Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Week Ending 21st May 2023

Here is this week's news, catch reports and information from Luton Angling Club.

We've not received many reports this week with the warmer weather arriving it looks like the fish are getting ready to spawn with some of the North House fish already showing the signs that spawning is imminent and have obviously been crashing around in the marginal reed beds.

We'll do our best to keep you updated with spawning at our venues via the facebook page. Please be respectful, they are not interested in your bait while spawning and fishing for them and casting towards spawning fish can harm them and they are in real danger of being foul hooked, the quicker they get this out of their system the quicker things will be back to normal. We do not close any venues when the carp are spawning as there are plenty of other species to fish for and not everyone is after the carp.

It's nice to see many responsible members cancelling their night sessions and avoiding waters while the carp are spawning.

Luton Kingfisher follow on Coaching pathway, Town South 20th May.
On a lovely warm and sunny day, the Club coaches ran a planned pathway session on Town South.
Unfortunately, there were a few of our young anglers missing today as some were taking Judo tests, others had family commitments, and one just felt unwell!
However, we had four that did attend,
Uthamaan came to collect his new pole and try it out, catching 6 fish before he also had to leave early, but he will be back with us to carry on his angling journey very soon.
Daniel and Dylan continue to hone their Canal skills, both now being competent young anglers who caught well for all the session and didn’t want to go home. Alfie was practising fish a pole ‘Long’ for the first time and was getting on well, catching fish and mastering the technique, and will possibly be back on the bank practising again tomorrow.
The Club are very proud of all our Kingfishers they are very talented young anglers.

Wyboston Track Repairs
David Murdoch, Brian Turner, David Thorne, Fergal O'Kane and Paul Sweet put in a fantastic amount of work on Saturday at Wyboston. The track between North House Lake and the River which was getting very lumpy and bumpy was scraped back to the bricks and around the South Lagoon] a lot of the potholes were filled with material and compacted with a whacker plate. MEMBERS AND DAY TICKET ANGLERS ARE REMINDED TO DRIVE VERY SLOWLY ALONG THE TRACK 5MPH MAX as this will prolong its life.

Match Report 17th May Three Locks Section 4 (upper)
We had 18 anglers turn out for our Wednesday match this week, on a fine warm late spring morning. The sky was clear, but this alternated throughout the day. At times, we had periods of quite heavy overcast, but no actual rain, on what turned out an eventful day.
As we arrived on the towpath a historic pair of narrowboats, a GUC ‘Town’ class motor of 1938, built by Harland & Wolf, and a wooden ‘Butty’ the last wooden boat built in the UK at Braunston in 1958 were pulling away heading south. This pair made the last commercial run on the GUC in 1970 to the Robinsons Jam factory in Southall, carrying coal from the midlands’ pits, known as the Jam Hole run, and it was great to see them on the Cut. We then had no more boats until around 2 in the afternoon.
After reaching our pegs and starting to fish ‘Chainsaw Charlie’ from the CRT Contractors arrived and proceeded to attack the fallen tree on the off bank that has been there for some years. The Club had no warning of this work (indeed the local CRT Ops manager didn’t know of the work being undertaken by the contractor either) and this was eventually halted after a large branch fell in the water narrowly missing an angler’s pole and messing up swims. The match group have raised this matter as an official incident with CRT.
The Canal had good colour and had a starting temperature of 15.2C rising by 1C to 16.2C when we finished. This sudden rise in temperature seems to have put the fish in spawning mood, and the fishing this week was far slower than we have recently experienced and the weights much lower.
Sean Leatherland managed a couple of decent bream for a well-deserved 1st place with 8lb 3oz, while Jim Tookey on his first time out with us for some time took 6lb 13oz for second. Andy Frankum took 3rd with 6lb 7oz. Bary Roper played and hooked a big Carp on his pole for 15 Mins, getting it to just before the point he was to net it when it bolted and broke him. Dennis Hunt in joint 5th had a rather nice chunky perch in his 4lb 1oz.
