Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Week ending 17th December 2023

Here is all of the news, information and catch reports from Luton Angling Club for the week ending Sunday 17th December 2023.

It has been another wet week so a similar story to last week and few reports due to miserable weather and river levels very high and fast flowing. The river at Lavendon was over the banks in the week with a foot of water in the fields however the levels are now slowly getting back to normal. Hopefully the weather will dry up as I know a lot of you must be itching to get out on the rivers.

Beckerings Reservoir
Max Beresford had the first carp of his winter campaign it was a Common which weighed 21lb 3oz and it was caught on DNA baits SLK during a 24hr session at the reservoir.

The bailiffs reported another common of over 20lb being caught by another member doing a 24hr session. A few small Roach, Skimmers and Perch are also being reported.

South Lagoon
The bailiffs informed me a Pike of around 16lb was caught from Peg 25 on Saturday.

Match Report 13th December
The Wednesday match group can always be relied on to send in some information to bulk out the weekly report, This week they fished at Three Locks (Section 4 Upper) and sent in their usual and detailed match report. Next week will be their last match of the year and then the group will take a break until the first match of 2024 which will be on 31st January. Here is this weeks report....
"This week, we left home on a dark, rainy Wednesday morning for our journey to Three Locks, which was made more difficult by the closure of the motorway which put additional traffic onto many local roads. There was no spectacular sunrise this week as twelve of us met for the draw for our penultimate match of the year, just a very damp drizzle!
We did have a further heavy shower just after midday, which meant we all got very wet again before going home.
The morning air temperature was hovering at around 6C, but a stiff breeze and the damp conditions made it feel much colder than last week. The canal was well coloured after the recent rain, and as expected the water chilly, with fish feeling very cold.
We had two boats pass through slowly in alternate directions around midday, which many thought improved the fishing as it picked up again after the boats passed.
The match, especially in the middle orders was a tight affair this week and was dominated by the roach, with the bream and skimmer failing to show in numbers, with 10 oz separating four places.
In form Tim Watts took the honours, Tim didn’t draw a known swim, but attacked the swim from the off hoping for the bream to show. The tactics paid off and he hooked a decent bream early on, but then struggled for the next 3 hour, only taking micro perch. After the boats went through the swim seemed to wake up, especially for the roach as Tim started to take blade roach on pinkie, which gradually increased in size. With the roach now feeding, Tim switched to concentrate on these and had 55 for around 3lb to go with his bream, ending with a creditable 5lb 8oz.
Second place was taken by Andy Frankum who chose to fish two swims, one at 4 and one at 10 metres using pinkies over groundbait to end with 4lb 4oz of roach.
Sean Leatherland bagged third, his catch again dominated by roach to end with 3lb 11oz. Sean found his fish at 13 metres. Sean caught his fish on caster, loose feeding additional caster over the top.
The next few weights were very close, Simon Faulks and Dennis Hunt separated by 8 drms. Dennis had fished punch over toasted crumb to take 66 roach for his catch.
Many thanks to all those who helped yesterday Ray for pegging, Dudley on the Admin and Tracy for doing the weigh in with Ray Burton.
Next week we have our Christmas end of year celebration match at the Globe to look forward to, and we will fish shortened hours from 10 till 2, draw as usual at 8.30 in the car park.

Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Week ending 10th December 2023

Here is all of the news, information and catch reports from Luton Angling Club for the week ending Sunday 10th December 2023.

Very few reports again this week. Due to recent and persistent rain, the River sections are all high and pushing through with the bailiffs reporting that the water up over the swims on the South Lagoon by the end of the week. River levels are falling, but with more rain forecast on Tuesday and the ground already very saturated there are EA Flood Alerts in place for the River Great Ouse.

No catch reports sent in by members this week however looking at the bailiff reports, Anglers are catching the Roach at Beckerings some of which were around the 1lb mark.

The five members of the Wednesday match group really struggled with no fish being caught during their match however they still took the time to provide a nice report on the days events as they always do.

Match Report 6th December 2023 South Lagoon
The Wednesday boys don’t seem to be having a lot of luck fishing our river sections this year, having had to use alternative venues on quite a few occasions. This week we were going to fish the River at Wyboston, but due to the recent heavy rain the river wasn’t fishable, so we transferred to our reserve Venue South Lagoon.
Many of us had left home after a severe overnight frost, scraping ice from our cars at -2C. By the time we arrived at South Lagoon the temperature had risen to a heady 0C and we were treated to a spectacular sunrise. The lake was free of ice, ripple free, and there was little wind, a nice clear day that was warm in the sunshine with the temperature continuing to rise until midday peaking at 4C, before falling rapidly again as the sun began to set.
The five fishing were optimistic and tried a multitude of methods, Feeder, Waggler and Pole, using Pinkie, Maggot, Caster, Worm and more besides as bait, but all unfortunately to no avail, no bites being detected by anyone during the match.
Richard Darbon says he saw fish roll in his swim 15 mins after the whistle, but this may of course have been a flight of fancy.
As there were no fish to weigh, this was of the quickest weigh in ever, and we were on our way home again as the temperatures plummeted.
Better luck to everyone next week, we enjoyed the day, and it didn’t rain.
Hopefully we'll do better next time.

Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Week ending 3rd December 2023

Here is all of the news, information and catch reports from Luton Angling Club for the week ending Sunday 3rd December 2023.

A slow week for reports this week, with very little to report, probably due in part to the sudden cold snap, which came with very sharp overnight frosts.

Beckerings Reservoir
Darren Savage took this great scenic shot of Beckerings earlier in the week, although catching a fish would have been a bonus.

The bailiffs report that small Roach and Perch are being caught and a member had a few Bream during a night session.

Match Report Wednesday 29th November 2023 Town North GUC.
Thanks to Terry Vickers for writing this week’s match report as Dennis, Richard and Adrian, who usually write it were not present at the match this week due to other commitments.
This week’s Wednesday match took place on the Town North Stretch of the GUC in Leighton Buzzard. 15 intrepid anglers, turned up, probably more in hope than expectation following the sudden cold snap, which came with a very sharp overnight frost. Three of our affiliated members from Abbey Lads in Southeast London joined us for the day, which shows real dedication. The temperature at the draw was minus 1 degree C rising only to 5 degrees C at the warmest point of the day. The day started misty but turned into a day with clear blue sky later.
The canal was at a good level and carried a good colour, so there were some grounds for optimism. However, the fish thought otherwise, and small fish were generally the order of the day. Only 4 boats passed through during the match, so there were no excuses there.
However, some anglers did find some fish, Colin Macbeth triumphing from Peg 6 with 5lbs 7oz, starting well catching Skimmers and Roach on Bread Punch at 7m. However, most of his fish were caught in the first 90 minutes of the match, after which he struggled. Two pegs away on peg 4, Simon Foulkes had a similar tale, again fishing punch to land 5lbs 3 ½ ounces.
Just to show the vagaries of fishing, Chris Howard a very good punch angler on Peg 5 recorded DNW! Very hard to explain.
In third place was Keith Ward from Abbey Lads on peg 1 weighing in 4lbs 5oz of perch, small roach and skimmers, fishing on pinkies with the fish taken at 14m.
On peg 2 Steve Lathwell managed to finish in 4th place with 4lbs 3&1/2 ounces using similar tactics. Even a liberal feeding of chopped worm didn’t encourage any larger fish into his swim.
Thank big you to Ray & Tracey for conducting the weigh in, Dudley, for organising the draw and thanks to the boys who did the pegging in quite difficult circumstances due to the number of boats present in the section.
Overall, it was quite a hard day and well done to those fishing for sticking it out to the bitter end.
