Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Covering 11th - 24th July 2022

Here is the latest news and catch reports from Luton Angling Club. This report covers the last 2 weeks as I was short on time last weekend due to being away so was unable to get the report written.

Wyboston South Lagoon Swim Refurbishment Project
Works to improve the 25 swims around the South Lagoon begin this week (w/c 25th July) starting with some tree works. We expect the project to take a minimum of 2 weeks. The lake will remain open however swims will be closed off as and when necessary to facilitate the work. This work is made possible by an EA FIP grant with match funding by the club and represents a considerable investment in this water to improve the swims for our members and day ticket anglers.

There will obviously be some disturbance and disruption during the work. Members and Day Ticket Anglers must follow instructions on signage or from the on site bailiffs and contractors. We'll try and close off swims in advance but please be prepared to move if asked.
The end result will be much improved and safer access to the swims around the lagoon.
We will post progress updates or any changes to this information regularly throughout the project.

Keepnet Restrictions/Water Closures
A temporary keep net ban was put in to place this week due to the extreme temperatures. This is to protect fish and will be lifted once temperatures have fallen. Turnford have temporarily closed the Slipe Lane Pits as water levels are dangerously low on Railway Pit There is an algal bloom on Lea Pit and the fish in Boot Pit are very lethargic and stressed. We will update the facebook page once they re-open.

It's been in the mid to high twenties again today (Sunday). So we ask all members to carefully consider their actions while fishing in the hot weather particularly around quantities of bait being used and your actions if you catch a fish, keep it wet (unhook in the net in the water if possible)and do not spend too much time photographing etc and ensure a fish has recovered before release. We also recommend you do not fish for certain species such as Pike and Barbel during the hot weather as these are much more susceptible during hot weather.

If you see signs of numbers of fish dying or in distress 0800 80 70 60 is the number for the Environment Agency Incident Hotline.

River Ouse Wyboston
Nobby Clark fished at Wyboston on the 20th and it wasn't easy going , There was a nice breeze which was the best bit of the day. It took him a couple of hours to get the fish feeding. He was with his mate Geoff who fished the tip and had skimmers a nice perch and a few small roach on maggot, worm and caster
Nobby fished a 4 metre whip with hemp to start with, and was catching 2 and 3oz roach then 2 to 3 hours in tried the trusty old tares and started catching the better roach.
Due to the keepnet restrictions he couldn’t take a photo of all the better fish of which he had at least a dozen.
It was definitely a good move to fish close in as lots of weed and rubbish was passing through and very slowly due to the lack of flow ,
An enjoyable few hours with good company and he cannot wait for the heavy rain they say we are going to get as he thinks the rivers really do need it.

River Ouse at Wyboston
On Friday 22nd he was back at Wyboston and arrived at about 3.30 In two minds to fish or just do a bit of watercraft. After a nose about he discovered he was the only one on the river. it was raining when he parked in the second lay-by up the lane past the North House Lake car park but he decided to have a go. There was a little bit more flow than when he visited two days before but not a major change. He got in a swim he had fished several times before and set up the whip with a 6 mtr rig with a 2grm float. The wind had got up in the time he spent setting up and pinging baits. The wind was from the North so against the flow which made presentation a bit more awkward, nevertheless he got over that as he always does and on the first put in he hooked a nice roach but disaster struck as he reached for the landing net - It shook its head and was gone and a 1.2lb hook length done, not a great start ..
He didn’t lose another though and ended up catching lots of small roach and about a dozen better quality roach. The pike were very active as per usual. In all he fished for about 3 hrs and then called it a day …

Luton AC Centenary Match 17th July 2022
The last match before the temporary keepnet ban came into play due to extreme hot weather took place on the 17th July.
With the weather being very hot, large weights were not expected by the eight anglers who fished the match.
Pegging was a pain due to extra boats mooring up since Friday, but we managed to get everybody some needed shade.
First on the day was Phil Speakman with 8lb 9oz. A mixed net of Roach, Perch, and Skimmers.
Second, and so close was Steve Lathwell with 8lb 6oz.
Third, and just out of the money was Lawrence Breach with 7lb 6oz
The other section winner was Myles Tommey with 3lb 14oz
£50.00 was raised for the Luton AC coaching team which will be used for bait and equipment and supporting the coaches to bring new anglers into the sport.

Match Report, Wednesday 20th July The Globe
After the high temperatures of recent days, the Wednesday group met knowing that due to the current keepnet restrictions put in place by the club they couldn’t hold the match as normal, so the 11 anglers fishing decided to forgo the usual format and have a different day by limiting themselves to Float only, short whips or running line and just pleasure fish, counting the number of fish caught for a bit of fun.
They also chose to modify the hours fished because of the forecast rain with the possibility of thunderstorms so they finished at 2-30pm allowing time to get packed away and back to the pub for a drink before the rain arrived!
All the anglers enjoyed the day in cooler (but still warm) temperatures with numbers of good fish being taken along the length. Steve Lathwell triumphed taking the most fish at over 60, run close by Richard Gibbs at 58. Richard however had a much larger weight estimated to exceed 20lb including some nice bream and hybrids while Steve’s bag was made up of smaller fish and estimated at 7-8 lb. both anglers preferred bait being Pinkies.
After fishing the group retired to the Globe for a drink, a debrief and some general banter, a great end to the day. Many thanks to the Globe for allowing the group to use their car park this week, its much appreciated, they do always ask before they park as they don’t want to abuse the hospitality.
Next Wednesday assuming the current keepnet ban will be lifted to allow the usual match to take place the group will fish Biddenham, so it will be members only, Draw at 8.30 fish, 10.30 till 3.30 with £1.00 Luton peg fee and £5.00 optional pools,
