Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Easter Bank Holiday 21st April.

Here is this week's news information and catch report round up from Luton Angling Club which includes this bank holiday weekend.The fish in our waters are certainly starting to wake up and we are starting to receive numerous catch reports from our members.

Membership Renewal Reminder

Another reminder to any existing members that have not yet renewed their club membership - You only have until the end of April to guarantee your place for the 2025/26 membership year (1st June 2025 - 31st May 2026)

Existing members are only given priority to renew up until 1st May 2025. On the morning of 1st May 2025 any memberships that have not been renewed will be offered to NEW MEMBERS. We expect these to sell out very quickly so please make sure you renew before the end of April to avoid missing out.

Brett Collins had a superb Mirror from North House Lake during his 24hr session at the weekend.

Warren Griffiths had a 4hr morning trip to North House Lake, which produced 2 mirror carp 18lb 5oz and 16lb 2oz. I think this is possibly number 11 and number 24 from the 2021 stocking.

South Lagoon - Wyboston

The lagoon continues to fish very well with lots of anglers reporting good catches. Amer Jawad had a nice late afternoon session and had plenty of bites.

Wieslaw Lewandowski had a cracking 3lb 5oz Perch and he also had a nice Roach and a Carp.

Rod Gladston had a Mirror carp. I believe it's the first carp he's had from the Lagoon. A lot of the flood escapees seem to have made the Lagoon their home as we've never had so many carp reported from there.

Matt Mardlin also caught his first ever South Lagoon carp.

Bill Ridgway fished on Peg 4 at South Lagoon on Monday 14th. He had one nice Bream about 6lb and lost a good carp at the net .He was fishing a Size 14 to 4lb hook length with 3 reds.

Ben Waymont had 4 mirrors the biggest being 26.8lb and the others at 21lb, 20lb and one smaller around 10lb.

Carlo Borromeo had somewhat of a red letter day 24hr session, catching 8 carp.

Nick Lynch had a Catfish at 37lb and an 18lb Mirror. Both were caught on Mamba Baits Shrimp + Pepper.

Prior to his Friday night session on North House, Brett Collins did Thursday night at the reservoir and had a Common and a Mirror.

Grand Union Canal

One of our young anglers, Jack O Brien went to the three locks for a few hours on Monday and on the first chuck had a nice bream that fought way too hard on his light elastic. He had it on a single pinkie over a ball of groundbait. He only had one other perch on this line before the swim died, then he tried another line of chopped worm and casters near a boat. He had some bites but no fish. He commented that Three locks is tough fishing at the moment, with bites being available but hard to produce.

Lee Waring had a short 2 hour session on the Grand Union yesterday he had some nice Bream and a 2lb+ Perch. Interestingly, the Perch was missing it's stripes.

Match Report - Wednesday 16th April 2025

This week’s midweek match took place away from home waters. We descended upon Twin Lakes Fishery at Bedford where 13 anglers turned up, a number that was boosted to 15 by the very welcome addition of 2 members from our Junior ranks in the shape of Jack o’ Brien and Daniel Carr. On the debit side we had lost 4 anglers to late illness. We all wish all of them a speedy recovery.

It is most encouraging to see young blood amongst us and even more so to see them have some success, as the weigh sheet set out below demonstrates.

We fished Jack’s Lake at the venue (just a coincidence in names – Nothing to do with Jack O Brien!!) which was at a good level despite the prolonged dry spell and carried a fair amount of colour. However, we did face a strong wind blowing down the Lake which meant that the anglers on the high and low numbered pegs were face on into it. As the weigh sheet below shows, sport was somewhat patchy.

Steve Lathwell was the clear winner on the day with 60lbs 2oz. Steve opted to use a Method Feeder rig with micro pellets as groundbait and 8mm pellet as hook bait. He fished against the island opposite his peg and his net(s) contained mainly Carp with the occasional Tench. He alternated with random trips into the margins when sport became slower.

In second place with 47lbs 10oz was Mark Sessions who chose a maggot feeder to the end of the island, feeding 2mm pellets and maggot linked to a size 14 hook holding 4 maggots as bait.

In third place was Sean Leatherland with 43lbs 12oz caught mainly on a pole to 13m using maggot as bait.

In 4th place was Colin Holmes with 23lbs 8oz He also fished a method feeder initially but changed to a lifter bite detector due to difficulty with the gusty wind effecting the rod tip which in turn dislodged the feeder. Following this change of approach Colin began to catch with a 6mm banded pellet.

After that, the remaining anglers struggled to find any fish consistently, which the weights set out below testify to. However, nobody blanked on the day and despite the wind the weather remained dry.

