Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Week Ending 1st June 2025

Here is the latest news, information and catch report round up from Luton Angling Club for the week ending 1st June 2025.

This week (1st June) we welcomed in our new members for the 2025/26. Thank you to all our existing members that renewed and to all our new members, We hope you enjoy your membership.

All the locks have now been changed to the 2025/26 cores. Please use the new "Y" stamped key. Please note that where two locks are present, it is the BLACK lock. The RED locks are our override locks, and your keys will not open them.

Our waters will be busier than usual for the first couple of weeks into the membership especially as the close season means our river stretches are off limits until 16th June - Not too long now for those of you desperate to get back out on them.

Our bailiffs and work party volunteers are busy preparing the river sections so they are in great condition for the 16th June. Our aim is to eliminate any jungle warfare getting to the swims on all our river sections.

To this end we have a work party on the River at Wyboston on Sunday the 8th June any member wishing to help out for a couple of hours is very welcome. We will meet in the nature reserve car park at 9am. The work taking place will be swim clearing, strimming and general maintenance.

Beckerings Reservoir
FISH SPAWNING: 01/06/2025 We have had some reports (and video confirming) from members that the carp in Beckerings have started spawning again. We don't close venues during spawning as there are plenty other species to fish for. Please let the carp get on with it and do not cast near or on top of spawning fish as there is a danger of foul hooking - its pointless as their attention is elsewhere. This applies to all our venues. We will keep you updated.

Abby-Leanne Williams caught a PB Common at 28lb on Bank Holiday Monday during a very short 2 hour session with her family at Beckerings, It's the same fish Damien caught a year ago also at 26lb 8oz

Alders Farm open day 31st May
Our Club coaches and volunteers were busy this weekend delivering ‘Lets Fish’ and supporting our Junior and Cadet teams that were fishing at the Alders Farm open day. This year, In contrast to last year when it was cold, we had a lovely warm summer day for the show, which was well attended by the tackle trade. The show was very busy with over 900 cars in the car park! It was great to be visited by lots of our club members, with many stopping to say hello and joining in to help us.
We delivered around 40 taster sessions on our little pool, and all who attended caught nice Rudd and Perch and learnt some basics of fishing. We have had lots of follow-up enquiries following the show, which we hope will lead to more Luton Junior members swelling our ranks.
Coaches were also supporting our Luton Angling Club Junior and Cadet teams who were entered in the silverfish competitions arranged by CRT and sponsored by Daiwa. The competitions were fished against teams from other local clubs and organisations in our region.
The Juniors fished on Pines Lake while the Cadets fished one of the other smaller pools. Luton did very well in all the matches, our team of three Juniors, (Jack Kayden and Daniel) were in third place after the morning session, but following a storming afternoon session ended up taking first place in the Junior teams competition with Jack winning his section in both the morning and the afternoon to finish with 14 points and become the Junior champion on the day
Leo and Haroon (teamed as world select) took the Cadet team title, and Leo took individual second being beaten by 1oz by Haroon for first place in the Cadets with over 7lb of fish. Our other Luton Cadet Team Max and Daniel also did extremely well, with Daniel catching his first Carp. As it was a silverfish contest, this fish unfortunately only counted 1lb
All who fished were given prizes by Daiwa, and a copy of Tommy Pickering’s latest book was also given to the Juniors. This was a fantastic all round performance by our young Luton anglers and the Club is extremely proud of them all.

A New Club Individual Knockout Competition for 2025 - Enter it Now!!
The Grand Union Canal - Pick and Choose.
The Club used to run a Canal Pick and choose Head-to-Head knockout competition every year and we are looking to revive this event for 2025. There is a small entry fee of £5.00 to cover the cost of the trophy and the rest of the funds will be donated to a chosen charity (Prostate Cancer Research).
The competition will start in June 2025 and all entries must be received by Friday 6th June.
There will be a maximum of 32 places. When all entries are in, The organiser will conduct a draw for the pairs that will fish against each other, the draw for round one will take place on 7th June). In the event of an odd number in any round the last angler from the draw will be awarded a bye into the next round.
Those drawn against each other may fish at any location on the Club's Grand Union Canal sections.
Matches will be between 3 to 5 Hours duration as mutually agreed by the competitors.
After the match is fished the organiser must be informed and the winners will go forward into the next pair draw for the second round, and again fish by a set date.
This process will continue until only two anglers remain and the final will take place to decide the winner , which will be when trophies are decided. A match for third place will also take place between the losers of the penultimate round.

