Here is all of the news, information and catch reports from Luton Angling Club for the week ending 10th September 2023.
It has now been confirmed that a local fishery (NOT A LUTON ANGLING CLUB WATER) has had the KHV virus detected and confirmed. It is vitally important that you completely dry your equipment before visiting any of our venues. Drying equipment in sunlight is by far the most effective way of preventing the spread of any waterborne viruses, whereas disinfectant dips do require a minimum contact time to be effective.
To protect our valuable fish stock and our waters please follow strict biosecurity and ensure all equipment is thoroughly dried between fishing trips.

Wednesday Match Report 6th September Grand Union Canal-Town South
We had 10 fish this week, as numbers of regulars are on holiday, some were unwell, and others cried off because of the heatwave. We met by the white bridge, conducted our draw and set off for our swims on a slightly misty morning, with little wind and temperatures up to 30C forecast so we knew umbrellas acing as sunshades and plenty of fluids to keep us hydrated would be required.
First place this week went to Steve Lathwell who started with pinkie over groundbait, at about 10 metres, taking a few skimmers, perch and roach. As the boat traffic built up over this line, he moved out to 11 metres again taking small skimmers over ground bait with small red worms tipped with a pinkie. When this dried up, he went to the 12-12.5 metre line where he had been feeding chopped worm and caster throughout the day. He again took small skimmers on red worm tipped with a caster, until a barge went over this line, taking out part of the reed bed and it killed the swim. Steve ended with 9lb 9oz.
Barry Roper took second, catching 3 decent skimmers in the first hour but then had a pike take a roach. This led to an hour and a half without a bite. For the rest of the match, he caught two more skimmers and a few bits. All fish came to pinkies between half and three quarters of the way across. He finished with 9lb 3oz.
Sean Leatherland took 3rd place, fishing at about 11.5 metres he took 4 Bream on single Caster along with a few bits and pieces to weigh in 8lb 12oz.
Many Thanks to Barry Roper and the Burton Brothers for doing the pegging and to Roger Baker, who hadn’t fished coming over in the afternoon to do the weigh in.

Luton AC - Coaching Round Up
The Club coaching teams have been very active over the school summer holidays and have delivered ten high quality ‘Lets Fish’ taster sessions for people wishing to try angling for the first time. These sessions are extremely popular and have taken place around Leighton Buzzard and Berkhamstead and have been a great success.
Thanks to all the volunteers and coaches that have been involved with this program and Lead coach Mark Brooks has asked me to send special thanks to Richard Gibbs and Neil Williams who saved the day recently when a couple of the other volunteers had to drop out at the last minute due to unforeseen circumstances.
There have been some great fish caught during all of these sessions, one young Mum on Thursday caught a 14oz Roach during a session in Berkhamsted which has been entered into the CRT August ‘Catch of the Month’ competition! We have been supported in delivering the events around Leighton Buzzard by the Whitbread fund, a local charitable organisation.
Several families returned to do more sessions with us after enjoying the original session so much, and Luton have signed up several young anglers wishing to learn more as Junior Kingfisher members into the Club coaching program, however its not just Junior members who we coach, we help lots of adults as well.
As well as the ‘Lets Fish’ taster events we have been busy running a successful CRT Regional Celebration heat at Three Locks in July and coaching our own Club juniors on Saturday afternoons. They have also been out practicing on their own, and recording some good catches, and the Club now have some extremely capable young anglers, some of whom have fished in adult Wednesday matches.
All this effort is certainly paying off, as Club junior membership has increased, and we have a Club record entry of 12 Cadet (6-10) and Junior (11-16) anglers into the CRT National Celebration of Young People and Fishing to be held on the Shropshire Union on 16 / 17th September. We have several competitors going for the second time, and we know our young anglers will do well in this event which all those who have attended before have really enjoyed, and we are hoping for some great results from our teams.
We will continue to run some Let's Fish taster sessions in the autumn and in October we start our winter once a month Saturday afternoon teach in sessions held at a Luton community centre.
Do you know an aspiring young angler, or do you know anyone who would like to train as a qualified volunteer coach and help us? If so, let please us know by getting in touch with the Club.
