Luton Angling Club - Weekly News, Information and Catch Report Roundup - Week Ending 18th January 2026

Very quiet on the bank this week, Cold, damp weather and steady rain have kept both anglers and fish subdued, so we haven't had any catch reports.

Nothing really unusual for mid‑January — once the weather settles, the sport and catch reports will no doubt pick up again.

If you do manage to get out on the bank please do send in any catch reports as anything this time of year helps us produce this weekly report, It doesn't have to be a specimen catch report - we enjoy receiving details of any of your outings even if you blank, as venue condition reports, pictures of nature and the scenery are all greatly appreciated.

We are already starting to get enquiries about 2026/27 membership which starts on 1st June 2026, Our membership renewals take place in April and following the renewals any remaining memberships will go on sale in May to new members. We do not have a waiting list and all membership for new members is first come first served - You can register your interest for membership via the home page at www.lutonanglingclub.co.uk and you will then be contacted when membership goes on sale.

Wednesday Match Group - January Update
Our Wednesday match group whilst not out on the bank during January are busy behind the scenes and are planning their 2026/27 activities. They sent us in this January update.

"After our end of year get together at the Globe before Christmas we have a break during January before returning to the banks again at the start of February.
However, that doesn’t mean we haven’t been busy getting things sorted out for the 2026 /27 Season. Which isn’t too far away.
We had a very successful and well attended lunchtime meeting at the Globe on Wednesday to discuss venues and set our program from June 2026 until end of May 2027 and we also discussed some new ideas for events and competitions, and already have the Sunday competition dates in the diary.
We already have a heat of the CRT Canal Pairs competition in May and are running several Junior competitions, as well and investigating putting a team into the Division 2 National in September, which is to be held around Northampton. We need 10 anglers and a Non Fishing Steward to enter, if anyone wanted to join the team we need to know ASAP.
We will continue to un our Wednesday League and run the popular Canal Pick and Choose head to Head competition which was revived last year and very well supported.
One of our members is looking to arranging some group tuition sessions with famous name anglers, and another group are investigating running a short evening Mini Series in the summer based on the Canal, all exciting developments.
It’s also intended to reintroduce the Charlie Olney Memorial Whip only match (Max Length 4 metres) to be held on the GUC, perhaps as an evening fixture. Charlie was a very long standing Luton Member who lived in Oak road by the football ground, and won his first Luton trophies before WWII (1934 I believe) and he then continued to fish Luton matches until he passed away at over 90 years of age, Charlie at one time achieved fame as the oldest regular match angler in the country, and loved his whip fishing.
Our Assistant Match Secretaries grandad used to fish with Charlie in times gone by, do you have any fishing memories of Charlie?

If you do, we would love for you to get in touch and share the stories"

A1 Road Closures - Affecting travel to Wyboston venues and Eaton Ford.
Probably the only other thing worth mentioning is to keep an eye on any upcoming closures of the A1 which may affect your travel to North House Lake, South Lagoon, The River at Wyboston and Eaton Ford.

As far as January goes there are some overnight Northbound closures planned for the last week of January. The Northbound carriageway will be closed between Tempsford and the Black Cat roundabout overnight (9pm to 5am) from Monday 26 to Friday 30 January 2026.

It's worth checking the National Highways website at the link below for the most up to date information about the works taking place on the A1 at Black Cat as these are ongoing until 2027.
