CRT ‘Let’s Fish’ Regional Celebration – Town South, Leighton Buzzard
Sunday 10th May
Luton were proud to host this year’s CRT Let’s Fish Regional Celebration on the Grand Union Canal at Town South, welcoming young anglers from across the region — with some travelling from as far as Somerset and Telford.
The day was overcast and disappointingly cold, with a sharp north‑easterly wind and an air temperature of just 13°C, a full 10°C down on yesterday. With the chilly wind blowing along the cut, conditions were always going to be challenging, but every cadet and junior caught at least one fish. Even the local heron decided it was too cold and settled down for a sleep.
The Cadets fished for 3 hours, while the Juniors fished for 3½ hours. After the weigh‑in, everyone gathered in the CRT compound for the presentation of cups and prizes, kindly presented by John Ellis (CRT) and visiting coach Julia Ryan (Ware), who joined us to help the local team for the day.

A huge thank‑you to John Ellis, the visiting coaches, and the dedicated Luton team who helped organise and run the event. A cold day, but a warm and memorable celebration of young anglers learning their craft.
A late change of venue saw us head to Black Horse Lake at Great Linford, a water few of us knew well. It’s a very large lake with a good head of fish, and we were allocated pegs along the river side. The water temperature was a steady 14°C.
A strong turnout of 21 anglers gathered in the car park on a chilly, overcast morning with barely a breath of wind. Conditions changed through the day — the wind strengthened, then eased again as we packed away. After the draw, most anglers set up with feeder tactics to start.
Section Highlights
1st — Jim Tookey, 17lb 7oz
Jim began by putting in 10 bait‑up feeders of micros, groundbait and chopped worm. After two quiet hours the tip finally went round, producing a 5lb bream. Topping up brought two more after 30 minutes, then another an hour later, giving him a well‑earned winning weight.
2nd — Colin Holmes, 13lb 12oz
Colin fished a feeder clipped up at 50yds and 60yds, baiting both lines. After a biteless spell on the near line he switched to the 60yd cage feeder with worm, immediately taking two rudd and a bream. Alternating between worm and corn kept the bream coming, adding three more.
3rd — Danny Worth, 10lb 10oz
Danny also fished a feeder at 60yds, using worm and caster on the hook to tempt three bream for a solid third place.
4th — Chris Howard, 8lb 15oz
Chris freely admits he’s “no expert at this feeder lark”, but he continues to learn well. Most of his fish came at 40 metres, taking his first bream on worm before switching to corn and adding rudd. Later he moved to 30 metres and added a second bream on worm.
5th — Sean Leatherland, 7lb 8oz
After an hour without a feeder bite, Sean switched to a float presentation at around four rod lengths. This produced over 60 fish — roach, rudd and a small carp — though he also lost a better fish in the bankside reeds.
Reflections
Although the fishing was patchy in places, everyone who made the trip enjoyed the day. The general feeling was that this is a venue we’d like to return to.
Many thanks to everyone who helped with the admin and weighing — another great team effort.
