PREDATOR FISHING

Wojciech Dunaj went lure fishing last weekend and managed to catch a pike from the Ouse at Eaton Ford and a pike from South lagoon.

Dave Brosnan caught two very nice pike from North House.

Mark Zan and Filip Dunaj both caught very nice pike from South Lagoon.

Gareth Evans caught a beautiful 11.5lb pike from North House.

THE GREAT OUSE

Despite the river Ouse being flooded, Filip Dunaj still decided to fish it and this resulted in a cracking winter common.

Over the past couple of years we have been carrying out improvement work at our River Ouse venue at Eaton Ford turning it from a wilderness into a nice place to fish. The latest phase of the work has involved clearance of all the fallen trees and vegetation in and around the backwater channel and pool. Our next phase when the ground is drier and firmer is to remove some of the silt from the pool for extra depth. We have already seen fish moving around in the backwater and think this will make a great place to fish in the winter when the main river is in flood as well as providing a spawning area for fish in the spring. Thanks to Stewart the bailiff for arranging the resources to get this work completed.

NORTH HOUSE LAKE

Over the past seasons the water level in North House l has slowly been dropping . The club has been endeavouring to establish the reason as historically the lake has been naturally filled by an inlet pipe that was feed by a spring or by the water table when it was high enough. This season board members have contacted the EA to obtain permission to allow the club to pump water from the nearby river and have been organising the necessary pumping equipment. However with the extreme weather we have experienced over the past few weeks the bailiffs are reporting that for the first time in many years water from the river is actually pushing up the lakes overflow pipe and by passing a settlement chamber and can be seen entering the lake. They are estimating that if it continues over the next few days the lake will be back to its normal level.

WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT

With all the wet weather we have started to add a river level widget to our river venues pages on the club website. The data is taken from the nearest monitoring station to the venue so should give a good indication of the current river state.

NORTH HOUSE LAKE

After losing a little jack, Gareth Evans caught a cracking 14lb pike on the recast at North House.

Adam Hacklett had another brilliant day's pike fishing with two great catches.

THE GREAT OUSE

In his first year pike fishing, Mark Chandler beat his current PB with one caught at 17lb 1oz from the Biddenham stretch of the Ouse on a mackerel tail.

On a bright and breezy but milder day at Biddenham, Dennis Hunt caught a nice chub on homemade stilton and cheddar cheese paste and estimated at around the 3lb mark.

BECKERINGS

Road Closure Notice

We have been advised of members being turned away from accessing Beckerings. We have spoken to the highways agency and anglers must shown their membership book to workers who will then allow access. Once through the road closure anglers must travel at 5 miles per hour with hazard lights flashing and be careful if you encounter anyone/anything on the road. Anglers will only be able to travel to the entrance from the Flitwick direction, not from the A507 Woburn Road (Centre Parcs side). These rules must be obeyed of access may be withdrawn. The road is closed for 6 weeks from 09/12/19.

NORTH HOUSE

Adam Hacklett and his son had an awesome day's pike fishing on the lake.

WORK PARTY UPDATE

The club's trained chainsaw operators Bob and Mark were at South Lagoon Wyboston today dealing with an unsafe split and rotten tree by the popular Peg 28.

MONTHLY PHOTO COMPETITION

Chay Pinnock won the £25 November photo competition. Well done to Chay who caught the Half Lin at 35lb 4oz from Beckerings in early November. The Half Lin was out later in the month at 2oz more and there were some other great catches in November but his photo just pipped it.

THE GREAT OUSE

Bob the Lavendon bailiff enjoyed a good day on the Ouse upstream at Lavendon, catching roach and dace on pinky and caster on waggler. Probably 50+ fish in all. As he doesn't use a keep net he didn't get a picture of all of the fish but sent a picture of one of them to show the average size. He said the river looked ideal with a hint of colour and nice flow.

Dariusz Blahuta has had some nice Eaton Ford captures over the past 2 weeks. If you wondered why his hands are red it's not blood it's lamprey flavoured red bait dye!

