Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Week Ending 11th August 2024

Here is a round up of all the news, information and catch reports from Luton Angling Club for the week ending 11th August 2024.

North House Lake
The lake was closed on Sunday for a work party to take place, Those attending the work party were able to fish exclusively on Saturday night, Bailiff Brian took advantage of this and had a 19lb Mirror and an old warrior of a common at 28lb, The Common came straight to the net after around 10 minutes however the Mirror put up more of a fight and had him all over the lake, He said the Mirror was in superb condition and he could not see any old hook holds on it. He also lost another two one of which was a smaller mirror which was lost right at the net which was a bit frustrating but overall he enjoyed the session.

During the work party the volunteers cleared and opened up a number of the swims removing the encroaching lilies and reeds, we also trimmed the overhanging branches and burnt all the branches and reeds along with the existing piles of debris from prior work parties.    The undergrowth outside the otter fence was also strimmed and tidied up. It was hard work in the hot weather but member Andy Smith came along and provided burgers, sausages, cakes, tea & coffee and cold drinks for the volunteers which were enjoyed by all.

Dan, Chevonne, and Harley did a 48-hour session from Wednesday - Friday this week .
They had such a great time - Firstly, Harley ( little man ) caught his new PB a stunning 24lb common carp, which he was determined to hold himself
Daniel caught 2 17lb commons, which fought like hell !!!! and then he also caught a beautiful mirror, possibly one of the stockies weighing 14lb 1oz ?
Then Chevonne had had a lovely 15lb common.

A cheeky Thursday afternoon short session (08/08/2024) led to my first carp from Beckerings, both fish came in close succession with one lost at the net! The lost fish was fortunately came between the landed fish. The first common was 16lb 2oz and the second common was 17lb on the nose, both fell to Madbaits Nutz snowman presented baits. The quality of the photos are not as good as he would have liked as they are screenshots taken from a video. The first photo is the 17lb fish

South Lagoon
John Botfield fished on 5/8/24 at South Lagoon. He had 87 bream and skimmers plus 1 fully scaled mirror for 120lb+ in weight, one carp lost, all were caught on groundbait feeder at 37m.
Unfortunately, he didn’t get any decent pictures, as he was on his own at the time.

Grand Union Canal
As all our Kingfishers were engaged in other activities, with most on holiday and doing an archaeological dig, we cancelled the scheduled coaching session this weekend.
Instead, as it was an almost perfect morning for fishing, two coaches Dennis Hunt and Roger Baker decided to fish for a few hours at Slapton. The Canal, after a funny few weeks, seems to have suddenly switched on again.
Dennis used a pole top kit + 1 with a 0.25 gram float and a 20 hook fishing at about 4 metres with pinkie on the hook, sparingly loose feeding pinkie over small balls of groundbait It took about 15 minutes to get the swim to go, but when it did, Dennis, who fished for 4 hours, took 86 fish, averaging a fish in just under every 3 minutes for the session. His catch consisted of Roach, Skimmer, Gudgeon, and Perch for an estimated weight of over 7lb.
Roger, who had arrived slightly later fished on after Dennis left at about 6 Metres, and managed to get among the bigger skimmers, he had a number in the 1lb to 2lb region and had a perch of just under the 1lb as well in his catch.
It really was a most enjoyable session for both.

Match Report 7th August 2024 Yasi’s How End
This week, we were fishing Yasi’s at How End. The weather was warm and overcast when we started, but the overcast rapidly got worse, and a chilly wind got up, making many anglers reach for jumpers and sweatshirts. We had some heavy spots of rain and some drizzle at times, which made the day slightly challenging.
Colin Kidd, our winner who was out with us for the first time used a pole top kit down the edge with a 6mm banded pellet as bait, feeding micros through a pole pot on one side, but loose feeding maggots on other, still with pellet on hook, ending with 83lb 7oz. He messaged us afterwards and said thanks for welcoming me on Wednesday, I had a lovely day on a great venue. I hope to see you all again soon.
Richard Gibbs was second and said due to reed growth on his left, he was unable to pole fish the nearside margins, (a noted fish holding area!) so set up two feeder rods, 10ft for far side and 8ft for nearside, both with 18grm hybrid feeders loaded with groundbait and venue micro pellet. Richard caught most from the far side on a size 14 hook loaded with 4 dead reds. He was loose feeding fishery pellet and tare. He reported he had a big chub and several Ide but fishing was very stop start all day apart from the last 45 minutes when it was a fish a chuck. Richard ended with 69lb 14oz.
Richard Darbon who took third, struggled at first and wasn’t happy the way he was fishing, so after 2 hours with no carp he changed from the middle to the margins. He fished top kit out in front of him, feeding micros and maggot using corn on the hook to take 46lb 5oz.
All who fished enjoyed the day out, and our thanks this week are to Pip, Tarnia and Phil for allowing us to fish this How End water, and to Tracy and Ray who helped with the draw and weigh in.

Club Coaching Summer Activities & Events Last week our coaches started the delivery of our summer holiday events with two very successful events, one held at Slapton and the other with the permission of the LAA at Canal Fields Berkhamsted, and this week we ran events at Three Locks and Bullbeggers Lane, again with LAA permission.
All the events run so far were well attended with most complete sell outs, and all those attending caught at least one fish, which was great. We have had a lot of interest in joining our Luton Kingfisher coaching program and have had several aspiring anglers join us. We have had and some fantastic feedback generated via our Feedback forms, some anonymised examples are given below:
“We have had a fantastic time at the ‘just fish’ event , the team were brilliant”
“My son really enjoyed his first fishing experience. He's super shy and your coach was so lovely with him”
“Our son did an introductory experience with his friend at the Grand Union canal. It was a very informal and friendly session, and the guides were so helpful. I would recommend this for a youngster to have a trial go. We will try and book again”
“What a fantastic experience, your coach was amazing with George all the people were lovely. Our son was very anxious as he is autistic but loved it. Really impressed with the affordable price and 1-1 session. I don’t think many people know about this. I came across it on Facebook and as George had been asking to go fishing, I thought it was a great opportunity as we don’t fish and don’t know what to do. Thank you so much for all you do with the children and providing such a fantastic opportunity to try fishing”
“I’ve had the best day ever in the school summer holiday”
Next week we are at Slapton on Tuesday, and Canal Fields on Thursday, and we are delivering two ‘Lets Fish’ events a week throughout the school summer holiday.
Booking of these events is via the CRT Eventbrite system and this year there is a modest charge of £5-00 per session plus a small booking fee, so it you know anyone who would like to attend get them booked on while you can!

