Here is this week’s news, catch reports and information round up from Luton Angling Club for the week ending 8th September 2024.
CRT Celebration - September 2024
Next weekend we have a number of our young Kingfisher members taking part in the Canal and River Trust Celebration event on the Shropshire Union Canal. They are all eager to do very well in the event and have been out practicing as much as they can.
One of them Luton Kingfisher Cadets, 8 year old Leo, went to the Three Locks last Sunday with his dad and he had 102 fish in three hours.Leo was fishing his top kit , while his Dad was fishing longer and failing to get bites, so he gave up and did what Leo was doing to bag a few!Leo also had his first ever Ruffe in this catch . Well done, Leo. If Leo's current performance is anything to go by it's looking very promising for the Celebration event.

Jack's ambition is a top 10 finish in the Junior category (13-15 years) at the Celebration next weekend.
Yesterday (Saturday 7th) our coaching team ran a practice session at Town South on the canal, 10 Kingfishers took part and six of the ten who fished will be representing the Club in Shropshire next weekend.
The Canal seemed out of sorts, and the fishing was not prolific, but everyone caught, which bodes well for next weekend.
Three of our newer youngsters managed to bag their first Gudgeon and become members of GUGGS, the Grand Union Gobio Gobio society, and all those competing in Shropshire have their sights set on bagging one next week and getting the most sought-after prize of the weekend, this year’s Gudgeon Mug sponsored by Guru.
Matt Godfrey Guru Angler and England International is seen displaying this brilliant prize in the picture.
We even had an uncle walking along the towpath with his nephew who saw our Kingfishers and was so impressed that he immediately wanted to sign him up as a Kingfisher member! He is contacting the membership secretary straight away.
We wish everyone in our four teams next weekend at the Celebration, when 375 young anglers compete over the two days-the very best and we are sure you will do the Club proud and come home with Gudgeon mugs, medals and prizes.

Lavendon Mill - River Ouse
Bailiff Bob Burdiak strimmed downstream at Lavendon on Wednesday. He said the river looked good with some flow and colour, also not too much weed, there was nobody fishing.
He returned on Thursday and fished the upstream section. The river, unlike downstream had virtually no flow but had colour probably helped by cloud cover. He also had a north wind behind him. He fished the float taking roach from the off on a variety of baits; sweetcorn, wheat, double caster or two red maggots, as they didn’t settle on one bait for long.
He also ended up missing quit a few bites while observing a pair of Buzzards and the red kites, and it was also great to see kingfishers up and down the river, it’s not just about the fishing sometimes.

Beckerings Reservoir
Jason Mash had 3 fish from Beckerings yesterday, the best being the Half Lin at 33lb, a fish he's been after for a while.
Harry Albone had this Common during his session at the weekend. He had 3 fish in total biggest was 21lb. His grandad Rod had 6 fish the biggest was 25lb 5oz.

A recent short day session at Beckerings produced two mirrors from the margins for Steve Emery. The biggest was 25lbs 3oz
We had 16 Anglers meet to fish this week, including one of our juniors on the last day of his school summer holiday.
The day turned out to be very pleasant with little wind despite the doom and gloom of recent weather forecasts predicting rain and thunderstorms The river had a temperature of 18C and reasonable colour, but very little flow reflecting the recent dry spell, which reflected in the fishing which was slow, with weights less than expected, but the results were very even along the stretch.
Barry Roper back from his holiday won this week, taking 3lb 7oz of Perch and Roach. He fished all day at 6 metres, alternating between maggot and pinkie on the hook. The first few hours were slow, with only a few perch caught. A few roach then started to appear, and bites then continued until the end of the match. Barry had practically no Bleak in his swim, so was able to loose feed pinkies without being bothered by them.
Dave Ridley tried for 30 minutes on the bottom but couldn’t get a bite. On the other hand he found he had a swim full of Bleak so decided to just ‘Go for it’ and put a few in the net. Dave fished shallow at 5m with a whip using red maggots on the hook and feeding pinkies ending with exactly 3lb taking and second place. Well done Dave for sticking at it.
Dennis Hunt pegged next to Barry finished third and had a very similar day fishing double pinkie at 7.5 metres to take 31 fish for 2lb 15oz. Bites through the day were very stop / start with nobody being able to get a decent run of fish.
Richard Gibbs fished chopped worm just over the weed line which only produced three small perch, and his 11m hemp and tare pole line produced just one bite, so instead he fished two 5m whip lines and caught tiny chub and the inevitable bleak on and off for rest of the match on single pinkie or single big Fluro maggot for bait.
Daniel our Junior struggled with fishing the river for the first time but was very unlucky again. as he reported losing a Chub of over a pound as he tried to net it towards the end of the match, well done Daniel for wanting to come with Dad and giving it a go.
Despite low weights, we all enjoyed being out fishing in beautiful surroundings on a lovely autumn day.
