National Celebration of Young People and Fishing
Nearly 400 young anglers took part in the National Celebration of Young People and Fishing event on the Shropshire Union Canal this weekend. This is an event that is run by the Canal and River Trust which brings together young anglers from all over the country. I am sure that a full report will follow from the coaching team but I know that our cadets Max, Leo and Alex came 14th out of over 35 Cadet teams, with Leo individual 14th place with 1kilo 150. Very well done everyone and it was another great day for the club.

Match Report Wednesday 11th September Stanborough Lake.
We had 11 anglers out this week fishing Stanborough Lake in Welwyn, by arrangement with Welwyn Garden City A/C, and as Amer Jawad had a day off he asked if he could join us.
Many hadn’t fished this venue before, so it was a true trip of discovery.
The morning was damper and cooler at 7C and felt very autumnal. The day was fine to start, but initially overcast and we had a very strong wind blowing down the lake, which cleared later. The water had good colour and a temperature of 17C. The wind made casting and spotting bites difficult for all of us. Later, the dark overcast reappeared and as soon as we started to weigh in, we had a violent hailstorm.
First place this week was taken by Amer Jawad who spent the first four hours catching roach at 38m out on the feeder. Amer chose to fish a short hook length with maggot on the hook. Amer found his shorter hook length made hitting bites much easier. In the last hour he managed to take three big bream on worm, which he found was best for the bream once they arrived bringing his winning weight up to 25lb 8oz.
Richard Gibbs took second putting in about a pint and a half of groundbait with dead reds and casters at around 30 yards, then fished a groundbait cage feeder over the top to take nice roach and a largish hybrid in the first two hours. He had a barren spell from midday to 2 o clock when despite getting loads of bites they didn't transfer into hooked fish. Many anglers experienced this with quiver tips whipping around and failing to connect. Richard took fish on dead reds, sweetcorn, and worm but most came to double caster on a 14's hook. Richard weighed in 11lb 4oz which included a bream of around 5lb.
Third place was taken by Andy Frankum who started fishing his pole, but after being broken three times with what were presumed to be carp he switched to a waggler and managed to put 10lb 2oz on the scales at the end.
We don’t have many pictures this week because of us weighing up in a hailstorm and being cold and wet!
Many thanks to Gerald of WGCAC for helping us organise this Wednesday, which we all really enjoyed despite the weather and some having to endure long delays due to an accident on the A1 going home. We all agree we would like to fish this venue again.

Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Week Ending Sunday 8th September 2024

Here is this week’s news, catch reports and information round up from Luton Angling Club for the week ending 8th September 2024.

CRT Celebration - September 2024
Next weekend we have a number of our young Kingfisher members taking part in the Canal and River Trust Celebration event on the Shropshire Union Canal. They are all eager to do very well in the event and have been out practicing as much as they can.

One of them Luton Kingfisher Cadets, 8 year old Leo, went to the Three Locks last Sunday with his dad and he had 102 fish in three hours.Leo was fishing his top kit , while his Dad was fishing longer and failing to get bites, so he gave up and did what Leo was doing to bag a few!Leo also had his first ever Ruffe in this catch . Well done, Leo. If Leo's current performance is anything to go by it's looking very promising for the Celebration event.
Leo and his catch at Three Locks
Leo's catch from the canal at Three Locks
Junior Jack has also been practicing and getting to grips with his new pole and he also fished at Three Locks Section 3 and had 14.3lbs of fish in a few hours. A brilliant session. He had a good few fish at 4 metres on pinkie over groundbait whilst loose feeding pinkie , then when that died he had two lines at 9 and 10 metres, a chopped worm line and again groundbait and pinkie, he found the chopped worm line was working best so stuck to it and got amongst a shoal of bream and skimmers to finish of the session nicely
Jack's ambition is a top 10 finish in the Junior category (13-15 years) at the Celebration next weekend.
Jack on the canal at Three Locks
Yesterday (Saturday 7th) our coaching team ran a practice session at Town South on the canal, 10 Kingfishers took part and six of the ten who fished will be representing the Club in Shropshire next weekend.
Those not competing this year, already have their sights set on taking part next year.
The Canal seemed out of sorts, and the fishing was not prolific, but everyone caught, which bodes well for next weekend.
Three of our newer youngsters managed to bag their first Gudgeon and become members of GUGGS, the Grand Union Gobio Gobio society, and all those competing in Shropshire have their sights set on bagging one next week and getting the most sought-after prize of the weekend, this year’s Gudgeon Mug sponsored by Guru.
Matt Godfrey Guru Angler and England International is seen displaying this brilliant prize in the picture.
We even had an uncle walking along the towpath with his nephew who saw our Kingfishers and was so impressed that he immediately wanted to sign him up as a Kingfisher member! He is contacting the membership secretary straight away.
We wish everyone in our four teams next weekend at the Celebration, when 375 young anglers compete over the two days-the very best and we are sure you will do the Club proud and come home with Gudgeon mugs, medals and prizes.

Lavendon Mill - River Ouse
Bailiff Bob Burdiak strimmed downstream at Lavendon on Wednesday. He said the river looked good with some flow and colour, also not too much weed, there was nobody fishing.
He returned on Thursday and fished the upstream section. The river, unlike downstream had virtually no flow but had colour probably helped by cloud cover. He also had a north wind behind him. He fished the float taking roach from the off on a variety of baits; sweetcorn, wheat, double caster or two red maggots, as they didn’t settle on one bait for long.
He also ended up missing quit a few bites while observing a pair of Buzzards and the red kites, and it was also great to see kingfishers up and down the river, it’s not just about the fishing sometimes.