WORK PARTY AT NORTH HOUSE LAKE
On Sunday 11th August North House Lake is closed from 8am until 5pm for a work party, General venue maintenance will be carried out including some thinning of the reeds in some of the swims. Members are encouraged to attend and lend a hand. Only members assisting with the work party can book on Saturday night and anyone wishing to fish on Sunday may not arrive until 5pm unless assisting us with the work party.

River Ouse - Lavendon Mill - Upstream
Colin Crane decided to give Lavendon another go on Friday after catching 100 Roach on his last visit, and he did it again! Switching between a waggler and a slider set up, he caught constantly throughout the day. It took about an hour to get them feeding but by 3pm he'd hit his target of 100 again.
Apologies for the photo but on this occasion with it being a very hot day, he took a quick photo of the fish in his keepnet before returning them.

There were 6 anglers at Lavendon on Friday proving that our car park was a welcome addition to the venue. According to the bailiff, another member Lee Waring lost a large fish on lobworm, which was likely one of the big carp that patrol the stretch.

River Ouse - Eaton Ford
Colin Crane also visited our Eaton Ford stretch on Saturday after having great success at Lavendon Mill, He did well here as well catching his target of one hundred fish, they weren't all Roach this time as there were a few chublets and Dace mixed in.

River Ouse - Biddenham
Youngster Grayson caught his first ever fish this week, he has been a member since last year with his Nan and Grandad but was a bit too young to fish then. Now he is a year older he's started having ago and had little Chublet caught on single red maggot and size 18 hook.

Luton Kingfishers - Sweep the board at the CRT Regional Event.
Luton Kingfishers swept the board at the CRT Northampton Regional Match held on the GUC at Upper Heyford on Saturday 3rd August. The day was warm and muggy, with a strong wind blowing along the cut, and heavy holiday boat traffic made the fishing challenging.
We had five Kingfishers representing us, , two in the Cadet Class and three in the Junior Class supported by our coaches. All the young anglers had a fantastic day, with a clean sweep, taking all the top slots and getting some fantastic prizes.
Leo took first in the Cadets with a weight of 2lb 6oz including a lovely Perch of 1lb 14oz. Second was taken by the fast-improving Alex who got the most promising Cadet award with 1lb 4oz.
The Junior title was taken by Jack who produced a tremendous performance with his pole, at both long and short lengths to weigh 2lb 8oz.
Dylan triumphed over his brother Daniel with a long awaited second place with 2lb 2oz, pushing Daniel into third place with 1lb 11oz.
Dylan demonstrated his skills with a waggler as when his short pole line died he changed and fished a waggler taking a decent Perch to bolster his weight,
It was a brilliant performance by the Kingfishers as they were up against some well known young anglers who had travelled significant distances to compete,
All the Luton Coaches are extremely proud of our young anglers.

Match Report 31st July Barnwell Plantation River Nene
We were fishing Wellingborough water on the Nene at Barnwell this week, a lovely rural stretch of river, which recently hosted a ‘Riverfest’ qualifier heat. We had 10 anglers attending, as we had several of the regulars on holiday.

The weather was warm and overcast when we started but the overcast rapidly cleared, and we had a sunny day with the temperature rising to 30C in the afternoon. The river had good flow but was very clear we had 3 boats and a couple of paddleboarders pass us but they had no effect on the fishing .

Dennis Hunt decided to approach the venue with 2 lines, one at 6m down the edge in about 7 ft of water, and the other at 9m in about 10ft down the middle. He decided to feed groundbait laced with pinkie and caster on both lines, and start fishing the 6m line from the off. Using double pinkie as bait bites were there from the start, and he started to catch small perch from the off. He made the decision to stay on this line until it slowed but the middle line failed to produce, despite several tries over the duration of the match, so he stuck on the inside line taking Perch, Chub, Dace, Roach and Bleak in his catch, weighing in 5lb 8oz for first place.

Adrian Smith who took second place spent first couple of hours on flat float over groundbait but only caught a Perch and Bleak. He then moved onto his hemp line and caught Roach interrupted occasionally by Pike trouble for rest of match with wheat on the hook which proved to be the best bait for him. Adrian weighed 5lb 6oz.

Richard Gibbs started on a stick float, fishing a couple of rod lengths out in about 8ft of water using hemp and maggot. He had small Perch from the off but couldn’t really get a run of fish, he would get 3 or 4 and then the bites would stop. This may have been due to the Pike he had that was clearly visible nosing around his keepnet for most of he day.

Richard changed to a whip a 6m for the last 30 mins and had a decent run of Roach ending with 4lb 14oz of silvers for third.

All who fished enjoyed the day out, and our thanks this week are to Wellingborough, for very generously allowing us to fish their water, and to all those who helped with the draw and weigh in.

Venue Security
One of our members discovered the Gate from the car park into the field open on Sunday morning. It is extremely important that all gates are securely closed, latched and where applicable locked after use to not only maintain venue security but also to prevent any livestock escaping.
