Luton AC Winter League - First Round
Last Sunday saw the staging of the first round of the LAC Winter League at Town South - GUC. This was due to be the second round however the first round was postponed due to the canal being frozen. The venue for this round was moved to Town South due to the current boat traffic on Town North caused by the current lock closure at Three Locks.
21 anglers turned out for the match and although greeted by milder dry conditions there was an awkward wind to contend with. The match was pegged from White Bridge to just past Black Bridge.
Winner on the day was Colin Holmes with 6lb 5ozs. Colin drew end peg 22 past Black Bridge and caught a lovely bream of around 3lb with his third cast and after a quiet spell landed a beautiful perch of near 3lb and then followed up with 4 small roach and a perch for his catch.
Chris Howard was second. Pegged near White Bridge, Chris started down the track and caught small fish on fluro pinkie before landing a perch of 1lb on a large red maggot. Chris then continued to catch small fish by switching close-in lines to weigh in 2lb 7ozs.
Third place was shared between Danny Worth and Peter Deppe who both weighed 2lb. Danny was pegged next to White Bridge and caught his fish on the far shelf on pinkie over groundbait. Peter caught his fish by switching between, bread punch, pinkie and chopped worm. Peter included a large perch in his catch.
Whilst some of the weights were low, everyone caught which meant points for their league standing. The LAC Winter league is based on section points. See image below for the results
The next Winter League Match is Sunday 18th February on the GUC at Town South. However an alternative venue is being considered and will be advised shortly. Meet at the venue for the draw at 8.30am. £1.00 peg fee and £5.00 optional pools, fish 10am till 3pm.

Match Report 7th February 2024 Danni’s How End
The Wednesday Group had intended to fish the River at Eaton Ford this week, but we sought an alternative venue after consulting Stuart the bailiff about venue ground conditions and the forecast wind and rain on Tuesday night. We met at a very soggy How End on Wednesday morning, with a chill in the air . The day was almost windless but cold starting at around 4C and appearing to get colder as the day wore on.
We conducted our peg draw and made our way through the mud to our pegs. Danni’s was holding colour, but the water temperature had dropped following the overnight rain and the lake was almost flat calm with no ripple when we started to fish. It turned out to be a day where one side of the lake seemed to fish much better than the other, where anglers sometimes struggled for bites.
Our in-form Andy Frankum again bagged top slot, he started by feeding Caster to the Island and an edge line over groundbait, Andy fished a waggler rod with red maggot on the hook. He caught a good net of silver fish and carp, ending with 50lb 8oz. Included in Andy’s haul was a very nice Perch weighed individually at 2lb 9oz, a really chunky fish.
Richard Gibbs bagged second spot with 47lb 2oz by fishing two lines, a pole line 2 plus 1 inside close in, and a feeder to island. He fed groundbait, loose fed maggots and a few venue pellets, with maggots on the hook. He caught most carp on the feeder, and silvers on the inside line along with one carp, skimmers and some baby Barbel. Richard had long periods without a bite so kept alternating between lines looking for fish.
Back fishing with us full time now is Colin Holmes after his 18 month working holiday in Liverpool. Colin, a very consistent performer came 3rd this week with 30lb 11oz. Colin started using a bomb around the corner of the island and after 2 1/4 hours hadn’t had a bite.
He swapped to his pole at 2 + 2 and used a banded pellet hook bait, which started to work, but by that time didn’t have the time to catch up with the leaders. Colin said afterwards he had learned a lot and his approach to commercials has changed, the people that were catching were using smaller hooks and thinner lines than he was, his comment was wait till next time!
Thanks to all those who helped with general admin and the weigh in this week, and to Pip, Phil and Tanya for making us so welcome at short notice.
