Here is a round up of all the news, information and catch reports from Luton Angling Club for the week ending 11th August 2024.
North House Lake
The lake was closed on Sunday for a work party to take place, Those attending the work party were able to fish exclusively on Saturday night, Bailiff Brian took advantage of this and had a 19lb Mirror and an old warrior of a common at 28lb, The Common came straight to the net after around 10 minutes however the Mirror put up more of a fight and had him all over the lake, He said the Mirror was in superb condition and he could not see any old hook holds on it. He also lost another two one of which was a smaller mirror which was lost right at the net which was a bit frustrating but overall he enjoyed the session.

During the work party the volunteers cleared and opened up a number of the swims removing the encroaching lilies and reeds, we also trimmed the overhanging branches and burnt all the branches and reeds along with the existing piles of debris from prior work parties. The undergrowth outside the otter fence was also strimmed and tidied up. It was hard work in the hot weather but member Andy Smith came along and provided burgers, sausages, cakes, tea & coffee and cold drinks for the volunteers which were enjoyed by all.

Beckerings Reservoir
Amer Jawad went down to Beckerings the other day for a bit of slider fishing. He managed one decent 7lb Bream and some decent roach to go with it

Nick Lynch had four fish to over 25lb and Kenzie had one bang on 20lb during their session this week.Nick and Kenzie's first fish hit the nets at the same time.

Dan, Chevonne, and Harley did a 48-hour session from Wednesday - Friday this week .
They had such a great time - Firstly, Harley ( little man ) caught his new PB a stunning 24lb common carp, which he was determined to hold himself
Daniel caught 2 17lb commons, which fought like hell !!!! and then he also caught a beautiful mirror, possibly one of the stockies weighing 14lb 1oz ?

Andrew Elliman caught 4 carp weighing 26lb, 17lb, 16lb and 13lb 8oz and he also had 2 bream at 7lb 8oz and 8lb from peg 19.

A cheeky Thursday afternoon short session (08/08/2024) led to my first carp from Beckerings, both fish came in close succession with one lost at the net! The lost fish was fortunately came between the landed fish. The first common was 16lb 2oz and the second common was 17lb on the nose, both fell to Madbaits Nutz snowman presented baits. South Lagoon
John Botfield fished on 5/8/24 at South Lagoon. He had 87 bream and skimmers plus 1 fully scaled mirror for 120lb+ in weight, one carp lost, all were caught on groundbait feeder at 37m.
Unfortunately, he didn’t get any decent pictures, as he was on his own at the time.
Grand Union Canal
As all our Kingfishers were engaged in other activities, with most on holiday and doing an archaeological dig, we cancelled the scheduled coaching session this weekend.
Instead, as it was an almost perfect morning for fishing, two coaches Dennis Hunt and Roger Baker decided to fish for a few hours at Slapton. The Canal, after a funny few weeks, seems to have suddenly switched on again.
Dennis used a pole top kit + 1 with a 0.25 gram float and a 20 hook fishing at about 4 metres with pinkie on the hook, sparingly loose feeding pinkie over small balls of groundbait It took about 15 minutes to get the swim to go, but when it did, Dennis, who fished for 4 hours, took 86 fish, averaging a fish in just under every 3 minutes for the session. His catch consisted of Roach, Skimmer, Gudgeon, and Perch for an estimated weight of over 7lb.
Roger, who had arrived slightly later fished on after Dennis left at about 6 Metres, and managed to get among the bigger skimmers, he had a number in the 1lb to 2lb region and had a perch of just under the 1lb as well in his catch.
It really was a most enjoyable session for both.

Match Report 7th August 2024 Yasi’s How End
This week, we were fishing Yasi’s at How End. The weather was warm and overcast when we started, but the overcast rapidly got worse, and a chilly wind got up, making many anglers reach for jumpers and sweatshirts. We had some heavy spots of rain and some drizzle at times, which made the day slightly challenging.
Colin Kidd, our winner who was out with us for the first time used a pole top kit down the edge with a 6mm banded pellet as bait, feeding micros through a pole pot on one side, but loose feeding maggots on other, still with pellet on hook, ending with 83lb 7oz. He messaged us afterwards and said thanks for welcoming me on Wednesday, I had a lovely day on a great venue. I hope to see you all again soon.
Richard Gibbs was second and said due to reed growth on his left, he was unable to pole fish the nearside margins, (a noted fish holding area!) so set up two feeder rods, 10ft for far side and 8ft for nearside, both with 18grm hybrid feeders loaded with groundbait and venue micro pellet. Richard caught most from the far side on a size 14 hook loaded with 4 dead reds. He was loose feeding fishery pellet and tare. He reported he had a big chub and several Ide but fishing was very stop start all day apart from the last 45 minutes when it was a fish a chuck. Richard ended with 69lb 14oz.
Richard Darbon who took third, struggled at first and wasn’t happy the way he was fishing, so after 2 hours with no carp he changed from the middle to the margins. He fished top kit out in front of him, feeding micros and maggot using corn on the hook to take 46lb 5oz.
All who fished enjoyed the day out, and our thanks this week are to Pip, Tarnia and Phil for allowing us to fish this How End water, and to Tracy and Ray who helped with the draw and weigh in.

All the events run so far were well attended with most complete sell outs, and all those attending caught at least one fish, which was great. We have had a lot of interest in joining our Luton Kingfisher coaching program and have had several aspiring anglers join us. Next week we are at Slapton on Tuesday, and Canal Fields on Thursday, and we are delivering two ‘Lets Fish’ events a week throughout the school summer holiday.
Booking of these events is via the CRT Eventbrite system and this year there is a modest charge of £5-00 per session plus a small booking fee, so it you know anyone who would like to attend get them booked on while you can!

There is an external match (HASSRA Angling Society) on Thursday 15/8/24 at LAVENDON MILL UPSTREAM fields 1 and 2 are closed for the duration of the match. This fixture is not in the club book as it was not confirmed at the time of printing the club book.
Any member wishing to fish LAVENDON MILL on this date can fish either the downstream section or field 3 (field 3 is furthest to the left of the car park – the swims in between the trees).
