Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Week Ending 9th June 2024

Here is the weekly catch reports, news and information round up from Luton Angling Club for the week ending 9th June 2024. Just one week to go and then we can get back on the rivers again, let's hope this year is a little drier than last year and we don't see as much flooding!

All our bailiffs and work party volunteers have been hard at work preparing all our river sections for the start of the season, no jungle warfare is needed to access our river sections and they are kept in superb condition by our team of volunteers including ordinary, committee members and bailiffs. sadly the number of ordinary members attending to help out has declined and it’s just the same few familiar faces every time, so we will be looking at ways to encourage members to come along and lend a hand for an hour or two on our future work parties.

Beckerings Reservoir
Member CJ fished the opening weekend and landed two carp and lost another one, The biggest caught being a lovely 25lb mirror which was taken using simple snowman tactics over pellet and mixed particle.

Grand Union Canal
Kaden Dixon one of our Junior Kingfisher members had a busy day down at Three Locks on the 27th May he was catching pretty much continuously all day. Most of the fish were nice sized Perch and Bream. He thinks this one is probably his personal best for a Perch on the local canal.

The bailiff reports that there plenty of fish were caught over the weekend with a few big commons showing up, also a lad in bottle swim had 6 fish of which a few were some of the stockies.

Chris Hanlon finished his first session on the lake and he managed to capture these two beauties one at 17lb and another at 18lb 10oz he said he'll definitely be back for some more action! He thanks bailiff Brian for taking the awesome pictures of the 18lb fish

Match Report 5th June 2024
South Lagoon Wyboston
After last week on a commercial it was back on natural water this week, the Club fishery at South Lagoon. As we met at the lake, the morning was fine, but cool and with no rain was forecast. Despite that the rain gods didn’t stay away entirely as we had a brief shower at midday!
We even had a surprise visitor, as Amer Jawad turned up and spent some time chatting to Richard Gibbs and a few of the other lads .The fish turned out to be fickle and somewhat reluctant to feed even in the banker swims, perhaps due to the large temperature variation of recent days. The water temperature this week was recorded at 17C, which was warmer than the air temperature at midday!
We had a dead heat this week between Steve Lathwell and Barry Roper for first place with 3lb 9oz each. Steve Lathwell fished the tip at 30 metres, having to keep changing baits using maggot, pinkie and worm to get bites, eventually tempting a few skimmers. Barry Roper fished three lines, his pole at 4 and 11 metres and waggler at 15 metres. Barry had to keep switching between lines and between maggot and caster on the hook to get bites. Apart from a 12oz skimmer all his fish were small roach to around 2 ounces.
Dave Ridley took third this week with 3lb 1oz, he fished two lines to take his fish one at 30m using a method feeder and banded casters as bait and caught one bream 2 1/4lb on this line. This was the biggest fish taken during the day. As bites dried up, he changed to a waggler with Pinkie as bait one rod length out but could only catch bleak.
Richard Gibbs put six feeders full of groundbait out first at about 30metres, and also fed a pole line at 11 metres. He spent first hour on feeder but after having no bites, he went on the pole. He caught around half a dozen small bleak and roach and kept getting pestered by a Grebe diving all over his swim, so he went back on the feeder for rest of the day. Bites were few and far between, he managed two small roach and three Bream using a Drennan cage feeder and Guru size14 feeder hook, baited with double (red and white) maggot to finish with 3lb.
Our thanks must also go to our other visitor who turned up to see us, Adrian Smith, who very kindly did the weigh in and took the pictures this week.

Some more work party updates
During the week, Bob Burdiak and Mark Brooks returned to Wyboston with their chainsaws to deal with a couple of fallen trees blocking the path along the river. Then today(Saturday) a few of us Brian Turner, Fergal O'Kane, Barry Stevenson and Dennis Vivian and myself(David Murdoch) carried out some minor repairs to the track between the river and North house lake. We filled some of the larger potholes and scraped off a lot of the lumps. Meanwhile Neville Hunt strimmed and trimmed some of the swims around the South Lagoon.
There's still a lot to do, and we'll arrange another work party soon to work on the track around the lagoon and along cyanide straight.
