Roach Aficionado Nobby Clarke was back at Wyboston twice this week. On his first visit on the 30th June having originally planned to fish at Biddenham he changed his plans and went to Wyboston instead . He was very late arriving so only fished from about 4.30pm until around 7.30pm , the weather didn’t know what it was doing but it wasn’t quite as humid as it has been of late but the couple of showers we had hadn't done anything , it was tough going but he expected that , He Iost two roach that were quality fish which he guessed were 1lb each minimum, one was lost to a pike ,and one threw the hook close to the net - but that’s fishing for you. he had a small bag of bits with only 3 or 4 decent roach the rest of the fish were very small.Baits were Giant hemp for the hook, hinders Chinese hemp for feed , Natural Tares , Blackened Tares and Urid beans , I actually caught on all baits , the better roach he had on Blackened Tares and one on Urid Bean. All in all an enjoyable couple of hours.

Hemp and Tares |
He returned on Saturday this time accompanied by his mate Geoff Cunliffe Geoff fished the tip and had some nice Roach and Skimmers and ended up with a nice mixed bag. Nobby had some nice Roach using the whip most of his were taken on Blackened Tares feeding hemp at different depths , He bumped several Roach which was unfortunate but he was really happy with the quality today , they really did smash the Tares and that is definitely what they wanted they seemed to favour the black Tares this time as he hardly caught on Natural He’ll be going to Biddenham in the early part of this week to see if he can find a few red fins there we look forward to receiving his next report.Beckerings Work Party
A mini work party was held Tuesday evening A work party was carried out this evening on Beckerings to rake out some of the marginal weed in front of the platforms to enable safe landing of fish. The weed removed was carefully checked for any small fish. We were pleased to see some tiny Tench and Pike.

Thanks to Mark Sessions, Rob Thomas, Colin Holmes, Jack Rose, Barry Stevenson and new work party volunteer David Nicholson for helping out
You'll see from some of the pics the water levels are getting low due to irrigation pumping and are now at that awkward point. Please be very careful when landing fish as the banks can be slippery until they have dried out. Once the water drops a little further it will be possible to set up in front of the platforms.
Biddenham - Chairmans Shield Match - Sun 3rd July
It was a rather disappointing turnout for the Annual Committee, Officers and Volunteers match at Biddenham today as only 6 fished, the lowest number for several years. Given the weights recorded earlier in the week from the lower numbered pegs we opted to fish the higher numbered pegs from 30 up where there is noticeably more flow.
The day started with heavy overcast and most caught well for the first hour, and the fishing got noticeably harder when it cleared, before more heavy overcast threatening rain appeared, only to clear again later. The wind was at times quite strong and veered downstream during the match.
Winner was Dennis Hunt who fished a whip at between 6 and 7.5 metres into about 8 ft of water in the flow.
Dennis used maggot as bait feeding maggot and hemp through a bait dropper to try and keep the fish down, taking a good mixed bag for 3lb 14oz. Colin Holmes took second place fishing feeder and float setups, weighing 2lb 1 oz. Dave Murdoch was 3rd with a mixed bag for 1lb 14oz
Results
1st Dennis Hunt 3lb 14oz
2nd Colin Holmes 2lb 1oz
3rd Dave Murdoch 1lb 14oz
4th Dennis Vivian 1lb 8oz
5th Fergal O’Kane 1lb 5 oz
6th Mark Sessions 13oz
All who fished enjoyed the day and it was great to catch up with old friends, and let’s hope for a better turnout next year

