Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Week Ending 6th October 2024

Here is this week’s round up of news, information and catch reports from Luton Angling Club. There is very little to report this week due to the poor weather and with many of our venues are still recovering from the recent flooding with very saturated ground, muddy conditions and the rivers are still in flood conditions

Beckerings Reservoir
Mark McLennan had a 28lb common when Roach fishing on Friday. He sends his thanks to Craig Stevenson on peg 18 for weighing it (as his own scales weren't up to the job) and for taking the pictures.

Luton AC Charity Predator Match - Saturday 12th October SOUTH LAGOON CLOSED
Members and day ticket anglers are reminded that South Lagoon at Wyboston will be closed on Saturday 12th October for the 2024 Luton AC Predator Challenge. Water levels in the lagoon are fallling so we expect the match to go ahead as planned.

John Morris Memorial Match 6th October - POSTPONED
Our match secretary made the decision this week (after having seen a picture sent in by a member, of the track leading to the car park gate at Biddenham) to call off the John Morris memorial match that was scheduled for this weekend (6th October)
It's a dreadful shame but he doesn’t believe he has ever seen water this high here before and was certain the venue would be unfishable on Sunday.
With more rain forecast he knew the water wasn't going to go down very quickly, and the saturated ground in the car park will take time to dry, and after such extensive flooding the venue will probably need some work to get it fishable again as inevitably we always end up with lots of rubbish, logs and detritus deposited along the bank
We will try and reschedule this fixture when conditions are more normal. Let's hope we don't get another year where the rivers are a pretty much no go area!!

Match Report 2nd October Three Locks Upper & Lower
This week we had a hasty rearranging of or match which had been scheduled to take place at Lavendon, but with the venue underwater due to flooding, we arranged to fish The Three Locks sections on the GUC, but we still managed a good turnout of 17 members.
We decided to use the upper and lower sections to avoid moored boats and also long walks (Thunderstorms were initially forecast for the afternoon), so we had 7 anglers pegged below and 10 pegged above the locks.
The weather although overcast and drizzling to start turned out to be a reasonably dry autumn day with a couple of brief periods of drizzle midday and the forecast thunderstorms didn’t materialise, so none of us got too wet! The air temperature after a cooler night was 12C, and we even had some brief spells of sunshine.
The canal after the recent heavy rain was coloured, and with a water temperature at 12C was noticeably cooler, no doubt due to the vast quantity of cold rainwater that entered it in the last week.
We had several boats go through (as they all decided to come out again because it wasn’t raining) and watching some of the antics of the (very) amateur skippers was quite amusing if it wasn’t your swim being compromised! Dave Ridley said it took 30 minutes to get another bite after the boats in the picture crossed!
Below the locks the end pegs dominated with Barry Roper and Tim Watts taking first and second. Barry swapped between 4 and 7 meter lines to keep bites coming feeding squatt and using pinkie on the hook. His catch was mostly small perch with one decent bream. Tim Watts had 35 small Skimmers and Roach and a nice Perch. He found was hard work to get bites but very happy with it how went.
He cut back on feed and went down to size 22 hooks this week, commenting the Canal was a lot colder, and the fish felt cold to the touch.
Barry took 5lb 1oz for second overall and Tim ended with 4lb 15oz for 3rd highest weight overall.
Above the lock Keith Ward had a few fish in the middle of the track on punch then went to 14.5 Metres and fished the far bank using chopped worm and ground bait.
Chris Howard took second by setting up 2 whip lines at 3.5 and 5.5 metres. Chris fed squatt and fished pinkies with an occasional switch to punch to finish with 4lb 13oz, closely followed by Colin Holmes in third with 4lb 10oz.
Thanks to Ray Burton for doing the admin, and I would like to thank Simon Foulkes and Barry Roper for volunteering to do the pegging and Tracy and Roger Baker who came over specially for weighing everyone at the end.
