Kaden’s Coaching session with Tommy Pickering
Following his terrific success in getting second place in the CRT Global communities’ Junior event last weekend where he beat some of the best young Junior anglers in the country Luton Junior Angler  year old Kaden Dixon (13) had an incredible opportunity to attend Tommy Pickering’s Pathway masterclass, held near Sheffield on Tuesday, courtesy of CRT and Fjuka bait.

His Mum has sent this report of a fantastic coaching day.

"Kaden only started fishing 6 months ago through the Canal River Trust ‘Lets Fish’ initiative, following his taster session he joined the Luton Coaching program, later joining the Luton Junior team, and being invited to the Daiwa sponsored Global Communities event, coming second in the Juniors.

Kaden was incredibly nervous to be in the company of very well equipped and experienced young Anglers from all over the country at this event with Tommy.

This was also his first experience with commercial fishing, having learnt his craft on the canals. However, he was grateful and excited to be selected for this opportunity and the opportunity meet world champion Tommy Pickering, alongside Tom Scholey.

It was a cold, wet early start to our journey from home, as we needed to be at the Aston Park Fishery, near Sheffield for 8.30am. The weather unfortunately remained very miserable all day.
After breakfast, the morning started with an amazing demonstration by Tommy who taught the young anglers the basics of a good tackle set up, correct feeding amounts, the 10second rule laying the rig into the lake and a very valuable tip on how to never have a unwanted hook in your keepnet or the bank again.

Next, Kaden set up his own equipment alongside the other anglers. It continued to rain throughout the morning, and all the youngsters struggled to get any bites due to the weather  which was causing poor conditions on the lake.

Eventually, all the anglers were moved onto another nearby lake with better fishing conditions and began to catch.

After some initial difficulties, Kaden began to catch and land fish continuously, mostly F1's, and a couple of Bream, having a great time.

At the end of this session, Tom Scholey estimated Kaden’s total catch weight at 12lbs.
Tommy Pickering made his way around the 15 anglers while they were fishing, spending time with each of them offering some very valuable coaching advice as he observed their fishing technique.

As a parent I was immensely impressed with Tommy, and his gentle calm approach to coaching the anglers. He was informative but did not bombard them with information. They could understand and absorb the knowledge he was sharing easily without feeling overwhelmed. This really helped relax and motivate them throughout the afternoon.
This was an experience that Kaden says he will always treasure as the first Luton Junior Angler to be selected for one of these opportunities, he's met an absolutely amazing England World champion angler and most importantly he has learnt some key information that has boosted his own confidence, that will enable him to progress his angling further."

There is some video of this event on the catch more media facebook page

Wednesday Match Report 25th October GUC Town South
It was a change of venue this week, as due to the recent heavy rain we were advised the Nene at Ringstead would not be fishable, so we opted for our reserve venue, Town South instead.
We were pleased to welcome David Nicholson on his first time out with us this week, and he has already indicated he will be out with us again next week.
It was a dark drizzly morning with the temperature at only 10C as we met up by the White Bridge. Some benefitted with swims in the sun, but others had a cold morning until the sun came around at midday to warm us up.
The water was well coloured and much colder due to the heavy rain at the weekend. Boat traffic was heavy this week as it was half term and not all behaved well, one boat having a very near miss with a large workboat hit the bank near Adrian Smith nearly taking out his keepnet, and others seemed to struggle keeping to the correct line.
On form Sean Leatherland fished loose fed caster over groundbait at 11Mtrs but he caught most of his fish on red maggot, the fish refusing to take his caster. Sean had a mixed bag including three decent Perch to weigh in 6lb 1oz.
Richard Darbon back from his holiday had the advantage of the end peg by the Black bridge and ran Sean close with 5lb 13oz. He caught most of his fish short at 3.5 Mtrs using pinkies over groundbait with a few at 8 Mtrs.
Dudley Frankland chose to fish at 7/8 Mtrs at 10 o’clock down the track with Chopped worm and dead pinkie, and another swim on the far edge of the track with groundbait laced with Caster. Dudley alternated baits using worm, caster, and dead maggot to end with 5lb 10oz.
Many thanks for all who assisted as Stewards this week Les and Andy for the pegging and Tracy for recording the weights.

