Beckerings Work Party 7th October
The reservoir was closed on Saturday for a work party and lots of good and needed work was carried out today,The willows were trimmed alongside the platforms to provide better access for landing and returning fish while the water levels are low and we also replaced joists and re-decked platform 20 which was rotten. We also carried out repairs to a couple of the other platforms. Many thanks to all those that helped out.... Mark Sessions, Dennis Vivian, Alan Colclough,Dave Nicholson, Barry Stevenson, Graham Else Steve Emery, Ian Earey, Dave Murdoch, Fergal O'Kane and Neville Hunt.

Also thanks again to Jason Mash and Mark McLennan who recently donated their £25 photo prizes to the work party catering fund which we used some of today for bacon, sausage and black pudding rolls, and tea and coffee for the volunteers.

Our next planned work party is at North House Lake on the 11th November where again general maintenance work will be carried out. To avoid a wasted journey to any of our venues, please keep your eyes on the website noticeboard and events calendar and also our Facebook page as sometimes we may hold ad-hoc work parties that require venue closures at short notice if urgent work needs doing.

River Ouse at Lavendon Mill
Lavendon bailiff Roger had an enjoyable little session at Lavendon upstream on Monday. He had a nice mixed bag of mainly Roach and Skimmers with a few Perch and a surprise Rudd. All caught on groundbait cage feeder and double red maggots on the hook. Not the greatest photos as he was packing up during rain and just took a couple of quick shots of the fish in the keepnet.

He returned on Wednesday for another short 3 hour session and the Roach were feeding well again, and he caught using a groundbait feeder and double red maggot. He only had one skimmer this time and all the Roach were in immaculate condition.

South Lagoon Wyboston
Members and day ticket anglers will be pleased to hear that at long last the electricity pylon work at the South Lagoon is complete and the barriers restricting access to some of the pegs have been taken down. All pegs are now available again.

Bill Ridgway had a good day on the South Lagoon at Wyboston on Friday he said after trying several methods, 5 red maggots on a size 14 hook was the only thing that worked.

Venue bailiff Brian Turner did his first Pike session of the season on Saturday night he had 3 runs and landed one, it was only a Jack, so it wasn’t weighed. Before being returned it did seek its revenge and took a bit of skin off his finger as he unhooked it.

Match Report 4th October
Sam’s Lake, Twin Lakes, Biddenham, Beds
It was a dark, cloudy autumn morning with the temperature at only 10C, with a cold breeze blowing as the match group met at commercial fishery Twin Lakes on Wednesday. With 15 out it was great to see some old friends back among them this week.

The temperature did rise during the day, but the breeze stiffened considerably, and even though the sun appeared on a few occasions it was a very chilly affair with many reaching for windproof jackets for the first time in many months.

The lake was nicely coloured and looked in fine form, but the stiff breeze blowing down the venue made holding a pole at length difficult, and the significant ripple, especially when the sun came out made the fishing very challenging at times.

In form Adrian Smith was the winner this week with 75lb 7oz, he started fishing a pole in the middle with double maggot as bait, fishing over fishery pellets to net a couple of tench. He kept feeding the far bank line (at about 14 metres) with fishery pellets and after an hour he swapped lines to try it and started to catch the Carp on double maggot. As the fish kept coming he stayed on this line for the rest of the match. Adrian commented he found fishing a pole very challenging in the wind today.

Dudley Frankland who took second place with 60lb 5oz had the advantage of the wind on his back. He fed the lake margins from the start with groundbait and dead red maggot and waited a couple of hours before trying this line, and when he did, he it caught Carp and a few silvers steadily for the rest of match.

Third place man was Steve Lathwell with 46lb 9oz. Steve fished a feeder tight against the island and a pole in the margin to catch his bag.

Many thanks for all who assisted as stewards this week and special thanks to Tracy Leatherland for assisting at the weigh in and recording the weights for the group.

John Morris Memorial Match
1st October 2023 - River Ouse at Biddenham
On Sunday 1st October, 19 anglers met to fish in the 3rd annual John Morris memorial match held at Biddenham. John was our secretary for many years and is still missed by the club as he worked tirelessly on behalf of all of our members.

Luton Members were joined by those from our associated Club Abbey Lads and visitors from Kings Arms Sandy. The day was mild and overcast with intervals of sunshine, initially there was little wind, but an awkward breeze got up about midday and died away in the early afternoon.

The river was holding a good colour and had slight flow, and everyone was looking forward to a good day’s fishing, with much pre match chat and banter taking place in the car park.

The anglers used a variety of methods, often alternating and trying different lines and baits to locate the somewhat elusive fish, as the expected roach really didn’t show in any numbers, which left some struggling.

Adrian Smith (Luton) had a decent day putting together a weight of 7lb 11oz, the majority of which was made up with a nice Ouse Bream weighing a fraction under 5lb

Second placed was Dave Whillock (Abbey Lads) who weighed 5lb 14oz including a nice Perch of 2lb 6oz.

Third place was Keith Ward (Abbey Lads) with 4lb 4oz of mainly Roach.

A very close fourth was long term Luton member Denis Vivian with 4lb 2oz, which included two Perch, one of over 2lb.

Several anglers reported getting smashed by good fish during the day.

Our thanks must be recorded to Keith Ward for helping with the pegging, Richard Gibbs for running the booking on and pools, and Roger Baker, Trevor Bunnage and his partner Dawn who came to do the weigh in and record the weights.

All this help is very much appreciated as it helps to make an enjoyable day for everyone.

All who participated enjoyed the event, and it was a great result because £220 was raised for Groundwork a charity John supported.

Thanks to everyone who came, and we look forward to seeing you again next year.

Operation Traverse – Tackling Fish Theft and Illegal Fishing
Earlier this year the Luton club coaches assisted the Angling Trust / VBS delivery team to provide a training day to the Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire rural crime teams about all aspects of fishery crime. For our part in these activities the club was awarded an Angling Trust certificate of excellence.

The club has continued to work with Beds Police and their lead on Operation Traverse, and since the training took place the Beds Police team has successfully convicted 3 people for illegal fishing and 6 more have been summonsed to appear in court, and very recently three other males were arrested and had their vehicle and expensive tackle seized. They will soon be appearing before the courts as well, thankfully these incidents were not on our club waters.

Following the training, Beds police are fully on board with Operation Traverse and will act on information. The Club will continue to report any incidents that come to our notice for investigation and follow-up.

Remember, fisheries crime can often be linked to other illegal activities as we've found out with the use of false details and uninsured vehicles as an example.
Any Club member should be vigilant and initially report any suspicious activity themselves DIRECTLY to the Environment Agency on 0800 807060 (a number which should be in every angler’s phone) please give the details and obtain a reference number for the report.

It should also be reported to the police control room on the non-emergency number 101 quoting Operation Traverse and if possible, the EA reference number.
Any reported incidents should then be reported to the club with the appropriate reference numbers included.

The police will work with the environment agency to follow up these reports, and in this way we can all work to try and reduce fishery and rural crime in the Bedfordshire area and protect our property, our fish and the safety of anglers and other members of the public.

If you would like to send us a catch report from a Luton AC Water you can send reports and pictures via our facebook page and other social media accounts, the club website or via what’s app message to 07940 229071. Don’t forget every picture we receive is automatically entered in to our monthly photo prize which is judged by the committee and you could win £25.00. It’s not always the biggest fish that wins so well worth sending in any of your catch reports.

Tight Lines Until Next Week!