MEMBERSHIP NOTICE

So far it has been a fantastic year at Luton Angling Club but we have some bad news for anyone who has been contemplating joining for the remainder of the 2019/20 season which ends on 31st May 2020….We are FULL and our membership for the current season is now CLOSED!

Due to a very buoyant membership over the past 3 seasons we have been able to improve our fisheries with new fish and facilities. This season has seen the very welcome addition of serviced toilets located at both Beckerings Reservoir and North House Lake. We have also paid for members of our dedicated volunteer work party team to attend chainsaw courses which has reaped dividends as we have been able to open up large previously unfishable areas of our river sections as well as dealing with fallen trees without having to pay external contractors.

We plan to continue improving all our venues as well as stocking various species of fish including carp of various year classes.

Our membership has seen a huge increase in junior members over the past 4 seasons which is testament to the great work by our qualified coaching team who give up their free time to run the many Lets Fish Events on the Grand Union Canal. it is important to get new people into the sport as they are the next generation of anglers which will keep angling clubs like Luton AC running in the future. It's also great to see so many families including mum, dads and grandparents taking the junior anglers fishing and we applaud the many friendly members we have who make Luton AC such a great club to join.

Most of our venues are secure and our keys and locks are changed every 12 months. We invest heavily in quality locks and keys as we learnt the hard way that cheap locks and cheap keys are a recipe for disaster!! Photo ID has meant the incidents of people using each others books has virtually been eliminated unlike other clubs where it's still common place and means less money going into club funds. Some clubs then have to resort to selling cut price Winter tickets to make up the financial deficit. We thankfully haven't had to devalue the club in that way.

GRAND UNION CANAL

Match Report

The Tring Anglers fished at Leighton Buzzard south GUC on an overcast day with drizzle and the odd spell of sunshine. Once again the water was nicely coloured with a lazy flow. Nigh on perfect. It was perfect for Chris Howard who fished long rod with pole float and pinkie to take a good net of bream, skimmers and roach which netted him first place.

FISHERIES UPDATE

Following on from great feedback from members and the fact that the previous stocking of Ide at Beckerings have gone on to develop well, we’re happy to announce we’ve just stocked another 100 Ide of various stamp as well as 50 Barbel to Beckerings.

NORTH HOUSE LAKE

Matthew Lloyd caught a nice pike from North House where there have been a few coming out lately.

BECKERINGS

The Half Lin was out in early November but Jack Payne caught it at the weekend weighing 2oz more than previously at 35lb 6oz.

Robert Barry Hall had a couple of very nice commons from Beckerings during some cold weather.

GREAT OUSE

Over 55s

Four of the group fished the River Ouse at Wyboston and on arrival it was a bright cold day with the air temperature struggling to make 3c - barely making 5c at midday. The river was within its banks but pushing through very hard after the recent rain with the flow even picking up for a while around midday.

In these conditions, bites were at a premium with most being twitchy affairs rather than positive indications, and therefore very difficult to hit. They had no blanks this week with everyone managing at least one fish on the bank but numbers were low. First was Dennis Hunt, who weighed 2lb 1/2oz with two roach and a nice Perch of 1lbs 15oz

and second was John Gray with 10lb 1/2oz. They won’t be out next week due to other commitments but will be fishing the Grand Union Canal in Leighton town centre the week after. Meet in Vimy Road for the draw at 9am and fish 10am till 3pm

NOTICE

For access to South Lagoon, please note that it's still very much open. If you see signs saying 'Car Park Closed', it's just the adjacent complex preventing staff parking while the Christmas marquee is being erected.

GRAND UNION CANAL

Over 55s

Four anglers fished at Slapton on a bright but cold winter’s day. The air temperature on arrival was 2C after an overnight frost with no breeze to ripple the canal surface. The water was gin clear with the colour having dropped out of the water due to the fall in temperature - a challenging day was ahead. There were four boats that passed by during the day with the hope they might put some colour in the water but to no avail. Only John Gray managing to put a fish on the bank this week - a chub of 1Lbs 4oz which took a very small red worm. John also lost another chub at the net. Well done, John. Next week they’ll be back at Wyboston on the Ouse for a rod and line only day.
