2026 John Morris Memorial Match
Biddenham was looking at its autumnal best as nine anglers met in the car park just before 8:00am on Sunday to fish the annual John Morris Memorial Match. This event is held each year in memory of former club secretary John Morris and is always fished on the first Sunday in October at the venue he loved so much.
After paying our charity peg fee (£10) and pools, we completed the peg draw and made our way to our swims to set up, ready for the 10:00am start.
The day felt cooler than recent mornings with some dew, but the rising sun soon dried the ground, giving welcome warmth and revealing a wonderful day with the venue respondent in the green, reds and golds of autumn. The resident Kingfishers were working the river displaying iridescent flashes of red and blue as they sped by with the Parakeets chattering in the trees. With little wind, the river had a slight colour and a gentle flow.
While not exactly setting the world on fire the river fished steadily and extremely evenly along the length with all participants catching fish, most managing to put weights around 3lb on the scales.
First place was taken by Danny Worth, who I fished 2 lines using his pole, his main line being at 11mtrs, where he was feeding hemp and caching roach on single red maggot. He switched to his alternate margin worm line several times during the day when the 11 Metre line died, picking off quite a few perch in this way. Danny finished with 7lb 2 ounces to win the trophy.
Second was Mark Sessions who fished a 3m and 8m line on the pole. Mark was using a size 18 hook with mixer maggots and casters, feeding groundbait. Mark said most of the perch he caught came on the short line, and the roach on the 8m line. He caught most of his fish on triple maggots or caster and lost a very good fish with an hour to go which smashed him. After this lost fish he only had 2 more bites. Mark finished with 4lb 5oz and that what if feeling!
Myles Tommey, also fishing a pole took third with 3lb 8oz.
Following the match, last year’s winner, Richard Gibbs, presented the trophy to Danny in the car park.
Everyone who took part thoroughly enjoyed the day, which raised £90.00 for John’s nominated charity Groundwork, which was made up to £100 with a £10.00 donation from the Wednesday groups peg fund.

Match Report 7th October Grand Union Canal ‘The Globe’
One of the remarkable things about our Luton Wednesday group is its ongoing success, I don’t think anyone looking back 8 years ago when we started would believe we would have 22 members on the bank to fish the Canal on a rainy October morning.
It’s also grown to be much more than just a fishing group, it provides friendship, mutual support and much more besides, with everyone united by wanting to help each other get out on the bank, all taking turns mucking in to do the things we need to run our outings successfully.
This week it was fantastic to see Keith Ward, supported by Dave Whillock and on a short walk peg back out with us just 3 weeks after having a knee replacement, he was determined to get back out on the bank with everyone as soon as he could and putting in a very creditable performance to come 5th in A section.
It was raining when we met at the Globe to do our draw, and the weather forecast wasn’t good, more heavy rain and getting much colder as the day wore on. However we were lucky, the really heavy rain never materialised, and the rain stopped around midday, but it did get noticeably colder.
The Canal was holding colour, and water temperature was measured at 15C. The pound was noticeably low when we set up, and CRT started running water in about 1pm to bring the levels back up. Being October, we didn’t experience a lot of boats but the heavily laden ‘Jules Fuels’ pair did cause some disturbance.
Due to the numbers fishing we split into 2 eleven peg sections one above (A) and one below (B) the Globe.
On Section A Colin Holmes took first place with 8lb 7oz. His plan was to fish the bottom of the track far on the far side but as the whistle went a barge was passing in front of him and because the canal was low it all went muddy. He then went further over on the edge of the far bank branches with 2 pinkies on the hook and had 3 bites straight away. He didn’t connect to anything, and his next 2 bites connected but they were small and fell off on the way back, so he gave up on that.
He then reverted to plan 1 down the track. When he opened his red maggot bait box, they were sweating, wet with fairy liquid looking bubbles and smelly so it was unbelievable that 2 of them on an 18 caught most of his fish! He did try worm but only caught a few small skimmers and a nice perch, but only having 8 worms he couldn’t feed any.
Bart Bonito fishing ¾ of the way across came second in A using worm to take Bream and Skimmer, finishing with 7lb 12oz, while Dave Whillock fished at 8m for most of the day using punched bread. He took skimmers and small roach, occasionally trying chopped worm far bank for Perch but only got a few small skimmers on this line ending with 6lb 10oz.
On B section Pete Mills drew a nice feature peg with a tree which pushed the boats to the near side. He fed caster and ground bait on the far side and a hemp line up the shelf. He started on bread punch on the 3m whip line and caught intermittently for an hour and then went over on caster, which produced a proper bream first put in. After this he alternated between near and far side swims for the rest of the match. picking up small skimmers and perch, and finally the hemp line worked and took four roach in the last 20mins. Pete weighed 6lb 11oz for 1st in B section.
Tim Watts was second in B, catching Perch, Skimmers, and Roach at 12mts using pinkie / maggot. He landed an 8oz Pike but also was also plagued by one of about 2lb taking hooked Perch. Tim said he had a good start but had next to nothing after double fuel barge went through, ending with 4lb 6oz.
Barry Roper and Andy Francome tied for third place in B, each weighing 2lb 12oz. Barry began by catching perch at 4 m, but the line went quiet after a pair of boats passed. From then on, his only bites came from small roach at 11 m.
A big thank you to everyone who helped yesterday, and of course to the management at the Globe for generously giving us permission to use their car park. We all go in and have a drink afterwards.
