Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Week ending 5th November 2023

Here is all of the news, information and catch reports from Luton Angling Club for the week ending Sunday 5th November 2023.

The terrible weather this week with the arrival of Storm Ciaran kept many people off the banks and there have been noticeably fewer reports. River levels and flows remain high with further rain forecast this week. We have had a few hardy members who decided to brave the conditions and have been rewarded with some good catches.

Match Report 1st November 2023 Three Locks Upper & Lower
Following the clock change at the weekend we had been expecting a lighter morning this week, but due to early overcast with wind and rain, this didn’t happen. With the numbers expected, we had decided to put a Section (A) below Three Locks and another Section (B) above the flight with 10 pegs in each.

Following the recent rain, the canal was highly coloured, with a midday water temperature of 11C. The weather forecast for the day wasn’t great, and we did have four seasons in one day, but it wasn’t generally as bad as we had perhaps initially expected.
The fishing however turned out to be difficult and somewhat patchy, some anglers struggling to catch, and recording DNW, which may have been due to the approach of storm Ciaran and the associated drop in air pressure.
The overall winner Tim Watts, who was pegged on section A and got a peg on the boats. At first, he wasn’t overly pleased with it, however it fished well. Tim reported no small fish at all, just a good stamp, and so had to wait and work for bites. He rotated and fed 3 separate areas down the far shelf, further over, tight to the boat and inside lines. He reported feeding quite heavily, going for it, which was a risky strategy, and he ended not getting a bite in the last hour. He ended up with 12lb 14oz for the win, made up with Skimmers a big Roach and a big Perch.
Our Winner on B section was Andy Frankum, who had a bit of a mare of a day losing 3 big bream, what he thought were a couple of big perch, and a couple of rigs to snags. He tried all sorts, changing rigs and hooks, but try as he might, they still fell off! Andy finished a frustrating day with 4lb 4oz.
Second on A was Colin MacBeth with 5lb 5oz, with Tony Hickmott third, and on B Sean Leatherland took second place by fishing short at 3Mtrs for the first half hour and then going to 11Mtrs where he fished worm and red maggot to take mostly small fish and a bonus perch and skimmer, ending with 3lb 15oz, beating Richard Darbon who fished short using pinkie over groundbait by 1oz!
Despite the relatively low weights this week, we all enjoyed the day, and we didn’t get too wet, although it was getting rather dark as we left the bank, a taste of things to come.
Thanks to all those who helped with the pegging, weighing, and admin again this week, without the team effort, we couldn’t run our weekly day out.

Our reports tend to slow down at this time of year, so please do send in any content to keep the weekly reports alive through the winter months. Any content you can provide is appreciated even if its not catch related, even just pictures from the venues, updates on river conditions and as weather gets colder whether waters are frozen etc as this information is helpful for us to share with our members. Don't forget any catch pictures submitted are automatically entered into our monthly photo prize competition where a picture is selected by the committee to receive a £25.00 cash prize. The chosen winner for October was Colin Barden with his Pike from the South Lagoon.
