Lee Waring's first three casts on the Grand Union Canal resulted in these three. After that nothing worth showing was caught. All his fish were caught using ledgered worm - one of the Bream is quite distinctive as it has a large chunk missing from the top dorsal area which looks an old wound that has healed over well.
Beckerings Reservoir
Oscar Harris had a great day at Beckerings catching a new PB - a Mirror Carp weighing 17lb.
Phil Anderson had a Red letter session this week. He fished Friday night into Saturday morning and had 15 runs and banking 13 in total. 4 were in the 20s and a he had a new PB at 32.8
All caught over a heavily baited spot and constant spodding throughout the night ensured the bites kept coming.

Match Report for Wednesday 30th September 2026 River Ouse, Lavendon
“Cometh the Hour , Cometh the man “is a paraphrased saying taken from Sir Walter Scott’s, novel “Guy Mannering”. However, this can be paraphrased further to “Cometh the Hour Cometh the Men”.
The hour was the match stated above and the men were our very own Jack of All Things, Tony Hickmott, for his organisation of finance, draw and weigh sheets plus a report on matters and the Ubiquitous Colin Holmes who had arrived at Lavendon before 8 am to peg the venue for us.
Both helped to conduct the weigh in and carried out other duties to ensure a good day was had by all. Thank you, Tony and Colin, for your substantial efforts on behalf of all 9 anglers who turned out despite a dodgy weather forecast.
Colin set Pegs 1- 4 in the first field with pegs 5-9 in the second field to give maximum distance between pegs as dictated by the reed banks present.
In Dennis Hunt’s absence, Tony has stood up to the plate once again and provided all the data required to give a thorough and graphic report of the above competition. Firstly, in his role as Weather and conditions Reporter, Tony described the day as follows: - “Today the water temperature in The Great River Ouse at Lavendon was 17 degrees C.
As we assembled, much of the talk involved speculation on the pending rain showers, which luckily amounted to just a few spots as we were setting up, and at the conclusion of matters as we left the car park. Dennis Hunt must be losing his powers!!
Ahead of the match the weather was overcast and calm, but just minutes before the start a breeze arose, which encouraged the autumn leaf fall onto the water from the trees in a small wood located on the opposite bank. These trees initially protected those present from the breeze during the early part of the match. However, the wind changed direction as the match progressed and a combination of negligible flow in the river following the prolonged lack of rain fall, allowed leaves to drift slowly down river passing through most swims. This persisted until a gap in the trees blew them across the water, and into the bank on the last swim. as the day progressed the wind changed direction again which meant that the bothersome leaves were no longer appearing on the water.
From the off, most caught small Roach or Perch, but minutes into the match the sun appeared high in the sky above us, reflecting on the ripples in the water from the breeze. Thus, sighting floats became difficult and many missed bites contributed to a low catch rate as the weights below demonstrate. Regularly ringing the changes in methods adopted became the order of the day, as attempts were made to locate better quality fish, by changing between pole, rod and line or feeder.”
The match results appear to reflect a battle of the ounces in the lower ranks, but Simon Foulkes on peg 8 managed to buck the trend fishing one line from the off at 11m, presenting over ground bait laced with hemp caster and red maggot to take small skimmers roach and perch. The lack of flow enabled him to fish directly over the feed. Simon had experienced a grounded barge on the canal at the Division 2 National Competition of the previous Saturday which washed away all his feed. So, with not a canal barge in sight at Lavendon, he managed to bank 5lbs 6 oz of fish for first place in the match. Well done, Simon. One down side was that Simon did turn up in shorts stating how warm it was. Colin Holmes reported that he was hoping that the weather would soon turn colder to avoid having to look at Simon’s legs which are not very comely!
In second place on Peg 3 was the omnipresent Colin Holmes with 2lbs 12oz, a great effort on a difficult day. He drew peg 3, only arriving there after nearly losing the front wheel of his barrow in some ruts which he described as being big as the Grand Canyon. (Colin never has been one to underplay matters!!) He started the match with sweetcorn and a cage feeder down the middle of his swim with 3 cricket ball size portions of ground bait at 6 & 11 metres. This approach yielded nothing. Coming closer in on a maggot bait only produced 2 perch. Colin found that going shallower at that distance only produced Bleak, so reverting to full depth he did manage to find a chub. Reverting again to a feeder to the far side produced a perch and another chub. Generally, Colin switched baits ranging from 3 dead red maggots to 2 live red maggots which produced fish intermittently throughout the match. Persistence proving to have its just reward.
Graham Stringer with 2lbs 5 oz, managed 3rd place from peg 2. He baited up with 6 large feeders of ground bait and chopped worm just past the middle of the river. He potted groundbait with maggots and pinkies, using a top kit plus three sections of his pole, fishing that line for the first half an hour. This produced 2 roach and a couple of perch. He then sent out a feeder with worm on the hook which tempted one large skimmer Bream of approximately 1lb from the first cast. The encouragement from this was short lived as no further fish materialised. Undaunted, he continued to ring the changes swapping between the two lines for the remainder of the match but could only pick up the odd fish on the pole. Great endeavour Graham – well done.
Despite being unplaced Dave Ridley again demonstrated his skills at bagging up on Bleak, which he located at a depth of about two feet, catching approximately seventy-five fish for a weight of 1lb 2 oz (4 fish per ounce). Hard work for little reward, but worthy of praise for effort.
At the weigh in several nets held one or two small Chub of around eight ounces, having fallen to maggots, which was encouraging to see although their number was disappointing.
However, the Army Air Corps did seem to have an interest in our activity on the bank as 2 Apache Helicopters flew over the river at very low level. Rumour has it that it was in response to Pete Smiths erratic casting of a large feeder which had been reported as low flying drones!!
Thanks are due to Colin Holmes and Tony Hickmott again for conducting the weigh in and the scribing of the results. It is getting increasingly difficult to find suitable words of appreciation for the members of the Wednesday Match Group of the club. Despite the low turnout this week everyone enjoyed a good day due to the unstinting efforts of their colleagues.
Another difficulty encountered on the day, as well as the quality of the fishing, was crossing the terrain of the field at Lavendon. The ground was heavily rutted in places with many open cracks caused by the recent drought. These elements made getting a barrow loaded with tackle and bait to a chosen swim a real challenge. Matters were exacerbated by Sheep excrement being liberally spread over the whole area which stuck to wheels and transferred to vehicles when they were packed away at the end of the match. These are matters beyond anyone’s control, but any angler planning to fish Lavendon should be aware of these current pitfalls,
The overall result of the Match was as follows: -
1st Simon Foulkes 5lbs 6oz
2nd Colin Holmes 2lbs 12oz
3rd Graham Stringer 2lbs 5oz
4th Dave Ridley 1lb 2oz
5th Pete Smith 13oz
Joint 6th Tony Hickmott & Andy Frankum 11 oz
8th Les Burton 10 oz
9th Malcolm Ogden 8oz
Our next match is on Wednesday 7th October 2026 which is to be held at The Globe pound of the Grand Union Canal at Leighton Buzzard.
Draw at the venue at 8.30am, with £5.00 optional pools. Fish 10.00am – 3.00 pm.
