Match Report 19th April GUC ‘The Globe’

It was a fine but overcast morning when a brilliant turnout of 19 anglers met at the Globe for what was to turn out a great day’s fishing. The starting temperature was 8C, but there was a chilly breeze that made some swims problematic. We had some threatening dark overcast at midday which came to nothing, and then the sky lightened, and the sun appeared with some welcome warmth, the temperature ending at around 14C.
The canal was holding good colour with a midday water temperature of 12.5C, an increase over recent weeks, indicating that the warmer spring temperatures are on the way.
Our winner this week was Andy Frankum, with a fantastic 26lb 4oz of bream and skimmer, using his pole feeding caster and chopped worm in groundbait 3/4 across the cut and caught on caster / worm and worm tipped with red maggot.
Dennis Hunt took second place with 18lb 5oz of Bream, Skimmers, Roach and Hybrids. He started using punch at 4 meters and took some skimmers and roach for about 4lb in the first 90 Mins, and then went over at about 13 Metres and fished double red maggot with loose fed pinkies over groundbait laced with squat to take the bigger bream and hybrids.
Third this week was Dave Abbott with 15lb 9oz, with Adrian Smith in fourth slot with 13lb 10oz, reporting all but a pound and half of his fish were caught on the near shelf using Fluro pinkie over groundbait. The others were caught over the far side again on pinkie.
Several of the anglers including the framers lost big fish through the day, but special mention must be made of ‘Poser’ Gibbs who spent an awful long time playing a fish which initially he thought may have been a carp but turned out to be a 3lb bream, well done Richard, had us all fooled there!
The total fish caught in the match this week was 171.5lbs and the average just on 9lbs per man. After the match, we retired to the Globe to discuss the day swap stories and have a bite to eat.
