Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Week Ending 29th May 2022

Here is all this weeks news, information and catch reports from Luton Angling Club.

With only a couple of days left of the 2021/22 season. Members are reminded that the gate locks will be changed at around 8pm on the 31st May. Any member that has not renewed their membership should vacate the venue by 8pm and those that have renewed should ensure they have their new key with them in order to exit the venue after 8pm.

Venues are likely to be really busy at the start of the new membership year with all our new members keen to get on the bank. Please park considerately to maximise the space in the car parking areas and help our bailiffs by making sure you have read all the venue rules before fishing.

Beckerings Reservoir
Ethan Griffiths did a couple of sessions this week and had some decent Roach and Ide. On his second trip he had 3 Catfish and a Carp.
Liam Murphy had a 26lb 10oz Common.
Biddenham River Ouse
With the start of the River season (16th June) fast approaching five members of the Wednesday group met at Biddenham on Friday for a work party with the Clubs long handled pole saws, bow saws, ropes, and loppers to lend a hand to the onsite Bailiff team.

The venue bailiffs do such a brilliant job in maintaining the venue making sure it will be in top shape for the new season. They have been busy recently rebuilding and enlarging the swims, and to help them in getting the venue ready for 16th June the volunteers from the Wednesday match group put in half a day carrying out a previously agreed scope of work removing some overhead branches.

They managed to clear a lot of the vegetation that was starting to obstruct casting in swims 6- 22 (to the first bridge), and remove the cut waste, leaving the swims clean and tidy.

They enjoyed the day in the sunshine at this fantastic venue and with the work and the convivial chat the time passed very quickly.

The venue looks great, the river had flow and good colour and they can’t wait for 16th June to fish it again.
Coaching Team - Recognition by the Angling Trust
Three members of the Luton Angling Club coaching team (Richard Gibbs, Dennis Hunt and Roger Baker) attended Westbrook Mere on Tuesday to be presented with and Angling Trust 'Certificate of Merit' for their assistance in providing Coaching to Hertfordshire Police Officers during a training day on fisheries and fisheries crime held earlier this year.

It was very nice to have our contribution to this highly successful event which was organised by Angling Trust and The Environment Agency recognised.

Unfortunately due to a prior engagement the fourth member of our team Mark Brooks could not attend, which was a great shame.
Match Report, Wednesday 25th May South Lagoon
We had a very delayed draw this week at South Lagoon as many of the anglers were stuck in the surrounding traffic chaos because of several road closures. 14 of us stuck with it and managed to get there in the end, on what was a cooler and overcast morning with a stiff breeze.
We again had all sorts of weather during the day, and just as the whistle went at 3-30pm the heavens again obliged with a heavy rain shower, ensuring we had another ‘Luton wet Wednesday’ and our weigh sheet disintegrated in the wet and gear was wet for the trip home!
The fishing was quite slow, perhaps due to the cooler temperatures, with bites hard to come by both on the pole and the feeder. Some anglers had vicious pull rounds on the tip which seemed unmissable, but resulted in nothing, while others had tiny movements resulting in Skimmer bream hooked at range.
The resident bleak were up in the water but most chose to ignore those and concentrate on the larger fish.
Several large fish were lost float fishing using both pole and waggler close in, some unseen, presumed to be Tench, while others like a near double figure Mirror carp were seen and then lost.
Roger Baker lost a very good fish on the pole which tore off and smashed him in short order.
While the weights were not high the match was close, Steve Osman taking 3lb 10oz for first and Barry Roper weighing 3lb 9oz 8drm for second with Terry Vickers 2lb 10oz for third
Many thanks to all who helped organising the draw and Roger baker for doing the weigh in this week.

Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Week Ending 22nd May 2022

Here is this all weeks news and catch reports from Luton  Angling Club. Its the time of year when the carp start spawning. We will not be closing any venues as its difficult to predict and the fish can start and stop spawning over a few weeks depending on the conditions.

Please be respectful, spawning fish are not interested in your bait and fishing for them can harm them and they are put in danger of being foul hooked, the quicker they get this over with the quicker things will be back to normal. We will keep you updated on spawning via the club facebook page.

Keep your catch reports coming in via facebook and our website. You can also what's app your reports and pictures to 07940 229071.

North House Lake
After the work party on Sunday Neville Hunt stayed on and fished and had a nice Tench of around 4lb on the feeder.
During the mini work party on Sunday the addition of smaller mesh to the older section of otter fence was completed. We also repaired some of the damage and breaches caused by the rabbits around the perimeter of the fence. The gate opener mechanism was also improved. Thanks to the volunteers that helped out.

