National Celebration of Young People and Fishing
Nearly 400 young anglers took part in the National Celebration of Young People and Fishing event on the Shropshire Union Canal this weekend. This is an event that is run by the Canal and River Trust which brings together young anglers from all over the country. I am sure that a full report will follow from the coaching team but I know that our cadets Max, Leo and Alex came 14th out of over 35 Cadet teams, with Leo individual 14th place with 1kilo 150. Very well done everyone and it was another great day for the club.

Match Report Wednesday 11th September Stanborough Lake.
We had 11 anglers out this week fishing Stanborough Lake in Welwyn, by arrangement with Welwyn Garden City A/C, and as Amer Jawad had a day off he asked if he could join us.
Many hadn’t fished this venue before, so it was a true trip of discovery.
The morning was damper and cooler at 7C and felt very autumnal. The day was fine to start, but initially overcast and we had a very strong wind blowing down the lake, which cleared later. The water had good colour and a temperature of 17C. The wind made casting and spotting bites difficult for all of us. Later, the dark overcast reappeared and as soon as we started to weigh in, we had a violent hailstorm.
First place this week was taken by Amer Jawad who spent the first four hours catching roach at 38m out on the feeder. Amer chose to fish a short hook length with maggot on the hook. Amer found his shorter hook length made hitting bites much easier. In the last hour he managed to take three big bream on worm, which he found was best for the bream once they arrived bringing his winning weight up to 25lb 8oz.
Richard Gibbs took second putting in about a pint and a half of groundbait with dead reds and casters at around 30 yards, then fished a groundbait cage feeder over the top to take nice roach and a largish hybrid in the first two hours. He had a barren spell from midday to 2 o clock when despite getting loads of bites they didn't transfer into hooked fish. Many anglers experienced this with quiver tips whipping around and failing to connect. Richard took fish on dead reds, sweetcorn, and worm but most came to double caster on a 14's hook. Richard weighed in 11lb 4oz which included a bream of around 5lb.
Third place was taken by Andy Frankum who started fishing his pole, but after being broken three times with what were presumed to be carp he switched to a waggler and managed to put 10lb 2oz on the scales at the end.
We don’t have many pictures this week because of us weighing up in a hailstorm and being cold and wet!
Many thanks to Gerald of WGCAC for helping us organise this Wednesday, which we all really enjoyed despite the weather and some having to endure long delays due to an accident on the A1 going home. We all agree we would like to fish this venue again.
