Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Week Ending 8th April 2018

Its been a very busy week with very many catch reports and photos being sent in

Our first Lets Fish event of 2018 went ahead on the Grand Union Canal in Leighton Buzzard on 8th April and despite the rain 34 turned up and hopefully had a good time. Roach to 12oz were caught with lots of small roach and gudgeon.

Our next FREE event is at the Three Locks on Sunday 3rd June with details available closer to the time

Enfield Highway visited the Globe section of the Grand Union Canal and despite the wet conditions put some great weights on the scales

MATCH RESULT - 1st April 2018 Grand Union Canal Three Locks

The poor weather in the run up to the London Postal Region Angling League match made the going tough for most of the 56 competitors although there were only 2 dry nets. There were no carp caught and the bigger bream did not show. Largest fish was a 2lb 13oz perch caught by 4th placed Alan Bouttell

Gareth Dawkins tempted a 24lb 4oz mirror overnight Easter Sunday/Monday.

GRAND UNION CANAL

Alex Buey & Rhys Richards enjoyed a 5 carp catch in 5 hours using Five Star Baits the Nutz. Rhys managed a couple of the stockies which are growing on well.

KEMPSTON LAKE

Nicholas Goodman had a great 36hr session on Kempston Lake this weekend despite the high water level catching 7 carp including a new pb and a brace. The fish went 24-07, 22-06, 21-02, 19-00, 16-03, 14-02 & 14lb. All caught on Mad Baits using a combination of Yellow Pear Drop, Pink Pear Drop, Wicked Whites + matching spray over Nutz+ & Wicked Whites.

Duane Richards, Chris Thripp, Paul Williams. Billy Mann, Luke Marvin & Gary Rosenthal all got in on the action this week with fish to 23lb on Thripsters mixes

Kyle Carter caught a 26lb 8oz common using MAD Baits Nutz+

Father and son Paul & Braidan Tidmarsh managed three carp to 17lb 8oz.

Predator angler Pawel Ceks caught pike of 5lb & 4lb

Rive UK General Manager & top match angler Amer Jawad fished the Grand Union Canal at Grove Marina on 1/4/18 for an up coming feature and had this to say about his visit;

'With an upcoming canal feature on the brilliant Luton AC waters near Grove Church on the Grand Union CanaI, I decided to take a look this afternoon to see what I am up against. I tried numerous things and caught on everything! Two perch which went nearly 6lb and lots of everything else makes me think this magazine feature will be a very good one... I love canals and strongly recommend anyone who lives within distance of the Luton waters buying a club book to fish the best stretch of canal I’ve fished in the U.K'

Also fishing the canal was Alex Buey who landed a perfect looking common using Fivestar Baits Peach & Pepper boilies

The Thripster Bait lads of Nigel Shopland, Chris Thripp, Steve Thripp and Luke Marvin have still been catching from Kempston Lake in recent weeks despite the weather keeping others off the bank with various Thripster bait offerings accounting for some great looking fish

Bailiff Michel Wilkins braved the bitter wind straight in his face at Grove marina for a catch of 8lb comprising 3 bream and half a dozen small fish in just 2.5hrs fishing punch. Sundays better weather saw half a dozen anglers at the marina all catching.

NEW WATERS FOR LUTON AC MEMBERS

For the 2018/19 season via an arrangement with our friends at WDNAC Luton AC members will be able to fish over 6 miles of the River Nene around Wellingborough including the Embankment, Ditchford Main, Ditchford Backbrook, Hardwater Mill, a short section of the River Ise as well as a long section of the Great Ouse at Chellington near Harrold which is only 4 miles from our Lavendon Mill river stretch. Some parts are very urban with others out in the countryside. When we visited last weekend the rivers were very high but the photos hopefully give a flavour of whats on offer. The rivers contain all the usual species to specimen sizes with chub over 7lb, pike over 20lb, very big carp plus specimen sized barbel and perch all caught recently. There are also great shoals of roach and bream for the pleasure angler. No fishing from March 15th to June 15th inclusive.
We are always on the look out for stillwaters so if anyone knows of any becoming available to purchase outright or rent then do send us an email many thanks.

WORK PARTY

Saturdays work party at Beckerings was attended by a total of 9 volunteers mainly the usual suspects Bob B, Barry S and his friend Rob (a work party newbie), Neville H, Kevin H, Dave M, Mark S and his son and one other whose name we did not get. We filled in the majority of potholes along the track (members are requested to drive slowly) we also repaired the barbed wire fence next to the ramp and lots of the small willow branches left in the water from the tree cut were removed. Sadly a lot of litter was collected and a large number of alcohol cans mainly K cider and Scrumpy Jacks cans. Members must take their little home or face being banned from the club.
Dave and Kevin also improved Platform 9 by installing additional scaffold bars and beams as the deckboards were quite springy due to the overhang. Bacon Rolls and tea was prepared for the volunteers.