Beckerings Reservoir
Craig Mahoney had a 15lb 7oz Common.
After hearing about the carp spawning at Beckerings Daryl Vardy left them to it and targeted the cats instead, He wasn't disappointed as at 12.30am line was melting off his reel. After a goliath battle one of the larger cats was in the net at 61lb. At around 05.30am the same rod tore off. The battle wasn't quite as brutal as the first one but it still took line like he had hooked a train and after a fight it was in the net at 52lb
Rod Gladston and Grandson Charlie caught Commons just as the sun was setting at the end of a glorious day.
Bailiff Rob Thomas carried out some general maintenance cutting the grass in the car park to make more space and also cleared the vegetation from the verge at the main gate to improve visibility when leaving the venue.
Match Report 18/05/22
Grand Union Canal - The Globe

20 anglers met in the sunshine on Wednesday morning at the Globe car park, joining us were 3 new anglers to the club John Barton, Graham Bulmar and Mick Copperwheat. Due to the number fishing  and the volume of boats moored south of the Globe we elected to have 2 sections, one above and one below the bridge. Boat traffic was minimal and not an umbrella in sight! With the temperature climbing, the fish were on the move and some good weights were recorded.

Top weights below the bridge: Colin Macbeth netting 19lb 13oz, mostly bream on worm and bread on the pole, Dudley Frankland was second 18lb 14oz taking a carp of 7lb on the tip on worm.

The section above the bridge Steve Lathwell 9lb of bream and skimmers on worm and caster, fishing the pole at 13mtrs, new man Graham Bulmar was second with 6lb 12oz  his fish taken on the method with corn on the hook.

Everyone enjoyed the day and a beer afterwards, next week’s match is South Lagoon, Wyboston which is a day ticket water so all welcome.

Match Report, Wednesday 11th May
Yasi’s How End
This Wednesday 15 anglers gathered ‘Away’ for a change at How End to fish a commercial fishery for our Wednesday match. The day was overcast and damp, with an air temperature of 13C and light rain as the anglers were setting up, which gathered in intensity as the morning wore on, it certainly was another wet Wednesday this week!
The water temperature at midday was 17C, no wonder the fish felt warm. The anglers caught a variety of species, Mirror & Common Carp, Ide, Crucian Carp, Tench, Barbel, Bream, Roach and Rudd all featuring in the nets. Ray Burton Caught his PB Carp
Fortunes were mixed with some anglers not being able to contact the Carp, with others losing hooked Carp during the session.
Dave Britton had a good day, putting 54lb 8oz of carp and 7lb 14oz of silvers on the scales for a combined weight of 62lb 6oz. Dave caught his fish mid water at 4 sections, he fed 2 Kilo of fishery 4mm pellet and half a tin of corn. using a banded size 16 Kamasan B911X. David used pellet and corn as his hook bait.
Colin Macbeth was second with 24lb 11oz of Carp and 17lb 13oz of silvers for a total 42lb 8oz. He started with 3 lines, tight to far bank, the bottom of far shelf and top 2 plus 1. He fed lightly with pellet on the far bank initially for one carp, then fed the bottom of far shelf with gab and micros. He tried this line after an hour or so and caught a few silvers. His main attack was short line feeding heavily with maggot and caster with occasional 4mm pellet. He fed 1 pint of caster and best part of 3 pints of maggot. He caught mainly Ide initially on maggot with the addition of a few tench and a crucian. Fished pellet on this line later which produced a few carp.
Colin Holmes took 3rd place with 16lb 1oz of Carp and 21lb 3oz of silvers for 37lb 4oz. He made up a paste from some Des Shipp expanders, fishing 3 pole sections out most of the day. He did try a Method feeder bouncing it off the mud near the island but only caught roach & skimmers, and he found nothing on near margin.
Despite the rain all who came enjoyed the day, thanks to How End for hosting us and thanks to all who helped in organising the draw and weigh in

BECKERINGS RESERVOIR
Lee Cooke can't get over his weekend session at Beckerings recently !! He was desperate get a 20 and he managed to grab a 23lb 9oz Mirror.
Then a common with white/pink tipped tail landed in the net!
Then if that wasn't enough on a single tigernut and white corn he had the Half Lin out at 36lb 3oz.
He's still in shock after a cracking weekend. He send his thanks to bailiff Neil for the advice and also Rob for taking the photos

Steve Emery fished a short evening session and fishing the margins landed this common which is a new PB for him at 30lb 7oz.
Robbie Sweet had a nice Beckerings common. It was caught on 13 inch slip d rig with worm and chopped wafter
Neil Cox fished Friday and Saturday night at Beckerings. The fish were a bit moody and the cold snap overnight didn’t help.
He had a common during the night on Friday. Then after helping out on the work party Saturday morning he tempted a nice 22lb 1oz mirror off the top and then finished off the session with another common.

