Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Spring Bank Holiday Edition 29th May 2023

Here is this weeks news, catch report and information round up from Luton Angling Club.

The locks at all our venues will be changed late evening on 31st May. Any member that has not renewed their membership must leave North House/Beckerings/Slapton Canal Car Park by 8pm on the 31st. Any member that has renewed must ensure they have their NEW key with them in order to exit the venue once the lock has been changed.

All new members are reminded to read all the rules in their membership book before going fishing.

Spawning Update
With the weather warming up fish are starting to spawn at some of our venues. It is difficult to predict when they will start/stop spawning and they can start and stop several times over a couple of weeks. We do not close venues during spawning as there are other species to fish for we request that in the interest of fish welfare that members are respectful and avoid fishing near or for spawning fish. Let them get on with their business and it will soon be over!

Hanwell Prince of Wales Match Group

We received a recent match report from Peter Finch of the Hanwell Prince of Wales match group...

"We had a lovely day fishing the Grand Union Canal at Ivinghoe on Sunday.
Top 3 weights were 1st place 17-8-0 followed by 15-8-0 in 2nd place and 12-0-0 got third.
A couple of weights almost 5lbs and others down to the lowest weight of 2.5lbs. Catches were made using crumb, chopped worm, pinkies. The top weights were caught all along the stretch and consisted of Bream and Roach"

Kingfisher follow on Coaching pathway, Slapton Sunday 27th May A few of our young Kingfisher members came to a coaching session on the canal on Sunday. We fished at Slapton on a fine afternoon with the water having good colour. Despite it being Bank Holiday boat traffic was quite light and didn’t really bother those fishing.
We had a range of abilities on the bank again, all those on the bank, our young anglers, coaches, and parents really enjoyed the day, and did really well, and we all came away having learnt something. The fishing was slower than of late perhaps due to fish spawning, but all caught with Dylan and Uthmaan both catching nice hybrids. Cody was practicing with a long pole.
Dylan did well hooking and playing his fish and even remembering to put another section on his pole when the fish ran. His lovely hybrid weighed 1lb 4oz and put up a very decent scrap, well done Dylan. Uthmaan also had a decent Hybrid, his biggest fish so far, and his mum said he had the best day! He was fascinated by the spines on his Perch dorsal fin!
We are holding another Let's Fish at Slapton this week and hope to recruit some more talent into the Kingfishers.

Match Report 24th May Three Locks Section 3 (Lower)
We had 10 fish our Wednesday Match this week, on a fine, warm late spring morning.
We had intended to fish Section 2 at Braggenham side, but due to numbers of moored boats, we decided to fish section 3 instead. The anglers had a couple of double boats in the first hour, which did nothing to improve the anglers’ prospects.
Sean Leatherland was in winning form again this week, taking small skimmers and some roach and perch at 11.5 Metres throughout the match using red maggot and caster over groundbait to finish with 13lb 11oz. Sean had a decent skimmer taken by a pike as he was about to net it.
The Pike was estimated at between 7 and 8lbs.
A very well deserved second this week was Malcolm Ogden with 3lbs 5oz,
Malcolm fishes nearly every week, and it was good to see him frame and collect some cash!
Ray Burton took a well deserved third with 2lbs 4oz just pipping Bart Bonito who managed fourth with 2lb 2oz
Results
1st Sean Leatherland 13lb 11oz
2nd Malcolm Ogden 3lbs 5oz
3rd Ray Burton 2lbs 4oz
4th Bart Bonito 2lbs 2oz
5th (joint) Terry Vickers & Dudley Frankland 1lb 2oz
7th Barry Roper 8oz
DNW Jim Tookey Chris Howard and Les Burton