Thank you to Ray Burton for his efforts to get the match under way by sorting out the financial side and the draw. Also, thanks to Richard Darbon for time keeping, (although he didn’t call time until he had hooked his last fish!!!). Finally thank you again to the stalwart Tracey who turned up, as usual, got Sean’s tackle to his peg and then returned later in the day to assist with and to scribe up the weigh in.

Overall, it was quite a hard day fishing wise but at least the weather was kind to us. Well done to those who managed to find some decent fish and to the rest for making it a pleasant day all round.

Parking arrangements will be that the CRT carpark will be available to the less mobile members as usual.

Otherwise, please park considerately on the adjoining housing estate, particularly remembering that it is bin collection day and the Council Refuse Cart drivers are not renowned for their judgement of narrow widths!!

South Lagoon Wyboston

Andy Smith sent pictures of two carp he had from South Lagoon yesterday while feeder fishing. He also had a few good bream and small roach, most people fishing had carp on the feeder. There seems to be more carp coming out than bream at the moment and the place fishing well.

Warren Griffiths had two carp on a quick morning visit, Weights were 27lb 7oz, and 18lb 9oz. He was on his way out from a walk round, when he spotted the smaller of the 2 feeding, so went back in with the essentials.

Beckerings Reservoir

Martin Scholes did 24hrs on Beckering, he had his first fish just before 9pm which was a 12lb 11oz Common. Then it was quiet for the rest of the night, just before 10am the next morning he had another Common at 12lb 12oz. Then just as he was packing up for the day he had a Mirror at 16lb 4oz there is no picture of the 12lb 12oz Common, The first fish was caught using an 18mm essential cell wafter and the other two were caught on essential cell 15mm boilies.

Jason Mash had a cracking Mirror which was the best one of the two carp he had while fishing on Tuesday, He was back at the reservoir on Friday and it was a struggle as nothing was coming off the bottom. He managed a nice common off the top, but with ducks nailing everything he put out , it wasn’t at all easy.

Luton AC 2025/26 Coaching Program

Our summer coaching program is now in full swing with our qualified and DBS checked coaches delivering CRT ‘Lets Fish and Club coaching sessions. We look forward to a busy summer and for our talented young anglers to again do well in the CRT Regional events and the Daiwa sponsored CRT National Celebration held in Shropshire in September. Many of our Cadets and Juniors can’t wait to attend again and are already booked on.

The first public ‘Lets Fish’ event of the year was held on Town South last Saturday 5th April and was well attended with all who came catching fish, generating much excitement, with several of those who came indicating they would like to join the Club. We have a further ‘Lets Fish’ introductory session being held on the Canal at Town South this Tuesday 15th April.

This Saturday afternoon we ran an extremely successful club coaching session where our young anglers, who couldn’t wait to get back on the bank again demonstrated they hadn’t lost any of their skills over the winter and demonstrated they had learnt some new ones at our winter classroom sessions, all showing good technique and catching fish. The best fish today was taken by Alex, who bagged a very nice perch that was over 2Lbs.

We don't usually advertise anything social media pages, however this is a little different and we have a couple of books to give away via a draw.... For years now, one of our long term members Christopher Willis has harboured a secret wish to write a book documenting some of the many eventful days and experiences that have occurred throughout his angling life. Due to work commitments and fishing however, he never really had the time to devote to it. But recently he found himself in a situation, through unforeseen circumstances, whereby he had a lot of time at his disposal, and it seemed the perfect time to fulfil his wish. When it came to actually sit down and begin writing he found himself a bit stumped as to where to start. He had such a multitude of memories, many of which lacked clarity. Now and then a photo, or an old piece of tackle from the early days brought a day or a fish, long since forgotten into sharp focus, but for the most part much of it was indistinct. Most of the catches, days and friends merged into one huge memory without detail. But some did retain clarity, probably because they've meant so much to him, coupled with their frequent inclusion in fishing conversations with angling friends.

When Chris began writing this book his intentions were that he would write his experiences in sequence, as they occurred throughout his angling life, but he soon realised it was hopeless.

As he recounted and wrote about one event, another, that occurred earlier or later in his fishing life would come to mind. But then he thought, does it really matter?

So, in the end the book is mostly a collection of his personal fishing stories, and some opinions that he wanted to share. It certainly is not a book about how to catch - that has been done a thousand times - I am told that some of the recollections are based on Luton and Vauxhall river stretches though the real venue names aren't mentioned.

Match Report Wednesday 9th April 2025 Beckerings Reservoir

This week’s match was at Beckerings Reservoir, and we had been looking forward to it for some time. We had a good turnout of 19 anglers, including one of the Luton Juniors fishing, with another couple unfortunately having to withdraw at the last minute due to sickness, and we were all hoping that with the recent warmer temperatures the fish would show.

