Luton Angling Club Weekly News Report for the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire & St Neots Cambridgeshire Area - Coronation Bank Holiday 8th May 2023

Here is all of this week's news, information and catch reports from Luton Angling Club.

Following all our membership renewals that took place during April, Our 2023/24 memberships went on general sale on Tuesday 2nd of May. All the available memberships sold out within 24 hours.

As with many other local angling clubs, The demand for club membership is high. We limit the number of members in the club to ensure our waters are not overcrowded. We are sorry if you missed out on club membership this year and have introduced a waiting list for next year (2024/25) membership.

This can be found on the club website. You are still able to fish South Lagoon, The Grand Union Canal and the River Ouse at Wyboston (when rivers re-open for fishing on June 16th) as you can buy a day ticket on these venues from the bailiffs on the bank.

If you were lucky enough to secure a membership for the coming 2023/24 season, please remember that the membership is valid from 1st June 2023 and you will not be able to gain access or fish at our waters until then. Please take the time to fully read your membership book and familiarise yourself with venue information and club rules for each venue.

North House Lake - Wyboston
Patryk Maćkowiak did 48hrs on north house and had 3 runs. Unfortunately, he lost two of them, but got this one making a very enjoyable session. Scales went 20lb 7oz. It looks like stockie 13 from 2017 stocked at 5lb 11oz
Tom Williams had a stunning 24lb Mirror from North House Lake on Saturday afternoon.
Gary Hatchett had a few fish from North House Lake on Saturday. The best of the bunch was John's Common at 29.08 he also had a 23lb mirror and one of the stockies, a mirror of around 13lbs
South Lagoon - Wyboston
Alfie Brinson and his brother had just finished setting up their 3 rods for carp on South Lagoon when all of a sudden the left hand rod went screaming off. They were certain it was a carp due to the style of bite but after a 10 minute fight to bring the fish to the net, to their complete surprise it was a beautiful Zander which took a strawberry boilie and a pineapple wafter. They were both over the moon with the catch and will be returning to the lake to try again soon. South Lagoon is available on a Day and Night ticket for non-members.
Beckerings Reservoir
Amer Jawad has been after a double figure Bream from Beckerings and has got really close a number of times but now the wait is over. He also had a surprise catch and caught his first Beckerings Tench, It's great to see a Tench of this small size as it proves they are reproducing and some of the fry are surviving.

Returning to the lake again later in the week he had another lovely few hours. He chose to try and fish the pole with his recovering broken finger. (He was glad he had his pole support bar). The session got off to a nice steady start, catching big roach, then a 7lb bream made an appearance, followed by this cracking roach that weighed 2lb 10oz!! It’s his biggest pole caught roach to date and his 4th biggest roach ever. His ground bait choice was the Dynamite Silver fish X.

Neil Cox proved that choosing your location is the key, he had a few hours to kill at Beckerings and just 5 minutes in the right spot produced this mid double common. It was caught on the ever faithful madbaits pineapple pop ups. There was no need to take the fish out of the water, and it was released straight from the net.
Fishing in the pouring rain, Peter Wells had 6 carp ranging from 10lb to 21lb. He also had 2 big bream during his 48 hour session.

Liam Murphy had a 16lb Common from Beckerings this weekend. He also had 15 Bream, which were all big slabs.

Brett Collins caught 8 fish over the weekend. Six of the fish are pictured below. The biggest going to 27lb

Harry Hart had 4 Carp from Beckerings 19.8lb, 26.3lb,15lb, and 21.8lb.

CRT ‘Lets Fish’ GUC Slapton 7th May.
Our Club coaches held another very successful public ‘Lets Fish’ event at Slapton this week with all but one of the available slots for the taster session filled.
The weather was kind after the rain of the day before, with little wind and the sun showing its face.
There was a good mixture of younger boys and girls again with their Mum's and Dad's and Grandparents all having a go.
The fishing was slightly slower than last week but only one young angler failed to catch, although they had several missed bites. All enjoyed themselves and caught good fish, Ella (7) who was fishing for the first time caught a rather nice Skimmer, Maison with his nice roach and Sam with his perch (he caught bigger fish but liked the Perch!).
All pictures are published with permission of the parents.
It was good to see some new 7 – 10 year olds who could potentially compete in the Cadet category as we are currently short in this age group.
Our young anglers keep getting older and becoming juniors!
By the end of our sessions many of our first-time anglers were happily hooking Pinkies, spotting bites, playing, landing and unhooking fish, and keen to get their own tackle and join the club as and learn more, perhaps going on to compete at the CRT Celebration in Shropshire later this year, and we have several promising leads to follow up.
Thanks to all the qualified Club coaches and the volunteers who do other essential jobs like running the reception desk and supervising parking needed to make these sessions a success.
Look out for more public Lets Fish sessions advertised on the CRT Angling Facebook page and booked via the Eventbrite booking systems.
Match Report 3rd May 2023 Town South GUC
Fourteen anglers met by the White Bridge on Town South this week on a very pleasant spring morning, with sun on our backs and a fine day in prospect. It was great to welcome Paul Carr the father of two of our promising Junior anglers who came to fish with us for the first time.
The canal was holding decent colour and there was a slight breeze in some pegs. We had a medium level of boat traffic through the day all except one boat causing no disruption. The sun was bright, the day starting with a clear sky, which clouded over as the day progressed, and a strong breeze sprang up in the last hour.
Midday water temperature was 13C, the fish still feeling cold. Most anglers had a good first 90 Mins, the fishing then tailing off, picking up again around 1pm for an hour and then becoming more challenging again.
This week the end pegs dominated, our winner Steve Lathwell coming from peg 16, a draw initially he didn’t fancy. Steve using his pole started on punch at 5 meters taking 5-6 skimmers and roach, then moved to 12-meter line using pinkie over groundbait to again take skimmers and roach and a couple of decent bream on red worms. He then kept swapping between the two lines to keep fish coming. Steve said he had a nice day, finishing with 18lb 12oz.
The fast-improving Andy Norgate had a great day fishing a waggler on peg 1 using worm to finish second with 11lb 13oz.
Barry Roper fishing a pole had a good first hour on the punch, which included a big bream. The then switched to 12m and caught roach and skimmers on red maggots, finishing third with 7lb 9oz. Barry lost a big fish he thought was probably a Carp midway through the match.
Included in Chris Howard’s catch this week was 13oz Roach, and Richard Darbon had a 2lb 10oz Perch (both fish individually weighed)

This week we will fish the commercial Twin Lakes at Biddenham, so booking is essential we will meet at the fishery for 8-30 draw Fishery peg fee applies plus £1 Wednesday peg fee and £5-00 optional pools.
