Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - 12th July 2026

Here is the weekly round up of news, information and catch reports from Luton Angling Club for the week ending 12th July 2026.

TEMPORARY LAKE CLOSURE NOTICE — NORTH HOUSE LAKE North House Lake remains closed until further notice. The recent spell of high temperatures has caused water levels to warm rapidly and the decision has been made to close the lake in order to safeguard fish.

Beckerings remains open at present, though it is being monitored closely. Further updates will be shared as soon as they are available and we will re-open North House as soon as we are able to.

As a club we never like closing our waters, but protecting our fish is essential so that we can all continue enjoying catching the fish in the future. Keep an eye on social media for up to date information.

Beckerings
Rob Miller sent in a great update from his recent visits to Beckerings. Finding fish right across the range, with several doubles from 12lb upward, before young Teddy stepped up with a stunning 28lb Mirror — a real beauty and a brilliant achievement for him. To finish things off, a surprise little Perch made an appearance, adding a splash of colour to an already memorable run of sessions. Lovely angling from both of them.

Wyboston Bailiff Andy Smith had a fantastic 48-hour session. He managed to land four beautiful fish (despite losing three along the way). The highlight of the session was a stunning 26lb 4oz specimen, backed up by solid catches weighing in at 25lb, 20lb, and 19lb. Every single fish fell to Letchworth Bait Service boilies and pellets.

Match Report
Wednesday 8th July – River Ouse, Eaton Ford
In 1931 Noel Coward sang “Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun”, a humorous critique of the British colonial habit of ignoring sensible heat precautions. Well, to that list can now be added the 12 members of the Luton Wednesday Group, who gathered at Eaton Ford in the early cool of the day but later endured temperatures of 32 degrees. Bailiff and venue steward Stewart Thornton joined us for a chat and natter about the abundance of wildlife found at Eaton Ford during the match. Lots of rabbits were seen early on, plus 2 muntjac deer and Stewart reminded us that there has been no fewer than 22 different species of butterfly found here, an amazing statistic! So thank you Stewart for coming to meet us and for the great work you do in maintaining the area.
The river held little colour or flow yet still looked very tempting, with much fish activity as small dace, chub and the inevitable bleak were seen topping and taking insects off the surface. As usual, a variety of methods and styles were employed, but those who adopted a float approach dominated the top placings.
Richard Gibbs fished two lines: a whip at 5m to take bleak, small dace and chub, and then 9m on the elasticated whip in 12ft of water with a 4g bolo‑style float. Richard caught net roach and chub for two and a half hours and had 90 fish until Mr Pike took a fancy to a small roach on the retrieve, which then proceeded to take the whole rig. As a result, Richard could only find a further 15 fish in the last few hours. Many others also experienced heightened pike activity, notably Dave Ridley. The pike in his swim just would not go away and resulted in him eventually banking a 6lb‑er on an 18 hook.
Keith Ward fished close in on the pole using chopped worm for around two hours and caught steadily—small perch and a couple of netters. It then dried up, so he went to his 10m line where he’d been feeding hemp and casters and fished tares, hemp and caster on the hook. Apart from one dace on the hemp, it was the caster that helped him catch a few more dace and roach. He then put some chopped worm on that line and had another three to four perch. In the last 30 minutes he fished maggot on the hook and had another 20 small roach and dace.

We had a little boat movement during the day along with some paddle boarders, but all were well behaved, kept away from anglers, and had little effect on the fishing. The same cannot be said of the many pike plus the extreme heat, which certainly did have an effect on the angling, but despite that most enjoyed the day.
Many thanks go to Barry and Ray for scouting out the venue and to Colin Holmes for single‑handedly performing the weigh‑in. There were no photographs this week as, in view of the extreme heat, it was decided to return the fish as soon as possible after the weigh‑in.

Pick and Choose Match Result
Dennis Hunt and Samantha Rose opted to fish their match at Grove Church on the 8th July and because of the very hot weather they fished 9-30am to 1-30pm.
Both fished Rod and Line waggler tactics and caught fish from the off and they both enjoyed the morning on the canal.
Winner was Dennis Hunt with 3lb 14oz and Samantha weighed in 1lb 15oz.
