistle went at 10, Sean Leatherland fed a small ball of liquidised bread, went in with a piece of punch on the hook, the float buried and he had his first fish in the net within 5 mins of starting, which certainly boosted everyone’s confidence! We had two boat movements during the day which double locked towards the Globe causing minimal disturbance about midday. While the day wasn’t prolific the Canal certainly fished better than the week before and everyone caught, the match being a tight affair. The fish when caught felt like blocks of ice!
Our Winner was Steve Lathwell who had a slow start but got the win with 4lb dead. A pound chub, a rare fish in any Luton Canal section made the difference putting Steve top of the frame this week.
Dennis Hunt started by feeding liquidised bread at 5 Metres with punch on the hook and had a bite soon after starting but unfortunately lost the fish. However, going back in Dennis had put another couple of skimmers in the net before the swim slowed, but changing bait and feeding squatt with pinkie on the hook produced another. The swim then slowed and Dennis went out to 12 Metres against the far side vegetation on worm and continued to alternate taking odd fish for the rest of the match ending with 3lb 4oz.
Fishing at 8 metres feeding a little groundbait with pinkie and fishing a single maggot on a 22 hook Richard Darbon weighed 2lb 14oz to take third Place.
Dave Ridley fished a 3m whip for the first hour and a half, catching one skimmer and two small roach, using pinkies & a small amount of groundbait. He then swapped to a small maggot feeder with double pinkie tight to the far bank but caught nothing. He went back to the whip after 45 minutes & caught steady for the rest of the match (mainly skimmers & roach) to end with 2lb 12oz for fourth.

Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Week Ending 9th February 2025

Here is this week's news information and catch reports from Luton Angling Club - Week ending 9th February 2025.

The John Morris Memorial Match
With regret, and after careful consideration it was decided that that we would cancel the match due to be held on Sunday 9th at Biddenham, after the 8mm of rain at the end of the week and already saturated ground conditions, and having been and assessed the conditions at the venue, as we suspected the car park and paths are extremely boggy and many of the platforms covered in slippery silt. In addition to this the river conditions will be less than favourable after all the rain.

Match Report 5th February 2025 GUC Town South
This week was our first match of 2025, and 17 of us were all eagerly wanting to get back on the bank again. This week, we welcomed new recruit Pete Mills, joining us for the first time after some time away from the area. We met by the white bridge for our peg draw on a cold morning with frost on the ground, which soon vanished as the day warmed, and it turned out fine and warm, with little wind. The canal looked cold but had colour, and we set off to our pegs with high expectations.
The lovely warm day was about the only thing of note, however we soon found out the Canal was in dour mood and bites were at a premium, with most of those present failing to attract a bite all day despite trying a range of baits.
Colin Holmes who won said it was his third canal match of 2025, and he was still waiting for his first bite, so this time he started off by potting in just a few pinkies and a small pinch of bread down the middle. Hour in and still not a bite!
He then moved out to the reeds on far bank at 11 meters again feeding very lightly, and still not a bite! He was thinking not another blank I need a miracle, and it turned up in the form of a kingfisher. The bird landed on a bush on the far bank just to his right, and as he watched it dived into the shallow water and then returned to it’s branch with a small fish and ate it, then flew off. Thinking he knows something, Colin added more pole sections to fish at 14 meters and caught a small fish. After this miracle, he followed up with a further 10 fish to end on 11 fish for 3 ounces. Thank you, Mr Kingfisher.
We have no boats moving at the moment due to stoppages at Grove Lock and Chelmscote bridge, let’s hope these will be removed soon and the boats begin to move again, and the weather warms, and Canal comes round and starts to fish again!

Litter at our Day Ticket Venues
All this rubbish (including bags of human excrement) has been cleared from just one swim at South Lagoon by bailiff Andy. THIS IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE, and we'll be stepping up patrols and keeping a close eye on who is fishing each swim. All litter MUST be taken with you. Anyone caught leaving litter will be banned from fishing the venue in the future. If you think this is acceptable, then find somewhere else to fish as you aren't welcome at our waters.
Just because it's a day ticket water doesn't mean club rules do not apply to you. If you are identified leaving litter you will no longer be welcome to fish any Luton Angling Club water. There is absolutely no excuse for leaving litter. Please respect the environment. If this continues it could see the water becoming a members only water!

Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Week Ending 2nd February 2025

Here is the latest news information and catch report round up from Luton Angling Club for the week ending 2nd February 2025.

We start this weeks report with some sad news,  the club found out this week that life member Stef Roseblade has passed away. Stef was the bailiff at Eaton Ford for many years and also at Wyboston when the club first ran the fishing there.
He was a constant work party stalwart and always supported the club in every way possible. He was still living in Australia at the time of his passing and his family have told us he'll be having a private cremation and then his ashes will be scattered here in the UK.
The club sends its condolences to his friends and family.

Venue Catch Report
One catch report this week from Jason Mash, He caught a Pike on a float fished dead bait on a wire trace and a large single hook, he allowed the bait to drift around on the undertow.