Jason Mash had 3 fish from Beckerings yesterday, the best being the Half Lin at 33lb, a fish he's been after for a while.

Match Report 4th September River Ouse Biddenham
We had 16 Anglers meet to fish this week, including one of our juniors on the last day of his school summer holiday.
The day turned out to be very pleasant with little wind despite the doom and gloom of recent weather forecasts predicting rain and thunderstorms The river had a temperature of 18C and reasonable colour, but very little flow reflecting the recent dry spell, which reflected in the fishing which was slow, with weights less than expected, but the results were very even along the stretch.
Barry Roper back from his holiday won this week, taking 3lb 7oz of Perch and Roach. He fished all day at 6 metres, alternating between maggot and pinkie on the hook. The first few hours were slow, with only a few perch caught. A few roach then started to appear, and bites then continued until the end of the match. Barry had practically no Bleak in his swim, so was able to loose feed pinkies without being bothered by them.
Dave Ridley tried for 30 minutes on the bottom but couldn’t get a bite. On the other hand he found he had a swim full of Bleak so decided to just ‘Go for it’ and put a few in the net. Dave fished shallow at 5m with a whip using red maggots on the hook and feeding pinkies ending with exactly 3lb taking and second place. Well done Dave for sticking at it.
Dennis Hunt pegged next to Barry finished third and had a very similar day fishing double pinkie at 7.5 metres to take 31 fish for 2lb 15oz. Bites through the day were very stop / start with nobody being able to get a decent run of fish.
Richard Gibbs fished chopped worm just over the weed line which only produced three small perch, and his 11m hemp and tare pole line produced just one bite, so instead he fished two 5m whip lines and caught tiny chub and the inevitable bleak on and off for rest of the match on single pinkie or single big Fluro maggot for bait.
Daniel our Junior struggled with fishing the river for the first time but was very unlucky again. as he reported losing a Chub of over a pound as he tried to net it towards the end of the match, well done Daniel for wanting to come with Dad and giving it a go.
Despite low weights, we all enjoyed being out fishing in beautiful surroundings on a lovely autumn day.

No photos were taken. However, any catch reports with or without pictures are very much appreciated.

Coaching - Luton AC - School summer holiday coaching activities.
This week saw the cumulation of the 2024 summer holiday ‘Lets Fish’ taster sessions. The #canalandrivertrust ‘Lets Fish’ project is recognised as being the best quality coaching program available and delivers a ‘one on one ‘ taster experience to a prospective angler, with a structured coaching program available for those who wish to learn more and take it further.
Over the course of the holidays, our qualified club coaches have delivered ten events, two events per week on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and have given nearly 180 people the opportunity to try an angling taster session. This has resulted in numbers of positive enquiries to the club via our QR code requesting more information, and we have had a good few sign up for our follow-on Kingfisher coaching program.
With the continued long-term decline in rod licence sales and the existing angling population getting older, which can be evidenced by the growth in the ‘Concession’ Licence category, currently this is the only growth area in rod licences sales, so introducing young anglers into our fantastic sport must be a priority and be a major survival strategy.
As well as delivering the ‘Lets Fish’ taster sessions we have continued our regular Saturday afternoon Club ‘Kingfisher’ coaching sessions, both on the Canal and at commercial venues, and have supported our young anglers at several CRT regional events.
We are currently preparing to support our 11 young anglers aged from 6 to 15 who have entered the CRT National Celebration to be held on the Shropshire Union and Trent and Mersey Canals in the next few weeks.
We are very confident they will do extremely well, coming home with prizes and hopefully some more trophies.

Wednesday Match Report 28th August Sams Lake - Twinlakes
This week, 16 of us fished Sam’s Lake on the Twinlakes complex at Biddenham, and it was nice to see some old familiar faces returning to fish with us. It was a much cooler, overcast morning with little or no wind. However, the temperature rose during the day to a very sticky afternoon peak of 27C.
As we made our way to our pegs, we could see the lake had good colour with the occasional fish topping against the Island, but the surface was mirror like with no ripple giving a ‘Sulky’ feel.
Our winner this week was Dave Ridley with 68lb 1oz. Dave fished two lines, one up against the island and one down the edge. All his fish were caught from hard against the island, using a method feeder with fishery micro-pellets & red maggots. Dave fed red maggots & 6mm fishery pellets constantly throughout the match. When the tight over swim died, Dave tried the edge for 30 minutes in the last hour but had no fish on this line.
Andy Frankum took second place using his pole. He fed the far bank against the Island with groundbait worm and dead red maggot, taking most of his fish with worm and red maggot on the hook, but he switched to sweetcorn a few times during the match, which bagged another fish, finishing with 57lb 3oz.
Third place man was Sean Leatherland who caught most of his fish close on his pole using a top two plus two sections, He was loose feeding fishery pellet and red maggot, and using double red maggot on the hook, Sean took a nice bag of 31lb of silvers and 6 Carp to finish with 56lb 4oz.
The lake did prove to be quite challenging and the weights were lower than perhaps expected from this venue, but we all enjoyed the day out, however many of us couldn’t wait to get back in the car with the aircon running and a quick shower when we got home!
Thanks again to all those who assisted with the admin and weigh in, and distribution and return of fishery nets, it’s very much appreciated by our less mobile members.