The bailiff witnessed an un-named angler catch one of the catfish at 55lb on Friday 29th April.

Craig Mahoney had a common at 18lb 3oz and a Mirror of 17lb 14oz
Bailiff Rob sent in a few pictures from his 24hr session. He had 2 carp and lost 3 to hook pulls in weed. He also had 5 bream.
On the work party on 30th April our team of work party volunteers replaced the hand rail on the ramp. Modified the bridge to make it slightly wider. We also improved the concrete threshold on the new otter fence gate so its easier to get barrows through the gate, built a barrow parking area so you can park your barrow while opening the gate and also we made repairs to platforms 4 and 27 and installed a new notice board in the car park. Thanks to all the volunteers that helped out.

Coaching Update
The Luton coaches have been busy this weekend with a well-attended follow-on coaching session on the Canal at Slapton on Saturday afternoon. All who came practised their bankside setup and pole fishing skills and caught well on Squatt and pinkie. We had some new attendees straight from our last ‘Lets Fish’ session who really enjoyed the afternoon.
Monday we took five of our more advanced Juniors to the commercial fishery at How End for something completely different. Phil and Tania Stone were very welcoming, and all our young anglers had a brilliant time.
None had ever caught a Carp before, and they all had a few in the net as well as some very nice Chub at 3lb+ and Perch over 2lb by the end of the session. They were practising fishing a pole and a method feeder, using maggot, pellet, and corn as bait and all caught on both methods. All our young anglers learnt an awful lot today including the important lesson of managing the disappointment if a fish falls off!
Alfie (I can’t catch Carp) Hawkes weighed in 54lb, followed by James (I can’t do this Oakes) with 33lb and Sam (I’m enjoying this) Chamberlain with 28lb, all ending with over 20lb.
Very many thanks to the Luton Coaching team and Phil and Tania at How End, the Club are developing a group of very talented young anglers.
Match Report, Wednesday 4th May
Town South
On 4th May 18 anglers met by the White Bridge on Town South for the Wednesday match.
The Canal was a very funny murky colour, perhaps caused by rain the night before. The day was overcast and damp, with light rain as the anglers were setting up.
The match was pegged either side of the bridge, and back towards the town, perhaps the last time we will be able to fish this area for some time as the towpath is soon to be closed for repair for some weeks. There were several boats that passed during the morning, which caused some disturbance, but fewer in the afternoon. The end pegs paid off today with pegs 1 and 18 in first and second places.
It was a return to form for Dudley Frankland on peg 1 who finished in first place catching most of the fish on two lines, the bottom of the near shelf and the bottom of the far shelf. Dudley used a pole and alternated the lines using pinkie and dead reds fished over groundbait, laced with squatt and dead pinkies. He also took 2 bream up on far shelf tight to far bank on a cage feeder using chopped worm & caster. Dudley weighed in 19lb 7oz to take first place.

Second place went to Tom Webster on 18 he started with a short line in front and two lines at 13m. On all three lines he fed groundbait with pinkie and squatt. On the short line he fished 4mm punch over the groundbait and had about 7 small skimmers and about 5 roach. Then that line just dried up so he went on the 13m lines with dead red maggot on the hook and caught the odd bigger skimmer. He topped up these two lines with chopped up pinkie and red maggot in groundbait and just picked up the odd skimmer till the end of the match to weigh 13lb 8oz for second.
Richard Gibbs spent the first half hour on the feeder and had two good pull arounds but didn't connect. He went on the punch on the nearside and started catching roach and small skimmers. He then switched to pinkie and continued catching until boat a movement ruined the line. He spent the rest of the day at 11.5 metres catching roach, some net skimmers, and some perch, to weigh 4lb 12oz for 3rd.

Malcolm Ogden had another great day taking a specimen canal roach of 1lb 7oz on worm.
15 minutes before the match ended the sky turned black and the heavens opened again, and we ended packing wet gear away on another wet Luton Wednesday!
Many thanks to all who helped in organising the draw, especially Trevor Bunnage who got very wet doing the weigh in!
