Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Week Ending 8th October 2017

Luton Angling Club experienced the highs and lows of running fisheries this week.

Sadly overnight on Sunday 1st October there was a substantial fish kill on our Grand Union Canal controlled Grove Church section with many specimen bream, perch and carp found floating dead. It was soon categorised as a level 1 fish kill which is the highest it could be classed as. Over the coming days MEM Fisheries working on behalf of the Canal & River Trust (C&RT) removed and disposed of over 1000lb of corpses including good sized carp, bream near 5lb and perch of 3lb.

The Club are awaiting more information from C&RT as to the exact cause of the deaths and we will be closely monitoring all the Canal sections we control, however recent dredging and silt deposition in the area are initially suspected of being a contributory factor, This incident we hope will be limited to the area of Church Lock.
Such a serious loss of fish will be fully investigated by the C&RT and the Environment Agency and claims for compensation & restocking will be vigorously followed up by the Club through Fish Legal the legal arm of the Angling Trust.

On a much more positive note on Thursday 5th October the club took delivery of 21x C3 (3 season old) mirror carp from Priory Fishery in Devon and these were stocked into North House Lake. Weighing between almost 5lb & 8lb+ these fish are fast growing carp having reached over 50lb in other waters they have been stocked into.

On the fishing front the cooler weather has meant fewer reports and with leaves starting to fall fishing can often be tricky.

BECKERINGS RESERVOIR
Robert Hall landed two mirrors of 24lb and 18lb 8oz

GRAND UNION CANAL
Bailiff Michael Wilkins spent 3.5hrs on Friday evening on the lower pound at Grove Church catching around 8lb of roach and skimmers fishing bread punch at 6m.