Three of our fast-improving Luton Junior anglers, Charlie, Alfie and Cody, and newcomer Devon, were able to join the Club coaches on the canal at Three Locks on Saturday. Our session this week was an informal practice match in preparation for the CRT Commonwealth games ‘Regional’ match to be held at Three Locks next weekend. Other members were not able to attend this week due to family commitments and holidays.
The weather was warm and muggy, with an overcast threatening rain, and the water holding good colour. Our match was two and a half hours, boat traffic was minimal, and the lads were limited to 3 Metres for the first hour.
After setting up and introducing some groundbait and pinkies, good fish came to the net, with two big Perch and a decent Bream taken, along with lots of smaller fish, other baits were tried but pinkie or double pinkies proved the most successful. All of the lads showed some good skills playing and landing their own fish.
All our Luton Lads enjoyed the afternoon, and we are sure they will all do well in the match next weekend
Results
1st Charlie Hawkes 3.9 lbs
2nd Cody Partridge 2.8lbs
3rd Devon Golder 2.4lbs
4th Alfie Hawkes 0.97 lbs
SENSAS Oakwood Summer Canal League - Round 1 Results
The first of 6 rounds round of the Oakwood summer canal league was held at the weekend, with a further rounds to follow at two-week intervals. This year there are seven teams competing.
This round was fished on the northern sections of our GUC waters. Braggenham Side & the Three Locks area. The weather on the day was warm, and at times sunny.
The League reports a fair match that fished evenly along the sections used. While the weights were not huge there were a lot of smaller fish caught. The bigger bream seemed to switch off after the first hour and the overall winning angler this week was James Drakulic (Image Red) He took a very nice hybrid Roach / Bream and continued to catch the smaller fish feeding squatt over groundbait for 12lbs. James Lewis (Colmic Borland Northants) had 10lb 8oz skimmers and in Joint third Chris Howard and Ian Wing, (both of Barts) with 10lb 7oz. A total of 35 anglers fished taking a total of 201lbs 7oz during the match
Team positions after Round 1 are:
1st Image Red
2nd Colmic Borland Northants
3rd (Joint) Oakwood Green & Image Blue
5th Oakwood Purples
6th Barts
7th Oakwood Black
Well done to the Luton Anglers in the competition especially Chris Howard for joint 3rd

Match Report, Wednesday 29th June Biddenham River Ouse
We were all looking forward to our first Biddenham match of the season when 15 of us met this week. The morning temperature was 18C and the sky overcast and grey, threatening rain to start. The grey cloud lifted and then became an ominous grey with some rain spots at lunchtime before lifting again and becoming a nice sunny afternoon.
It's early season, the river is clear, with a midday water temperature of 19.5C recorded and has a slow pull. It really hasn’t woken up yet and could do with some rain to produce a flush of water to freshen it up and improve the fishing. We fished swims 4 to 20, leaving out those with weed, and the fishing may improve with a longer walk to the higher number swims where there is more flow.
First place this week was taken by Steve Lathwell with 2lb 13oz. Steve started at 13 meters on his pole using a 1.5 gram float fishing maggots, but contacted bleak rather than the desired roach. He changed to 6 metre line on the whip, but still caught bleak on maggot, so he changed to hemp and caster and had small chub and yet more bleak! He then opted to change again to 4-metre whip and maggots for the bleak to try and put a weight together.
Dennis Hunt was second with 2lb 6oz fishing a whip at 7.5 / 9 mtrs. He fed several hard balls of groundbait at the start, putting maggot on the bottom with a bait dropper. He was fishing maggot on a 1.5 gram float rig, and loose feeding hemp to take a mixed bag of bleak, roach, chub, and perch.
Joint third with 2lb 2oz were Richard Gibbs and Ash Bunnage. Ash had initially balled in groundbait in the inside, and after failing to get a decent run of fish opted to fish a waggler over. Richard Gibbs had decided to go for the perch at 6 /7 mtrs and try for roach at 10/11 mtrs. The perch failed to show, and the hemp and caster line didn’t produce either, so he switched to maggot on the long pole line to pick up a few fish.
The weights were low today, the river isn’t yet in great form and sport will pick up when the roach begin to take the hemp and tare in the lower number swims.
Many thanks to all the bailiffs who have done a great job preparing the swims, and those who helped organising the draw and weighing in this week, we all enjoyed our first Biddenham trip of the season and will be back.

Let's Fish
On Sunday Luton Angling Club held a Lets Fish session on the club's section of the Grand Union Canal at Slapton. The weather was warm but it was windy and quite strong gusts at times. The boat traffic was minimal and the water was coloured.
All the participants caught many fish including the usual suspects of roach, bream, skimmers and perch. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the experience on the day and several of the youngsters asked their parents to book another session as they enjoyed it so much. A follow-on session is planned for this coming Saturday (2nd July) on the canal at Three Locks where some of our more experienced juniors attend to improve their angling skills, Most of these youngsters first taste of fishing was at one of our Let's Fish Events.
If you know someone who might like to come and have a go and learn how to fish check out the canal and river trust "Let's Fish" webpage to find an event near you.
