Match Report for Wednesday 23rd September 2026
Alders Farm Fishery, Great Brickhill.
An ecologist, Carl Safina, said, “Fishing is an affirmation of life’s richness and our profound interconnectedness to the natural world” Thus, thirteen bodies set out to fish Pines Lake at Alders farm Fishery and the results illustrate the richness of life for all and endorsed the interconnection with the natural world by the variety of species encountered.
Our very own Meteorological Guru / Environmental Consultant, Tony Hickmott reported as follows: -
“The weather was kind to us today, starting with blue skies and virtually no wind, but by late morning the sky above us had darkened, and the threat of rain seemed imminent. Luckily the rain never materialised. However, a wind did get up, but by the time of the weigh in it was back to blue skies again. The spring fed Pines Lake is beautifully landscaped, with strong stable, though somewhat narrow wooden platforms protruding over the water"
His report underlines the absence of Dennis Hunt who was still out of range for a rain dance!
Pines Lake is renowned as well stocked mixed Fishery and as the weights below show, it did not disappoint. The water looked very inviting with good colour, and the conditions described gave hope for a good day of fishing.
Such hope turned out to be well founded as approaching 600lbs of fish were weighed in which is a great result for a 5-hour session.
We are indebted as usual to the fantastic Ray Burton, for organising the administration of the match and dealing with the finances. Additionally, the weigh in at the end of the match proved to be an arduous task with some anglers weighing 3 or 4 keepnets of fish. Grateful Thanks are due to Colin Holmes and Tony Hickmott and others for conducting the weight-lifting work.
It can never be underestimated how the Wednesday match group of the club are so caring towards their fellow man, always pitching in to make matters as enjoyable as possible.
The Lake lived up to its reputation with some fantastic weights produced with Carp, Perch, and Bream being the predominant captures.
Stephen Holiday drew peg 1 to and made that advantage count to win the match with a final weight of 93lbs 5 oz. He fished a short line throughout the match. His initial approach was to fish with banded pellet which produced 4 Carp, but the loss of several fish prompted him to change to feeding maggots and micro pellets which proved to be more productive. He changed to maggot hook bait but only caught perch. So his final change was to use expanders on the hook which the Carp took to with a vengeance and provided him with a hectic second half of the match with a fish at every put in.
In second place was Andy Frankum on the other end peg (no16). with a magnificent weight of 85lbs 12 oz consisting of 43lbs of Silver Fish with the balance made up by Carp. Andy fished in the margin feeding caster, micro pellet and small balls of Groundbait using worm on the hook. Perch kept him busy for the first 2 and a half hours. He changed to caster on the hook still catching perch but with Carp and bream giving some variety. Great effort Andy.
In third place with 69lbs 1 oz was Colin Kidd, who fished a pole set up in the margins on peg 3, fishing over groundbait and corn. Quality Carp were his target, and this proved to be a successful method and would have been even better had fortune favoured him a little more with fewer lost fish. Colin’s comment of “caught some nice fish on a good day out, in good company “sums up the ethos of the Match Group perfectly.
Simon Foulkes on Peg 7 took 4th place with a bag of 61lbs 8oz. He decided to fish short for most of the match alternating between maggot and pellet hook bait, catching 20lb of perch and 40lb of carp.
The overall result of the Match was as follows: -
1st Steven Holiday 93lbs 5 oz
2nd Andy Frankum 85lbs 12oz
3rd Colin Kidd 69lbs 1oz
4th Simon Foulkes 61lbs 8 oz
5th Colin Holmes 57lbs 4oz
6th Colin McBeth 52lbs exactly
7th Sean Leatherland 42lbs 7 oz
8th Les Burton 38lbs 10 oz
9th Paul Carr 33lbs 6oz
10th Ray Burton 24lbs 15 oz
