Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Week Ending 8th May 2022

Sorry for the lack of weekly reports for the last couple of weeks. I have been extremely busy with the 2022/23 membership processing as well as full time work commitments. Please note that this weekly report contains catches spanning the duration since the last weekly report.

Our 2022/23 membership is now SOLD OUT!

Our membership is limited to prevent overcrowding at our venues. All our existing members were given priority to renew throughout April and then any remaining memberships were made available online for new members at 9am on the 1st May on a strictly first come first served basis. As expected they flew out the door and sold in record time. We have now processed all of them and they are now in the post. If you were unlucky and missed out this year then please check back in Spring 2023 for 2023/24 membership.

New members please note although you may have already, or shortly will be receiving your book and key it is not valid until 1st June and the key will not open any of the gates until 1st June.

BECKERINGS RESERVOIR
Lee Cooke can't get over his weekend session at Beckerings recently !! He was desperate get a 20 and he managed to grab a 23lb 9oz Mirror.
Then a common with white/pink tipped tail landed in the net!
Then if that wasn't enough on a single tigernut and white corn he had the Half Lin out at 36lb 3oz.
He's still in shock after a cracking weekend. He send his thanks to bailiff Neil for the advice and also Rob for taking the photos

Steve Emery fished a short evening session and fishing the margins landed this common which is a new PB for him at 30lb 7oz.
Robbie Sweet had a nice Beckerings common. It was caught on 13 inch slip d rig with worm and chopped wafter
Neil Cox fished Friday and Saturday night at Beckerings. The fish were a bit moody and the cold snap overnight didn’t help.
He had a common during the night on Friday. Then after helping out on the work party Saturday morning he tempted a nice 22lb 1oz mirror off the top and then finished off the session with another common.

The bailiff witnessed an un-named angler catch one of the catfish at 55lb on Friday 29th April.

Craig Mahoney had a common at 18lb 3oz and a Mirror of 17lb 14oz
Bailiff Rob sent in a few pictures from his 24hr session. He had 2 carp and lost 3 to hook pulls in weed. He also had 5 bream.
On the work party on 30th April our team of work party volunteers replaced the hand rail on the ramp. Modified the bridge to make it slightly wider. We also improved the concrete threshold on the new otter fence gate so its easier to get barrows through the gate, built a barrow parking area so you can park your barrow while opening the gate and also we made repairs to platforms 4 and 27 and installed a new notice board in the car park. Thanks to all the volunteers that helped out.

Coaching Update
The Luton coaches have been busy this weekend with a well-attended follow-on coaching session on the Canal at Slapton on Saturday afternoon. All who came practised their bankside setup and pole fishing skills and caught well on Squatt and pinkie. We had some new attendees straight from our last ‘Lets Fish’ session who really enjoyed the afternoon.
Monday we took five of our more advanced Juniors to the commercial fishery at How End for something completely different. Phil and Tania Stone were very welcoming, and all our young anglers had a brilliant time.
None had ever caught a Carp before, and they all had a few in the net as well as some very nice Chub at 3lb+ and Perch over 2lb by the end of the session. They were practising fishing a pole and a method feeder, using maggot, pellet, and corn as bait and all caught on both methods. All our young anglers learnt an awful lot today including the important lesson of managing the disappointment if a fish falls off!
Alfie (I can’t catch Carp) Hawkes weighed in 54lb, followed by James (I can’t do this Oakes) with 33lb and Sam (I’m enjoying this) Chamberlain with 28lb, all ending with over 20lb.
Very many thanks to the Luton Coaching team and Phil and Tania at How End, the Club are developing a group of very talented young anglers.
Match Report, Wednesday 4th May
Town South
On 4th May 18 anglers met by the White Bridge on Town South for the Wednesday match.
The Canal was a very funny murky colour, perhaps caused by rain the night before. The day was overcast and damp, with light rain as the anglers were setting up.
The match was pegged either side of the bridge, and back towards the town, perhaps the last time we will be able to fish this area for some time as the towpath is soon to be closed for repair for some weeks. There were several boats that passed during the morning, which caused some disturbance, but fewer in the afternoon. The end pegs paid off today with pegs 1 and 18 in first and second places.
It was a return to form for Dudley Frankland on peg 1 who finished in first place catching most of the fish on two lines, the bottom of the near shelf and the bottom of the far shelf. Dudley used a pole and alternated the lines using pinkie and dead reds fished over groundbait, laced with squatt and dead pinkies. He also took 2 bream up on far shelf tight to far bank on a cage feeder using chopped worm & caster. Dudley weighed in 19lb 7oz to take first place.

Second place went to Tom Webster on 18 he started with a short line in front and two lines at 13m. On all three lines he fed groundbait with pinkie and squatt. On the short line he fished 4mm punch over the groundbait and had about 7 small skimmers and about 5 roach. Then that line just dried up so he went on the 13m lines with dead red maggot on the hook and caught the odd bigger skimmer. He topped up these two lines with chopped up pinkie and red maggot in groundbait and just picked up the odd skimmer till the end of the match to weigh 13lb 8oz for second.
Richard Gibbs spent the first half hour on the feeder and had two good pull arounds but didn't connect. He went on the punch on the nearside and started catching roach and small skimmers. He then switched to pinkie and continued catching until boat a movement ruined the line. He spent the rest of the day at 11.5 metres catching roach, some net skimmers, and some perch, to weigh 4lb 12oz for 3rd.

Malcolm Ogden had another great day taking a specimen canal roach of 1lb 7oz on worm.
15 minutes before the match ended the sky turned black and the heavens opened again, and we ended packing wet gear away on another wet Luton Wednesday!
Many thanks to all who helped in organising the draw, especially Trevor Bunnage who got very wet doing the weigh in!