Match Report Wednesday 28th May
Stanbrough Lake Welwyn
This week we had originally planned to fish North House Lake, but it was decided to change our venue and we opted to fish Stanbrough Lake instead, courtesy of our friends at Welwyn Garden City A/C who made us welcome and gave us use of one bank for the day.
The weather was very mixed as we met at the lake, starting with a cool overcast and gradually warming, but a strong blustery wind made life difficult for some anglers, especially those in the middle section who were more exposed, and also some of the young yachtsmen practising on the lake (we had forgotten it was half term!). There were some occasional breaks in the cloud when the sun appeared, but there were also darker skies that threatened rain on several occasions, although they only delivered some light showers much to everyone’s relief!
The lake had nice colour and water temperature was recorded at 18C. It turned out to be a day where both ends of the bank dominated, you were either on the big bream or you weren’t, although there were some nice roach caught, Tony Hickmott taking one of 14oz and Dennis Hunt one of 12oz.
Our winner this week was Simon Foulkes, following on from his recent win at South Lagoon. Simon opted to fish the feeder again, clipping up at 50m he introduced 14 full feeders of ground bait laced with casters, hemp and micro pellets. Simon then fished over the top with either small bits of corn tipped with pinkie or dead reds on the hook, with just 2 small perch to show in the first 2 hours. He decided to reduce the amount of time the feeder was left in the water to introduce more bait from 8/10mins to 4mins: this soon produced the first Bream with others following at around 30min intervals. Simon ended the day with 37lb 7oz.
Second place man was Brian Shaw, with his first time in the frame for some weeks. Brian went with a simple maggot feeder, coupled to a size 16 hook, using triple maggot as bait at around about 20 metres, ending with 32lb 14oz.
Richard Darbon was third with 21lb 1oz. Richard also decided to fish on the tip at 20 Metres, using a cage feeder with double maggot on the hook.
Colin Holmes finished in 4th place and weighed 13lb 0oz. At the off Colin put in 10 large cage feeders of corn/casters/dead maggots at 10 wraps, planning to leave this to settle for an hour. His method feeder was clipped up at 15 wraps with a banded robin red pellet, but after casting it turned out this was absolutely spot on where the sailing boats would capsize as they turned, so this plan failed!
Colin then reduced this rod to 10 wraps and fished for an hour with no bites, so he changed to a cage feeder and 3 maggots. An hour passed, and the indicator dropped back, resulting in a bream of about 6lb. Colin then changed to 4 dead maggots as bait and caught 2 skimmers. He then changed again to corn and had nothing, so he went back on the method feeder for the last half hour and had two more drop backs, resulting in another bream of about 6lb.
We all enjoyed our day ‘Away’ fishing Stanborough. Thanks very much to Gerald and the Welwyn team, and to all those who assisted with admin, draw and weigh in this week.

LAC Summer Series
Round 2 of the LAC Summer Series took place on the GUC at Braggenham Side on Sunday 18th May 2025.
13 anglers took part in the match. Other regulars were unavailable as they were assisting the regional junior match run by the LAC coaching group for the CRT. Well done to all those organising and assisting the junior match.
Whilst weights were a big improvement on the previous round decent catches are still hard to come by.
Winner on the day was Chris Howard. Chris drew well on the "flowering bush" peg and made no mistakes in targeting the bream. He decided against pole tactics and instead opted for a bomb rod using a micro 6grm feeder with worm hookbait. He then fed pinkie and caster over the top. The tactic worked well and Chris caught 6 bream for 14lb 6ozs and an easy win.
In 2nd place came Liam Willis. Fresh on the back of the previous round win, Liam drew peg two and used the pole to fish tight against the far bank reeds where he had four bream for 8lb 3ozs 12drms.
In third place was Peter Deppe who after catching early then worked hard to pick up odd fish and a nice skimmer near the end for 2lb 15ozs
Round 3 will be on 29th June on the River Ouse at Biddenham. The draw at 8.30am. £2.00 peg fee and £5.00 optional pools, fish 10am till 3pm. There are 8 matches in the Sunday Series and the best 5 section results from eight count for the final league placings (one of which must be a river match)
For anyone thinking of joining in with the friendly matches, they are open to club members and if you are joining us for the first time can we ask that you message us so we know you are coming before turning up. You will be asked to produce your Club book at first appearance, so please have it with you and you are very welcome.