Building Bridges continuing to support and help protect angling clubs.
Clubs and fisheries across England face a growing number of difficulties and the Building Bridges Project helps to stand side-by-side to help. Recently they joined up with the Luton AC Wyboston bailiffs to discuss and advise how the waters can be better protected, as well as providing free multi-language signage and leaflets.

These are great links for everyone involved, with bridges being built between the Angling Trust and many fisheries.

The Building Bridges project is part of our Fisheries Enforcement Support Service and funded from fishing licence income through the Angling Trust's National Angling Strategic Services contract with the Environment Agency.

Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Week ending 22nd October 2023

Here is all of the news, information and catch reports from Luton Angling Club for the week ending Sunday 22nd October 2023.

Lavendon Mill - River Ouse
Roger Bland had a challenging day on the river at Lavendon on Monday, The water was high, very coloured, pushing through fast, and plenty of weed debris floating past. Using heavy feeder tactics and 3 red maggots on the hook, He managed to winkle out 4 nice Bream, the biggest about 7lb and 3 Roach. Also another nice Bream was lost at the net. It should fish really well as the level drops.

Beckerings Reservoir
Lewis Redding had a lovely 19lb Common from Beckerings Wednesday. He set up for the day and nothing was happening so moved onto showing fish at the other end of the reservoir and he had it within half an hour.

It's getting to the time of year again where shooting takes place on or around the Reservoir. The necessary risk assessments have been carried out by the shoot organisers, and the reservoir remains open to anglers. The shoots are usually of a relatively short duration, and the gamekeepers will patrol prior to the shoot to advise anglers of what to expect.
We'll try and have signage on site warning that a shoot will be taking place on the relevant days. Please note that these shoots are not arranged or organised by LutonAC.

Grand Union Canal
Not a recent catch but this picture popped up on Edward Allens facebook memorise this week and serves as a reminder of the fantastic winter fishing the canal has to offer. This superb Perch was caught three years ago by Ed's son Dexter on the canal near Three Locks and weighed 3lb 9oz. They'll definitely be targeting our waters for some more big Stripey's this winter.

CRT & Daiwa Global Communities Celebration Event.
Hinstock Shropshire Sat 21st October 2023.
This weekend the Luton Coaches and three invited young Luton Anglers made their way to Shropshire again to take part in the CRT Daiwa sponsored Global Community event, a now annual legacy event following the Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham last year with 250 competitors taking part.
The weather in the 48 Hours leading up to the event was terrible, with heavy wind and rain from Storm Babet all over the country. However, the morning of the match dawned bright and clear, and apart from the Shropshire Union canal being very full and the colour of milk chocolate (as can be seen in the pictures) due to the amount of mud washed in by the rain, everything went off very smoothly, and there was no further rain during the match.
The three Luton anglers, were two young Juniors Dylan and Daniel, and a full junior Kayden. They did extremely well.
The conditions meant the fishing wasn’t easy, but Dylan came individual 24th with 250 Grams and Daniel Individual 15th with 450 Grams and a team result of 6th in the young junior (10-13) category. They came away with medals and prizes, Daniel bagged a Daiwa Waggler rod for his 15 / 45 place as well as a plaque for top catch in the team.
Kayden, our Junior weighed in 1 Kilo 800 Grams, an exceptional performance in the conditions beating some much more experienced Juniors. He was placed individual second out of 45, being pipped for top slot by just 100 Grams. His team were second placed overall in the junior category. Kayden picked up his individual second place trophy, his second place team trophy, which also included the highest team weight, and a Daiwa feeder rod and reel, with tackle boxes etc.
We have some talented young anglers representing the Club, who look very smart in their blue Luton shirts, and we should all be very proud of their achievements.
Next Saturday we start our winter once a month classroom session for our Cadets and Junior anglers teaching skills that are hard to do on the bank like tackle setups etc, held in a Luton Community Centre, do you know anyone who would like to join us, cost is £5-00 per session to help with the cost of room hire, please contact the club for more details if you know anyone who may be interested in joining us.