Wednesday dawned a very cold morning with mist, and as we arrived you couldn’t see the far end of the lake it was so thick. The mist lifted but the heavy overcast remained all day with only occasional sunshine to warm us up.

A very cold brisk North Easterly wind was blowing across the reservoir making it feel colder still for those on the Steppingley bank facing into the wind.

Our Werthers Willie Wonka style Golden ticket competition continued, and this week only one ‘Golden Ticket’ was drawn, the other was left in the tin so three prizes are up for grabs next week!

Our match winner this week was Amer Jawad, who started on the slider at 28m for a few small fish and a decent skimmer. A cormorant dived down on his slider line and that was that. No more bites ensued. He then moved out to 45m on the feeder with worm on the hook and sat there for about an hour until he picked up his first bream of around 8lb. Another bream followed 30 minutes later, then the cormorant returned and seemed to unsettle the fish. He managed one more late bream on the feeder to end with 18lb 6oz and the win.

Second place was taken by Andy Francome who feed 4 balls groundbait laced with dead maggots at six metres out. Andy was fishing waggler with 2 maggots on a 16 hook, loose feeding maggots every cast tom end with 5lb 4oz.

Third was taken by Bart Bonito who ran Andy pretty close, ending 4oz behind with 5lb 0oz.

Joint 4th were Richard Darbon and the in form Dave Ridley who both had 4lb 8oz. Richard Darbon after 2 hours blanking on a feeder setup decided to change tactics and set up his whip. Richard fished at 7m, alternating between single maggot and double pinkie feeding half a dozen maggots every cast. Dave Ridley opted to fish a waggler at 12-16m using red maggots and pinkies. He caught some decent roach, of which one must have been well over 1 lb.

After that the weights rapidly tailed away on what really was a disappointing day.

South Lagoon - Wyboston

South Lagoon continues to fish very well. Brian Turner just got back from a 48 hour session,he finally had a very long overdue Common Carp that went 16lb 10z which he was absolutely over the moon with as it's his first Lagoon carp. As well as the carp he had a fantastic time catching 9 bream, one was 12lb 6oz an absolute hog of a bream which would be a new club record however sadly he didn't take any photos of it so cant make a claim. The other 8 Bream were roughly 8-9lb each The other bailiff Barry said it might be good to get some pictures for social media as not everyone is after the carp, so he took a couple of the last 2 Bream.

Andy Smith also had success on the lagoon, he caughty five carp from 4lb to 8lb and he also lost 3 better ones. He also had Bream to 5lb and lots of skimmers and Roach for around 45lb he commented that the lake is fishing very well.

Paul Webb had a lovely 3lb 3oz Perch. He also caught 2 small carp and a jack pike. All were caught in the margins using lob worms.

Martin Scholes sent in pictures of a few fish from two recent 24hr sessions on Beckerings. On the the first session on 23rd of March he had a 15lb 14oz Mirror and on the second on the 31st a 13lb 5oz Common and a 20lb 2oz Mirror all on essential cell boilies

Beckerings Closure 09/04/25 - 07:00hrs - 16:30hrs

The Wednesday group are fishing their match on Beckerings this coming Wednesday. There are 20+ members taking part so the decision has been made to close the reservoir for the duration of the match. Anyone fishing Tuesday night must vacate the venue by 7am. Anyone wishing to fish Wednesday evening or Wednesday night should not arrive until at least 4:30pm as the car park will be busy until then.

Remember the Wednesday match fixtures are open to all club members and any member that wishes to take part in future Wednesday matches should contact the match secretary Dennis Hunt via the contact form on the club website.

Beckerings Maintenance

The Beckerings bailiffs will be carrying out some strimming, mowing and general tidying up during next week (probably on Tuesday). There will be some noise and disruption around the pegs while this is carried out - Please co-operate with the bailiffs... They put in lots of hard work keeping the venues in good order and it's very frustrating when they are given abuse or negative comments by those fishing about the noise and disruption. We try and minimise full venue closures and prefer to safely work around anyone fishing.

Grand Union Canal Three Locks

This week’s match took place at the Three Locks We had a brilliant turnout of 23 anglers booked, hoping that with the recent warmer temperatures, the fish would show.

With 11 anglers pegged below and 12 above the flight, the match was split for pools this week. The canal was at a good level and carried a fair amount of colour, and temperature was measured at 13C, which reinforced the grounds for optimism. However, again, the fish thought otherwise, and fish were scarce for most, with several dry nets and known banker swims failing to produce on the day.

The temperature at the draw was 9 C, rising to 21 C on the warmest day so far this year.

The fame of our Werthers sweet distribution at the draw has obviously spread and Werthers very kindly gave us some small gifts to distribute, so we are holding a Willie Wonka style Golden ticket competition for these at the next few matches. Today's Werther’s original golden ticket winners were Dudley Frankland and Simon Faukes. Well done! The golden ticket competition continues next week.