Match Report 18th October
GUC Town North
It was a dark late autumn morning with the temperature at only 13C, and a cold breeze blowing as we met on the bank on Wednesday. The water was coloured and temperature much lower at under 10C due to the sudden drop at the weekend.
We were also aware of an approaching storm with its associated drop in air pressure.
The canal surface in some areas was covered in leaves that had recently fallen from the trees and for some in the more exposed swims it was a very chilly affair with many reaching for windproof jackets from the off.
We had two ‘Breasted Pairs’ of old GUC Town Class working boats come through at the start and a couple of other boats during the day. Given the conditions I think most were expecting a tough match.
Our winner this week was Les Burton who fished a feeder rod to the far bank and took one decent bream and some bits to weigh 2lb 14oz.
Second place was taken by Dudley Frankland who fished two lines, at 9m at 10 o’clock & 2 o’clock, one positive line with chopped worm & the other using a strung-out rig with caster & pinkie. He alternated between the two through the match, catching perch and one skimmer for 2lb 11oz.
Sean Leatherland caught both at 2.5 and 9m throughout the match and caught mainly small roach using squatt, maggot and caster for 2lb 10oz. Sean commented that he should have had more, but he was one of those plagued by the leaves on the surface.
Dennis Hunt, in one of the wind tunnel swims, was 4th with 2lb 3oz of mainly skimmer with a decent hybrid all taken on pinkie over groundbait at 9m
Many thanks for all who assisted as Stewards this week Barry Roper and Ash Bunnage and special thanks to Roger Baker who came to weigh in and recording the weights for us, enabling us to clear\ the bank before the heavy rain started.

Paul Presland - Beckerings Common
Members should note that the farm are planning to install some new pipework into Beckerings reservoir on Monday (16th October) from the new lagoon in the North West corner of the reservoir. Very little of this work will have an impact on the use of the reservoir except when they dig across the top of the bank. This will be done relatively quickly and backfilled immediately. The finished job will have no impact on the path around the top of the bank itself.
Members should not impede, obstruct or interfere with the work taking place and should follow any instructions from the workers on site.

River Ouse - Wyboston
Information from the bailiffs is that the Roach have turned up as anglers reporting good catches.

Wedhesday Match Report 11-10-2023
Biddenham River Ouse
8 anglers were present for this week's Wednesday match on the River Great Ouse at Biddenham. Once again, the club and bailiffs do a superb job in managing the water.
The river colour was great but with the recent dry weather, there was not much in the way of flow. Thanks to Barry for doing the quick "recce" of the pegs and we agreed which eight to include in the match. With no rain forecast until 2pm it came as a surprise to all (well, all that is, except Les who had pointed out the big black cloud looming over us, when a heavy rain shower hit just as we were drawing pegs. Thankfully, but for a smaller shower, the rain held off until the match ended and the majority had returned to their cars.
Fishing this week was more difficult than had been envisaged with a number of anglers reporting the fishing being affected by the Ouse's predatory fish. Ray caught two pike during the match and other anglers had fish taken by other predators.
Adrian Smith drew end peg no 14 and switching between 9m where he fished worm or double red maggot over groundbait and 13m fishing worm or double red maggot over worm, maggot and caster caught a mixed bag for 5lb 15ozs.
Richard Darbon on peg 8 was 2nd in the match and kept his tactics simple by fishing a 5m pole and double red maggot for another mixed bag of fish for 4lb 1-1/2ozs.
Les Bolland on peg 7 was third with 3lb 10-1/2ozs. Included in Les's catch was a lovely perch of 2lb caught on the feeder with worm hookbait under the tree across the river.
Full Result:
1st - Adrian Smith 5lb 15ozs Peg 14
2nd - Richard Darbon 4lb 1-1/2ozs Peg 8
3rd - Les Bolland 3lb 10-1/2ozs Peg 7
4th - Barry Roper 2lb 6-1/2ozs Peg 6
5th - Ray Burton 11ozs Peg 9
6th - Tony Hickmott 9-1/2ozs Peg 12
7th - Malcolm Ogden 6ozs Peg 10
8th - Terry Vickers DNW Peg 13 (Caught a few perch)
No photos this week due to a hasty weigh in and pack up before the rain hit
Thanks to Ray Burton for organising the pools and draw and for his neatness in producing the match sheet.
Our next Match is Wednesday 18th October on the GUC at Town North (Leighton Buzzard), meet at the venue for the draw at 8.30am am. £1.00 peg fee and £5.00 optional pools, fish 10am till 3pm.
For anyone thinking of joining us for the first time can we ask that you message us so we know you are coming before turning up, so we can ensure we have room as this will allow us to better manage the pegging. You will be asked to produce your Club book at first appearance, so please have it with you.