The guys pegged above the locks had a considerable amount of surface scum on the canal to deal with, which drifted around all day, and the weights in this section were very poor. The section was won by Sean Leatherland, who managed to weigh 3lb 14oz. Second was Barry Roper with 2lb 9oz, and third was Tim Watts with 1lb 2oz. In fourth place was Chris Howard, who managed to fish through the scum for a 1lb 1oz, a commendable result in the circumstances.

Malcolm Ogden caught a small Pike, which we initially thought was an Eel until it was in the net. Tony Hickmott never caught until he removed his keepnet from the water to dry, then caught his first fish immediately!

Below the lock Syd Wilson managed 13lb 4oz, Syd caught a skimmer at 5 Meters on bread punch early on and when this swim failed to produce more he alternated between 11 and 13 metres catching bream using pinkie and maggots over groundbait.

Second place was taken by Dave Ridley, who fished single red maggot over groundbait on a 4m whip. Most of Dave’s weight was from 4 decent bream, totalling 11lb, caught before the boats and locks started to have an impact.

Third was Steve Lathwell, who weighed in a creditable 5lb 8oz

Thank you to Barry Roper, Colin Holmes, and Simon for the pegging thank you to Tony Hickmott for the Werthers, Richard Gibbs for organising the financial side, and all those who helped with the weighing in.

Overall, it was another hard day’s fishing, but at least the weather was kind to us, and those in the sunshine were nice and warm. Well done to those who managed to find some decent fish and framed and to the rest for making it a very pleasant day out.

Luton AC Winter League - Final Result

Sunday 23rd March saw the final round of the LAC Winter League 2025 staged on the GUC at The Globe. Thanks as always go to the Globe Pub for their continued kindness in allowing us to use their car park on match days and for the warm welcome we alway receive when we arrive for post match beers.

With Pete Smith leading the overall standings going into the last round and needing to only catch to secure the league title, all eyes were focused on who might win the converted Corkscrew and Screw Top Bottle of Wine for the lowest points score (or as we prefer to call it the - "Top Bottom Place").

A lovely dry and warm day greeted the 15 anglers who turned out for the last round and for the first time this winter league - every angler caught. The pegging for the match ran from just along from the Globe Pub and back to Leighton Lock. Thanks to Bart Bonito and Dave Abbot for pegging out.

This was a close match with less than 3ozs separating the top three. Winner on the day was Richard Darbon. Drawn on peg 2 Richard opposite the sewage works, Richard started fishing bread punch on the pole and within a few minutes had a huge bream of 4lb 14ozs in the net caught. Although bites became hard to come by after that, Richard alternated lines to catch odd fish to end up with a weight of 5lb 15ozs.

The old analogy of a cigarette paper not being able to separate 1st and 2nd place was very apt as Dave Whillock came 2nd with 5lb 14ozs 8drms. Drawn on peg 1, Dave caught a couple of decent skimmers and backed that up with a nice net of smaller roach and skimmers. Unfortunately for Dave, he pulled out of a couple of decent fish that on another day would have proved to be winners.

In third place was Bart Bonito on peg 15 at the other end of the section. Although he had no sizeable fish, Bart maintained a run of catching hand sized skimmers throughout the match to weigh in a lovely net of fish for 5lb 12 ozs 4 drms.

With the match over, we all retreated to the Globe Pub where over a couple of beers the tales of how each caught were relayed while the final league standings were calculated.

Thankfully for Pete Smith, he caught fish to ensure he took the league title for 2025 with 20 points. With the fishing being so tough during the whole league, Pete deserves major credit for catching in 4 out of the 5 rounds. 2nd place went to Dudley Frankland who's section win and two 2nd place sections was enough to get 16 points and separate him from Sean Leatherland and Tim Watts who tied for 3rd place on 14 league points. However, with Sean having the higher overall match points he took 3rd place overall.

But almost as important was the "Top Bottom Place " which got as big a cheer as the league winner and went to Keith Ward.

It was great to welcome last years winner Ian Orbell to award the trophies. No doubt he'll be back next year to try to regain it and thanks to everyone who took part in this years Winter League and to all who helped out with organisation and weighing in.

The 2025/26 Sunday Series will start on Sunday April 27th on the GUC with venue to be confirmed. The draw at 8.30am. £2.00 peg fee and £5.00 optional pools, fish 10am till 3pm.

For anyone thinking of joining in with the friendly matches, they are open to club members and if you are joining us for the first time can we ask that you message us so we know you are coming before turning up. You will be asked to produce your Club book at first appearance, so please have it with you and you are very welcome.
